Statements of NEC Candidates Nominated by Labour International Members 2020

1. Party Treasurer Candidates

Dave Bradney The party’s treasurer needs to combine vision with prudence. Vision so that the party can develop creatively; prudence so that disruptive “boom and bust” funding cycles are avoided.

To those qualities want to add openness, responsiveness and approachability. The party’s internal processes, including finance, are labyrinthine and alienating. That is inappropriate in a membership organisation.

When I rejoined Labour in 2015, I became Ceredigion CLP’s treasurer, and over three years doing this I was scandalised to discover that CLPs are not permitted to participate at regional/national level unless they pay an annual “affiliation” fee. There is no provision for this in the party’s rules, and the Nominators mechanism that does exist for funding regional-level activities seems to be in disuse. Ian Hollingworth Daniel Speight I had great difficulty obtaining ’s annual accounts, and was never permitted to have a discussion with the Treasurer. All this is inappropriate and unacceptable. I would not be doing things like this.

I am 74, a retired journalist with some knowledge of financial issues and processes. I have a science degree, so I am numerate as well as literate. I am not a member of any internal party grouping, except for SERA.”

07896119297 It continues to be an honour to be elected Labour Party Treasurer.

We have transformed the Party’s finances, and I thank and pay tribute to everyone – members, trade unions, CLPs, elected representatives, socialist societies.

I remain determined to keep Party finances on a sound and transparent footing, as we deal with Conservative attacks on our Party’s funding, supporting the pivotal role of local Parties. I am also a strong supporter of Labour’s affiliated unions and socialist societies. Labour always achieves most when all parts of our Party come together – this is also true of Party finances.

My top three priorities: • ensuring resources to campaign and win in 2021 elections and building to 2024 • protecting and strengthening our funding base Nominators • campaigning year-round, building Party membership, extending our reach. John Bennett Jerry Hogg My experience is as the longest-serving Labour NEC member; NEC and Party Chair 2002/3. As Assistant General Secretary of Unite, I have a proven track record against injustice and exploitation, for investment in jobs, communities and equality for all. Strong governance, financial management and organisation are essential.

Now more than ever we must be the Party standing up for our communities, the alternative to poverty, division, fear and hatred.

@DianaHolland_ 2. Disabled Members’ Representative Candidates

George Lindars-Hammond I am a passionate disability and Labour Party activist. Having cerebral palsy is challenging but has given me a deep understanding of injustices and drives me to ensure that everyone has an equal platform.

My first job was working to get disabled people employed in local businesses. I then became an activist and trustee for Disability Sheffield, helping it grow in difficult times.

As Council Cabinet member for Social care in Sheffield, it is my mission to transform the services Disabled people need to thrive.

It is scandalous how we have been cast aside by this Government – Labour must commit to advancing opportunities and equality for us.

If elected, I would champion Disabled members, ensuring representation at all levels in Labour and government. Nominators John Bennett It is time for a Disabled member on every shortlist. It is time that we ensure members can participate Jerry Hogg in Labour however we choose, and it is time we are helped with additional costs of party activity.

We have a brilliant opportunity to transform our Party for Disabled people with this position. I’m proud to have backing across our movement, from to David Blunkett to – I ask for your support today.

facebook.com/georgefornec Ellen Morrison I am standing as NEC representative of disabled members because I believe our Party can do so much more for disabled members, and that I have the commitment and experience to represent you on the NEC. I would bring the following experience:

• Organising trainings, events and campaigns as Chair of ’s and Eastern young members and Secretary of my local Unite Community branch • Representing disabled members as Disability Officer in my CLP, Lewisham East • Organising campaigns, events, protests and conferences with Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) • Active in the campaign to #StopAndScrapUniversalCredit

Nominators It would be my priority to listen to what disabled members want from their NEC rep. Campaigning Ian Hollingworth with Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) and representing disabled trade unionists in Unite Daniel Speight Community has given me the experience to advocate for our rights.

