WILLIAM, CARDINAL ALLEN, N May 1582 the Papal Nuncio in Paris wrote to Cardinal Galli, Pope IGregory XIII's Secretary of State, to update him on yet another scheme to reconvert England and Scotland to the Catholic faith. The plan had been concocted by the Spanish Ambassador in London, Don Bernardina Men- doza, in consultation with Esme Stuart, Duke of Lennox, the French Duke de Guise, and the Jesuits William Creighton and Robert Persons. It involved landing an invasion force of 8,000 Spanish and Italian soldiers in Scotland. Expanded to 20,000 by an expected rush of devout local recruits, the army would march south into England, overthrow Elizabeth, liberate Mary Queen of Scots, and set her on the throne of both kingdoms. This half-baked scheme, which was welcomed by the Pope as a glorious new crusade, needed a religious figurehead who could command the loyalty of all English Catholics and serve as a rallying-point for soldiers, gentry and the devout Catholic faithful. Everyone agreed that there was only one possible choice. The President of the English College at Rheims, William Allen, should be appointed to the key religious and secular post in the north of England, the bishopric of Durham. Allen, the Nuncio claimed, was a man whose authority and reputation stand so high with the whole nation that his mere presence . will have a greater effect with the English than several thousand soldiers . all the banished gentlemen bear him such reverence that at a word of his they would do anything.' Wachtel 2013 Abstract My dissertation connects the Jesuit missions in Canada to the global Jesuit missionary project in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries by exploring the impact of French religious politics on the organizing of the first Canadian mission, established at Port Royal, Acadia, in 1611. After the Wars of Religion, Gallican Catholics blamed the Society for the violence between French Catholics and Protestants, portraying Jesuits as underhanded usurpers of royal authority in the name of the Pope—even accusing the priests of advocating regicide. As a result, both Port Royal’s settlers and its proprietor, Jean de Poutrincourt, never trusted the missionaries, and the mission collapsed within two years. After Virginia pirates destroyed Port Royal, Poutrincourt drew upon popular anti- Jesuit stereotypes to blame the Jesuits for conspiring with the English. Father Pierre Biard, one of the missionaries, responded with his 1616 Relation de la Nouvelle France, which described Port Royal’s Indians and narrated the Jesuits’ adventures in North America, but served primarily as a defense of their enterprise. Religio-political infighting profoundly influenced the interaction between Indians and Europeans in the earliest years of Canadian settlement. -

Loyola University Maryland [email protected] Abstract Pedro de Ribadeneyra, first official biographer of Ignatius of Loyola, showered praise upon him and his companions for abandoning immoderate sentiment “for particular lands or places” in their quest for “the glory of God and the salvation of their neigh- bors.” Superior General Goswin Nickel praised a Society conceived in Spain, born in France, approved in Italy, and propagated in Germany and elsewhere. Out of diversity Ignatius had forged unity. Ribadeneyra prayed that nothing would ever threaten this union. His prayers were not heard: the Society’s internal unity was often endangered by national sentiment despite congregational attempts to curtail and eliminate it. This article does not purport to be an exhaustive study of localism versus international- ism—although such a study is needed—but an investigation of relations between Irish and English Jesuits principally in the seventeenth century. Individual Jesuits did in fact cooperate, but there were limits. A proposal in 1652 that the independent Irish mission become part of the English mission was that limit. Quoting the beginning of Lucan’sThe Civil War—“Of wars across Emathian plains, worse than civil wars, / and of legality conferred on crime we sing, and of a mighty people / attacking its own guts with vic- torious sword-hand”—Persons notes that one need only change Thessaly to England and poetic singing to “our weeping and wailing” to accurately describe the state of England in 1607.1 Persons further explains that the reli- gious divisions wracking his native land are more than simply civil; rather, they are also domestic, dividing villages, houses, and families in a conflict that had moved beyond debate into brutal action. “Whereof,” he notes, “our continual searches, privy intelligences, bloudy and desparate conspiracies, apprehensions, imprisonments, tortures, arraignementes, condemnations and executions are most loathsome and lamentable witnesses” (3). Persons’s catalog of searches and seizures, conspiracies and punishments, reflects the troubled position during the period of not only Catholics (and in particular Jesuits) but also the presumptively loyal and settled Protestant population and their magistrates. -

