ISLANDS AND SWAMPS: A COMPARISON OF THE JAPANESE AMERICAN INTERNMENT EXPERIENCE IN HAWAII AND ARKANSAS ISLANDS AND SWAMPS: A COMPARISON OF THE JAPANESE AMERICAN INTERNMENT EXPERIENCE IN HAWAII AND ARKANSAS A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History By Caleb Kenji Watanabe Arkansas Tech University Bachelor of Arts in History, 2009 December 2011 University of Arkansas ABSTRACT Comparing the Japanese American relocation centers of Arkansas and the camp systems of Hawaii shows that internment was not universally detrimental to those held within its confines. Internment in Hawaii was far more severe than it was in Arkansas. This claim is supported by both primary sources, derived mainly from oral interviews, and secondary sources made up of scholarly research that has been conducted on the topic since the events of Japanese American internment occurred. -

However, there is little or no academic research in English that addresses this new immigrant population, known as Shin-Issei. This paper investigates how Shin-Issei who live their lives in a complex space between the two nation-states of Japan and the U.S. negotiate their ethnic identity by looking at how these newcomers find a sense of belonging in Southern California in racial, social, and legal terms. Through an ethnographic approach of in-depth interviews and participant observation with six individuals, this case-study expands the available literature on transnationalism by exploring how Shin-Issei negotiations of identities rely on a transnational understandings of national ideologies of belonging which is a less direct form of transnationalism and is a more psychological, symbolic, and emotional reconciliation of self, encompassed between two worlds. -

I received my undergraduate degree in English from Indiana State University. I swore when I finished my Bachelors degree that I would never take another college course again. Little did I know I would eventually grow bored with full-time employment and nothing else. My life as a student started when I was four years old, but in 2001, I found myself in unfamiliar territory. Because of this, and the fact that the Indiana University would pay for a great deal of my education, I decided to go back to school. I have to thank the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Admissions Office for employing me for the last eight years and working around my school schedule so that I could complete my Master of Arts degree. -

The cinders transform her into royalty. — Michael Rogin, Blackface, White Noise (1996:183) During World War II, young Japanese American women performed in blackface behind barbed wire. The oppressive and insular conditions of incarceration and a political climate that was attacking the performers’ own racial status rendered these blackface performances somehow exceptional and even resistant. 2012 marked the 70th anniversary of the US government’s deci- sion to evacuate and intern nearly 120,000 Japanese Americans from the West Coast. The mass incarceration of Issei and Nisei in 1942 was justified by a US mindset that conflated every eth- nic Japanese face, regardless of citizenship status or national allegiance, with the “face of the TDR: The Drama Review 57:2 (T218) Summer 2013. ©2013 New York University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology 123 Downloaded from http://www.mitpressjournals.org/doi/pdf/10.1162/DRAM_a_00264 by guest on 01 October 2021 enemy.”1 While this racist reading of the Japanese (American) face has been widely condemned in the intervening 70 years, the precarious semiotics of Japanese ethnicity are remarkably pres- ent for contemporary observers attempting to apprehend the relationship between a Japanese (American) face and blackface. -

PUBLIC LAW 106-451—NOV. 7, 2000 114 STAT. 1947 Public Law 106-451 106th Congress An Act To provide for the preparation of a Grovemment report detailing injustices suffered by Italian Americans during World War II, and a formal acknowledgment of Nov. 7, 2000 such injustices by the President. [H.R. 2442] Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, Wartime Violation of SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE. Italian American Civil Liberties This Act may be cited as the "Wartime Violation of Italian Act. American Civil Liberi;ies Act". 50 use app. 1981 note. SEC. 2. FINDINGS. The Congress makes the following findings: (1) The freedom of more than 600,000 Italian-bom immigrants in the United States and their families was restricted during World War II by Government measures that branded them "enemy aliens" and included carrying identifica tion cards, travel restrictions, and seizure of personal property. (2) During World War II more than 10,000 Italian i^eri- cans living on the West Coast were forced to leave their homes and prohibited from entering coastal zones. More than 50,000 . were subjected to curfews. (3) During World War II thousands of Italian American immigrants were arrested, and hundreds were interned in mili tary camps. (4) Hundreds of thousands of Italian Americans performed exemplary service and thousands sacrificed their lives in defense of the United States. (5) At the time, Italians were the largest foreign-bom group in the United States, and today are the fifth largest immigrant group in the United States, numbering approximately 15 mil lion.