Getting basic access measures right, like remote participation, is the minimum. It’s time Labour empowers disabled members to take the decisions that affect us. From having our own structures to self organise within the party, to shaping the policies that affect us.

I’m proud to have the endorsement of DPAC and in standing for this role.

@ellenlmorrison Richard Rieser Having been a disabled person from 1949 I have learned that we need to embrace our identity as disabled people, regardless of the type of impairment – physical(mine), sensory, psycho-social or mental. Disablism is an oppression and it can only be tackled collectively, where we work, live, play and in our political party through ‘social model’ policies.

I fought as a teacher and trade unionist (NUT/NEU) I fought for disability equality justice for disabled people in many cases and campaigns.

I have been involved in these struggles as Chair of the Alliance for Inclusive Education(1990-2002), Nominators BCODP/UKDPC Rep. at the European Disability Forum (2004-2013), Representing UK Disability Philippa Dakin Movement in New York at negotiations on the UN Convention on Rights Persons with Disabilities, Nadia Woodhouse Coordinator of UK Disability History Month (2010 to date), as Director of Disability Equality in Education and World of Inclusion, advising the Labour Government on these issues.

For the last 3 years I have been CLP Disability Officer and set up a Disabled Members Forum in Islington North and Disabled People for a Labour Victory. As a Party we need to relate to the key issues in the lives of the 13 million disabled people living in the UK

@AnnBlackLabour Yasmine Dar I’m standing for re-election to the NEC so I can continue to be a strong voice for grassroots members. In the past 2.5 years I have:

• Pushed for implementation of the Democracy Review, including creation of equalities structures and NEC seats that will allow the voices of BAME, disabled, LGBT and women members to be genuinely heard. • Been a strong supporter of Jeremy Corbyn’s internationalist foreign policy for peace, justice and human rights throughout the world. • As elected Chair of the Disputes Committee been committed to a transparent, fair disciplinary process based on natural justice. • Supported more say for grassroots members, for example through open selections.

Nominators My experiences as a BAME woman, a social worker, co-founder of a Children’s Charity, anti- Ian Hollingworth racist activist and a Councillor have shaped my and fuelled my determination to fight George Massey for a transformative Labour government for the many not the few. We must defend and advance the progressive policies of 2017 and 2019, taking action to support campaigns such as Black Lives Matter and on the Green New Deal.

@Yasmine_Dar Katherine Foy I’m a 31 year old working class trans woman. The media pretends that I don’t exist, that I don’t matter, that my priorities are not those of every other human beings.

I want a Labour Party that fights to win, that isn’t ashamed of its values or its members.

I’ve worked in call centres and on shop floors. I first knocked doors for Labour in 2007. I’ve campaigned to win council seats. Winning means being strong in our organisation and in our structures. It means rooting out bigotry wherever it is found.

Ordinary members voices must be heard in the highest offices of this party. We cannot win with a disillusioned membership, or with hollowed out local branches.

We can care about people’s jobs, homes and health; while also caring about human dignity. These priorities are not opposed – these are inseparable. Nominators Mark Whiley We must not backslide in our commitment to minority rights. We cannot pick and choose which Andrew Ryder forms of bigotry we oppose. I want a Labour Party that is bold in standing up for black lives and trans rights, and firmly against antisemitism.

Silence is complicity – zero tolerance must mean zero tolerance.

@Katherine_M_Foy Theresa Griffin Trade Unionist, I have fought all my life for everyone to have a decent job, to defend the NHS, to protect our most vulnerable. MEP of the Year for fighting energy poverty and for disability equality; the way out of this crisis is quality public services and an innovative Labour Green Deal led locally.

It is by listening to the electorate, we can return our Labour Government to reverse Tory austerity, improve lives and unlock the potential of our young people. A unified Team Labour, at local, regional and national level; a Labour voice in a Socialist Europe internationally. A Just Transition to a decarbonised economy, quality jobs and public services, leaving no-one behind; only Nominators achievable by winning for Labour. John Bennett Jerry Hogg If elected I would: • listen to members to plan a Winning Campaign on Labour values for 2021 elections • strengthen policy development, working with members to frame a Labour response to Covid-19 impact, public services, local democracy, green economy, security, housing and fair taxation • strengthen the trade union and cooperative link to support the membership in achieving our Labour Government.

labourtribune.com Ann Henderson I am standing for re-election to the NEC, committed to representing the views of the grassroots membership and improving support for CLPs across the whole country.

