Based on Jeffrey Wainwright, George Lansing Raymond, and Liu Xie’s theories, this study was conducted from four perspectives: theme, content, prosody structure and aesthetic features. The purposes of my thesis are to trace the originality of 160 folk songs in Shijing and 47 folk songs in Han yuefu , to illuminate the origin of Chinese folk songs and to demonstrate the secularism reflected in Chinese folk songs. My research makes contribution to the following four areas: it explores the relation between folk songs in Shijing and Han yuefu and compares the similarities and differences between them ; it reveals the poetic kinship between Shijing and Han yuefu; it evaluates the significance of the common people’s compositions; and it displays the unique artistic value and cultural influence of Chinese early folk songs. ii Acknowledgments I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor Professor Graham Sanders for his supervision, inspirations, and encouragements during my two years M.A study in the Department of East Asian Studies at University of Toronto. -

Thanks to the work of scholars like Ellen Widmer, Dorothy Ko, Susan Mann and Kang-i Sun Chang, to mention only a few, reference to a woman in China’s imperial past conjures up the image of a strong and sophisticated woman holding a book rather than a picture of the bound foot.1 No student of China’s late imperial period (roughly between 1500 and 1900) could justifiably claim unfamiliarity with the Chinese woman writer. -

Your You know how to go through this: eat well, sleep enough, breath? What are you seeing? Hearing? Touching? move your body, and stay connected to the people in your life. Do what is important to do to keep yourself men- Now, smile! Smile inwardly and outwardly. Remember: A tally, emotionally, and physically healthy. Turn off your smile has no boundary—it spreads joy, replicates kindness, television and get your news only from the most reliable and infects others with being seen just for who they are. -

The goodness of water is that it benefits the ten thousand creatures; yet itself does not scramble, but is content with the places that all men disdain. It is this that makes water so near the Way [the dao]. Laozi, chapter 81 In the field of comparative literature, one of the most important topics of study has been how Eastern and Western traditions organize differently the relationship between humans and things, as articulated in metaphysics and as manifest in literary devices. Cecile Chu-chin Sun, to cite here one of the finest studies, compares Romantic metaphor with the Chinese poetic device xing 興, as well as the metaphysical traditions each represents. Sun argues that while metaphor epitomizes the Romantic concept of creation as an anthropocentric transference of concrete things into an immaterial realm of imagination, xing envisions a Chinese metaphysical view where a resonance between humans and nature is usually not explicitly stated, but rather intuitively felt. Comparing the relationship between “tenor” and “vehicle” in metaphor on the one hand, where the thing is transfigured to bear the human meaning, and “feeling” (qing 情) and “scene” (jing 景)inxing on the other, where the two affectively correspond, Sun effectively shows how different metaphysical views yield different relations between humans and things in literary expressions (Sun 2006). -

Nostalgia and Resistance: Gender and the Poetry of Chen Yinke Wai-yee Li 李惠儀 Harvard University On June 2, 1927, the great scholar and poet Wang Guowei 王國維 (1877- 1927) drowned himself at Lake Kunming in the Imperial Summer Palace in Beijing. There was widespread perception at the time that Wang had committed suicide as a martyr for the fallen Qing dynasty, whose young deposed emperor had been Wang’s student. However, Chen Yinke 陳寅恪 (1890-1969), Wang’s friend and colleague at the Qinghua Research Institute of National Learning, offered a different interpretation in the preface to his “Elegy on Wang Guowei” 王觀堂先生輓詞并序: For today’s China is facing calamities and crises without precedents in its several thousand years of history. With these calamities and crises reaching ever more dire extremes, how can those whose very being represents a condensation and realization of the spirit of Chinese culture fail to identify with its fate and perish along with it? This was why Wang Guowei could not but die.1 Two years later, Chen elaborated upon the meaning of Wang’s death in a memorial stele: He died to make manifest his will to independence and freedom. This was neither about personal indebtedness and grudges, nor about the rise or fall of one ruling house… His writings may sink into oblivion; his teachings may yet be debated. But this spirit of independence and freedom of thought…will last for eternity with heaven and earth.2 Between these assertions from 1927 and 1929 is a rhetorical elision of potentially different positions. -

Highway Dharma Letters: Two Buddhist Pilgrims Write to Their Teacher The Second Edition of News from True Cultivators by Heng Sure and Heng Chau With a Foreword by Huston Smith Foreword to the Second Edition I have written forewords to more than forty-five books, but I say with- out hesitation that I have never been as honored—and humbled—as I am to have been invited to write this one. This is the most neglected book of the twentieth century—I say this categorically and with com- plete confidence. Come to think of it, though, this stands to reason, for humility requires that authentic spirituality and public relations stand in inverse ration to each other. (“When you pray, go into your closet.”) Humility shows itself also in the fact that the “News” in the title takes the form of daily letters written to the Venerable Master Hsuan Hua, by his two disciples who made the eight-hundred-mile journey from Gold Wheel Temple in South Pasadena to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas near Ukiah. They covered the distance in the traditional penitential way: three steps followed by a full prostration. One took a vow of complete silence for the duration of the pilgrimage and three years beyond; the other managed practical affairs, did all the talking, driving, cooking, and dealing with occasionally hostile visitors, while still finding time to bow. Having said that this is the most overlooked book of the twenti- eth century, I want only to add that I find it one of the most inspir- ing. -