Sonnet 30 E must speak by the card,1 or equivocation will undo us,” Hamlet jokes to Horatio as he attempts to extract information from the gravedigger in Act V Scene 1. While equivocation and words of the same root appear nine times in the dramatic works of Shakespeare, the substance or meaning of the word is a powerful and recurring theme in the plays, as it is also in the life of the Earl of Oxford. We see this particularly in two of the watershed events that occured during his early years, the so- called Oxford-Howard controversy of 1580-81 and the arrest and trial of Edmund Campion. If we dismiss two appearances of the weaker word equivocal,2 the more powerful words equivocate, equivocation, and equivocator appear seven times: once in Hamlet and six times in Macbeth. These plays share a common theme, the issue of regicide, also strong in a num- ber of other Shakespeare plays, particularly Richard II, and Julius Caesar. In every instance where this theme is mentioned, it is connected with the meaning of the word equivocation, if not the word itself. We believe that the root of this thematic material and its connection with the term equivocation can be found in the events of 1580-81, when the English govern- ment first launched its campaign to eliminate the threat posed by militant Catholicism to the parties in power. -

Pope Innocent VIII has died. Now the Sacred College of Cardinals must meet to choose his successor. The office of Pope is a holy calling, born of the legacy of Saint Peter the first Bishop of Rome, who was one of Christ’s most trusted apostles. The Pope is therefore God’s vicar on Earth, the temporal representation of divine authority and the pinnacle of the church hierarchy. However, the position has also become a political role, with the Holy Father a temporal ruler of the Papal States in the center of the Italian peninsula and charged with protecting the interests of the Church across Christendom. As such, the position requires not only spiritual vision but political acumen too, and, at times ruthlessness and deception, to maintain the church’s position as a secular and spiritual power in Europe. The Cardinals must therefore consider both a candidate’s spiritual and political qualifications to lead the Church. -

Fordham University [email protected] Abstract From the first encounter with King James vi of Scotland, the Society of Jesus believed in the possibility of his conversion. Such a religious transformation would reverberate beyond the northern kingdom and indeed beyond the British Isles. Finances and pro- posals were advanced to attain this goal. With noticeable encouragement from James in the 1590s as he positioned himself to ascend the English throne as Elizabeth’s suc- cessor, many Catholics rallied to his cause. Once he had ascended the throne, he could cast caution to the proverbial wind and disclose his religious allegiance. Presented here are two memorials, both most likely written by the Scottish Jesuit William Crich- ton, on the possibility of James’s conversion. The first can be dated circa 1580, at the very inception of the project; the second is post-Gunpowder Plot (1605) by which time nearly everyone had abandoned any hope in its successful completion. But Crichton, naively or optimistically, still insisted there was a chance. Carolyn Vinnicombe Recusancy and Regicide: The Flawed Strategy of the Jesuit Mission in Elizabethan England In pursuing their goals of reviving the religious zeal of the English Catholic community by converting them to religious opposition in the later sixteenth and earlier seventeenth centuries, the drivers of the Jesuit mission in England, under the guidance of the Jesuit Robert Persons, failed. They did so not because Catholic doctrine lacked appeal in protestant Elizabethan England, but because their conversion strategy was wholly unsuited to the political realities of the times. Instead, the aggregate efects of the Church’s clerical infighting over the issues of conformity and disputation as a conversion device, failure to understand the practical needs of the average Catholic, and Person’s ill-fated political plotting polarized the English against the Jesuits and created a religious and political environment so toxic that it cannibalized the mission’s own conversion eforts. Though the Jesuits saw later success with the publication of their non-polemic spiritual texts, they never succeeded in gaining back the ground they lost as a result of their catastrophic early strategy. I The issue of conformity to the Elizabethan Settlement of 1569 presented a dilemma without an absolute solution for the English Catholic community. When Pope Pius V’s Regans in Excelsis of 1570, excommunicated the queen, and prompted her regime to mandate attendance at protestant services, it left English Catholics floundering to find traction on the plane of religious devotion. Could they still call themselves Catholics if they yielded to the state and attended protestant services, but maintained Catholicism in their hearts, or were only those who defied the state and refused to attend services worthy of the “Catholic” label and, indeed, salvation? This was a question for which neither the laity nor the Church had a clear answer. -
