ISBN 9781107107021. 1 Republican and Monarchic Aristotelianism There was a time in which the general consensus was that Aristotle is a natural- born republican. In our own age, John G. A. Pocock’s remarkable study, The Machiavellian Moment, following in the footsteps of Hannah Arendt,1 argues that Aristotle adheres to a civic, participatory version of human political natu- ralism.