I joined the NEC in September 2018, and was elected Chair of the NEC Equalities Committee in January 2019.

We face the most significant global public health and economic crisis of our lifetime, and must prioritise building on policies developed for our 2017 and 2019 manifestos to win anti-austerity, internationalist Labour governments.

As a Party and trade union activist since the early 1980s, I have extensive experience across the Nominators movement at every level, including the Scottish and National Policy Forums, and as a member of Ian Hollingworth Labour’s Scottish Executive Committee. Building a Party which understands devolution is George Massey important for us all. On the NEC and in Scotland I have been centrally involved in re-establishing a Labour women’s organisation, with delegate-based, policy-making Labour Women’s Conferences. The experience of the COVID19 pandemic has highlighted the need for women’s experiences and voices to be at the heart of our response.

I am supported by the Centre-Left Grassroots Alliance. Please also support Yasmine Dar, Laura Pidcock, Gemma Bolton, Mish Rahman, and Nadia Jama.

@chqamerlab I’m a proud young socialist and Labour activist who has campaigned tirelessly both locally and nationally.

We face unprecedented times and our members deserve a strong voice on the NEC to ensure our Labour movement remains committed to socialist and anti-racist values as we continue to democratise and diversify our party. I believe I am that candidate.

I will rebuild and invest in a strong network of active branches, grassroots activists, members and local communities to ensure we listen and learn from all parts of our movement. Members voices – especially of those from underrepresented groups – should shape our strategy, policy and campaigns as we fight for a radical Labour government.

I recognise the pain many members feel and I want to run for NEC to amplify and listen to their concerns. The Party has failed to listen to minorities, so as a CLP representative, I will lobby for change and ensure all forms of racism, sexual harassment and discrimination is stamped out of Nominators our Party through a robust complaints procedure. Mark Whiley Andrew Ryder I want to remind our members, voters and communities that the Labour Party can still be the Party for you. I will be your voice on the NEC.

@jermainjackman Gurinder Singh Josan The Labour Party MUST win the next General Election. I’m a Labour Party member of 32 years and was elected to Labour’s NEC in April and I want to continue the work we’ve started to create a united movement behind Keir Starmer and bring to an end the last few years of divisive factionalism.

I’m a Director of anti-racism campaign HOPE not Hate, Secretary of my Unite Branch, Vice Chair of Sikhs for Labour, school Governor, member of West Midlands Strategic Police & Crime Board and Central Council member of Socialist Health Association.

I believe in a broad-church, election winning Labour Party in which all traditions are respected and ALL our members have a role in building an organisation that is second to none, ending Nominators racism, antisemitism and discrimination, ensuring a robust, fair and independent complaints John Bennett system, fixing the governance deficit, putting members back in charge of policy making and Jerry Hogg candidate selections and rebuilding trust with voters who left us.

I bring with me my background as a long-standing and dedicated party activist, a passionate equalities campaigner and my independent minded commitment to a member-led democratic Labour party. I’m also supporting Akehurst, Baxter, Paul, Payne, Tatler and Black, Griffin, Sherriff.

Facebook: /GurinderSinghJosanforNEC/ Terry Paul I am standing to represent the grassroots of our party, our CLPs. I want to ensure they have the campaigning support that will allow us to bring Labour’s message to every voter in the country, so that we can defeat the Tories and install Keir Starmer as our Prime Minister.

I was born into a working-class family in East London. My mother was an NHS nurse and my stepfather worked at Fords of Dagenham. Their support ensured I was the first in my family to go to university. I joined the party in 1994; since then I have been a CLP Chair and worked for the party as a campaign organiser. Since 2010 I have been a councillor in Newham and have seen the transformative power that Labour can have in local government.

