Signed_____________________ Gavin Doyle i SUMMARY This thesis examines the intersections of Irishness and queerness in the work of five contemporary American writers and cultural figures: Alice McDermott, James McCourt, Peggy Shaw, Eileen Myles, and Stephanie Grant. Despite the wealth of critical scholarship in the areas of Irish-American literature and culture, the queer Irish voice in America remains almost entirely neglected. The thesis argues against the mutual trends in Irish-American and gay and lesbian cultural, social, and historical discourses that centralise “progressive” narratives in terms of socio-economic and legal advances. In so doing, the project privileges the bilateral backward glance in the writing of queer scholars such as Heather Love, José Esteban Muñoz, Elizabeth Freeman, Benjamin Kahan, Jack Halberstam, Judith Butler, and David L. Eng, and in the critical interventions of Irish and Irish-American critics who challenge the truncated “success” story of the Irish in America.

    American-Irish Literary Relations Ellen McWilliams In 1953, a year after the director John Ford’s film The Quiet Man drew international audiences with its vivid story of transatlantic return, Irish-American author John A. O’Brien published a volume of essays in the United States, The Vanishing Irish: The Enigma of the Modern World, that expressed grave concerns about the future of the Irish. The collection called for urgent action to halt rural depopulation and mass emigration from Ireland and comprised, in part, commentaries and recommendations as to how the Irish government might best respond to this emergency. 1953 saw the first An Tóstal celebration, a festival that called home the diaspora in a celebration of Irish culture and hospitality and issued a particularly warm welcome to sons and daughters in America. In August of the same year, Life magazine led with the dramatic headline ‘Irish Invade Fashion World’ and featured a richly illustrated fashion editorial to celebrate the rapturous reception of Sybil Connolly’s designs in New York, a fashion moment that formed a new impression of Irish sophistication and style. Abstract My book and accompanying critical analysis argue that the connections be- tween the struggle for civil rights in Ireland and black America have been strong and underplayed for over a century and a half. The book traced the historical links from the 1840s with a focus on the 1960s, and brought new perspectives to the academic research of both contexts, which had gener- ally been explored separately. By reflecting on a review of literature pro- duced since 1998, the critical analysis shows how the book has influenced academic reach since, including on the transnational connections between the two experiences. It also explores how the civil rights movements in both countries have inspired and guided contemporary struggles, notably those in the Middle East, and continue to inform and guide activists and policy- makers.