The Black Lives Matter movement has started a conversation in every part of our society, including Labour. We now need action to ensure our party fully represents the country we want to govern. It is vital that BAME voices are heard in every conversation, every meeting and every election within the party. I recommend also voting for Akehurst, Baxter, Payne, Singh Josan, Tatler, Black, Griffin, Sherriff. Nominators John Bennett Jarry Hogg 07957227372

@terrympaul Michael Payne I’m standing for Labour’s NEC because I want a united party, true to our radical tradition that leads the fight for a fairer Britain.I’ve campaigned for Labour all my life. Labour made me who I am today. It got me to university, enabled me to become a councillor and now national of Labour in local government, and it introduced me to my partner Kyle.

I’ve been out on the doorsteps in my home seat of Gedling in Nottinghamshire in election after election over two decades. As one of the most marginal areas in the country it’s been tough, particularly when we lost in 2019. But like thousands of Labour members, I was inspired by Keir’s campaign, to unite, fight for social justice and win back power.

As your representative on the NEC I will be your voice. As an activist, organiser, parliamentary Nominators candidate, and now Labour local government’s campaign lead I know what our members, John Bennett campaigners & representatives need to beat the Tories. Jerry Hogg I will work relentlessly for greater representation of women, BAME, disabled and LGBT+ members at all levels of politics.

I recommend also voting for Akehurst, Baxter, Paul, Singh Josan, Tatler and Black, Griffin, Sherriff.

@MichaelPayneUK Laura Pidcock The scale and intensity of the challenges facing working class people here in the UK and across the world needs to be treated with the seriousness and urgency it deserves. We are facing a prolonged workers’ rights crisis, a global environmental emergency, a global health pandemic and a huge political crisis. It is up to us to change the course of history. The current economic system offers no hope or security to working class people.

I am from a political tradition that wants bring about a different system, one which eradicates in- work poverty, supports a sustainable and thriving planet and an end to war and oppression. There are no individual solutions to our problems, only collective ones. I want to be your representative on the NEC to uphold socialist principles, to defend and push beyond the 2019 manifesto in order to achieve a Labour government, and to strongly defend democracy in our party. The membership is the Labour Party. Nominators Ian Hollingworth I am supported by the Centre-Left Grassroots Alliance. https://www.facebook.com/LauraPidcockNWD Alec Price As a child, I watched attack firefighters, like my dad, striking for fair pay, whilst Iraq burned for oil. Tony Benn introduced me to socialism. The banks crashing the economy taught my generation that capitalism had failed.

Corbyn showed an alternative to war, racism, austerity and environmental destruction was possible, inspiring millions. We’d have a socialist Labour government now if we weren’t held back by some in our own party and other sections of the ruling class.

As a frontline NHS worker, I know its working people, not political careerists, who have the real power to change society. Labour needs to stand for working class democratic control of the key sectors of the economy, so we can run society for human need, not billionaire greed.

We must show active support for workers campaigns, democratising union affiliations. Open selections of MPs are essential and candidates should pledge to take a workers wage, donating the surplus to solidarity causes. Nominators Ian Hollingworth All aspects of party life must be under membership & affiliate control, through democratic George Massey national conferences and local District Labour Parties where we collectively decide selections, polices and campaigning priorities.

We have a world to win; our chains to lose.

https://www.facebook.com/Alec4NEC/ Mish Rahman As one of the first graduates of Labour’s Bernie Grant Leadership programme to empower more BAME people to stand for elected positions, I decided to stand for election to the NEC to ensure:

• A strong voice for Party members on the NEC, and greater oversight over the governance of our Party. • Political education and development for members. • That the NEC reflects the diversity of our Party and stands in solidarity with Black Lives Matter. • Strengthened organisations representing equalities groups. • Support for policies to deliver the future we need, which are overwhelmingly popular with the public: a Green New Deal, public ownership, a just welfare system, rolling back privatisation of the NHS, repealing anti-trade union laws, advancing migrants’ rights, and international solidarity.

As a working class man of Bangladeshi heritage, whose father campaigned with the Anti-Nazi Nominators League in the 1980s against the National Front, I have always been a committed anti-racist Alan Aitkenhead activist. @misba70 Paula Sherriff I spent a lifetime working in the public sector; a decade in a Police support role where I was awarded a judges commendation for supporting child victims of sex abuse then the front line of our amazing NHS for 12 years.

Fighting for the vulnerable and giving a voice to the voiceless is in my DNA. As a lifelong trade unionist, former shop steward and equalities officer I wanted to give something back – I’ll never walk by an injustice.

I was elected as a Councillor in 2012 taking the seat off the Tories then as an MP, again taking the seat from the Tories. I loved being a campaigning MP, from taking on WH Smith and their exorbitant hospital pricing to my most noteworthy campaign win, when I became the first Nominators Parliamentarian in history to have a budget amendment accepted by the Government - the Mark Whiley abolition of the tampon tax. Andrew Ryder John Bennett I’m about actions not words. My campaign on period poverty became an international movement, Jerry Hogg I’ll never stop trying to break down barriers and stigma.

If elected I would: • Work to win 2021 local/national elections • Strengthen policy development working with members • Strengthen the trade union and cooperative link

www.labourtribune.com Roger Silverman As an NEC member, I would campaign vigorously to restore the supremacy of party conference, uphold the democratic right of open selection of candidates for office, end arbitrary suspensions, and put forward radical socialist policies along the lines of the 2019 election manifesto.

I was born into a Labour family and have been a lifelong party activist. My father was a left Labour MP for 33 years and an elected member of the NEC. I am a branch delegate to the GC of my local party and was its main delegate to the 2019 annual conference.

Labour’s defeat in the December general election was a crushing setback, but despite media distortions it was not “the worst result since 1931”. Labour actually won more votes in 2019 than in 2015, 2010 or even 2005 (when Labour won). We are still the biggest political party in Europe.

We are currently living through a “perfect storm”: a deadly pandemic, the prospect of a devastating slump, the threat of environmental catastrophe. The Johnson government is already widely discredited. We must seize the opportunity to harness the energies of our half a million Nominators members to build a Britain for the many not the few. Facebook: Roger Silverman Shama Tatler I believe my personal, professional, and political experience make me a strong candidate for the NEC, so can be part of the solution to help Keir Starmer and Labour into government.

The impact of austerity in both education and health since 2010 has shaped my life. My late husband’s cancer and Bipolar diagnosis along with my experiences as a teacher have driven my motivation to do all I can to get Labour elected at every level.

I was proud to be elected to Brent Council in 2014 and became a Cabinet member in 2016. This has enabled me to see how Labour in power can make a real and lasting difference in people’slives.

I joined the party because I want to be part of shaping and improving quality of the life and representation for every community, particularly minorities and those most disadvantaged. I want to improve participation, training and tolerance in our party and will support learning every Nominators possible lesson from our past to ensure that we can all go forward together; united in common John Bennett cause of securing the next Labour Government. https://www.facebook.com/tatler4nec/ Carol Taylor-Spedding As a teacher of 42 years experience, a union rep and a parent, I have seen the inequalities and failings of our education system. As a KONP activist I know how successive governments have sold off our NHS by stealth and have not excluded it from the trade deal negotiations.

I am passionate about our 2019 manifesto. This COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated how many of our policies are absolutely essential to the survival and quality of life of the majority in this country.

It is working people, not political careerists, who have the true power to change society. We must take back control of key sectors of the economy, so that we meets everyone’s needs, instead of feeding billionaires’ greed.

I fully support the abolition of the private school system, which entrenches privilege and entitlement in our country; making life-long education free; the development of a publicly owned, fully integrated, health and social care system; rebuilding our social housing stock to Nominators provide good, truly affordable, housing for all. Ian Hollingworth George Massey We must actively support grass roots campaigns and strengthen our trade unions.
