At the latest Vedanta Memoirs session at the Society’s Guru Purnima Celebration on Sunday, July 9, we were taken to the place where the seeds of the modern Vedanta movement in Australia were sown. It was in his childhood that Dr.Rick Spencer first came into contact with Vedanta. His mother, Vilma, was the proud host on numerous occasions of the Government of India sponsored international lecturer, Swami Ranga- nathananda. The Swami, late President of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, was like a fascinating, fun-filled grandfatherly figure for the 12 year old Rick. Rick also described his many years of close contact with the Vedanta movement in Australia, the U.S and England including his close contact with his Guru, Swami Asheshananda, late head of the Vedanta Society of Portland and disciple of Holy Mother Another long-time member of our Society, Julie Fotherby, also shared her memories. The iconic Sydney educa- tor in etiquette and deportment for young women, June Dally-Watkins, was progressive enough in the 1970s to include yoga classes in her courses conducted by ‘the Mother of Yoga’ in Australia, Roma Blair. That was Julie’s first experience of the peaceful power of Yoga leading to an exploration of meditation and Vedanta, after discover- ing the Vedanta Bookshop in the Rocks in the late 1970s. Swami Prabuddhanandaji and myself met for the first time at the Belur Math in the year 1956 where both of us had come to receive our Brahmacharya-diksha—he from Bangalore and me from Bombay. Since then we had close connection with each other. We met again at the Belur Math in the year 1960 where we came for our Sannyasa-diksha from Most Revered Swami Sankaranandaji Maharaj. I admired his balanced approach to everything that had kept the San Francisco centre vibrant. In 2000 A.D. he had invited me to San Francisco to attend the Centenary Celebrations of the San Francisco centre. He took me also to Olema and other retreats on the occasion. Once he came just on a visit to meet the old Swami at the Belur Math. In sum, Swami Prabuddhanandaji was an asset to our Order, and his leaving us is a great loss.

  • Balancing Inner and Outer
    Editorial Balancing Inner and Outer As the Holy Mother Sesquicentennial Year nears its conclusion, this is perhaps a good time to take stock of what we have learned from Holy Mother’s life and teachings. As spiritual aspirants, we gain a great deal of inspiration for our interior life from her teachings on devotion, work, knowledge, self-effort and self-surrender. From her life, we see how a person living in domestic circumstances can be pure and non-attached as well as loving and concerned. She played her part faultlessly, showing how the highest ideals can be made practical in the workaday world. In some ways her workaday world was a very different place from ours. She did not face the stress of the modern workplace or such a dizzying pace of technological change. But Holy Mother’s world did include terrorism, including state terror, political upheaval, and social stress. Great teachers do not always give us specific answers to specific external challenges. Rather, they give us examples and principles that help us to make the right decisions as we respond to our own particular challenges. We have to engage in our own struggle in our own circumstances. One thing is clear: Holy Mother never attempted to escape or run away from difficulties. Think of her life in the cramped, stuffy Nahabat, without toilet facilities, with fish for her husband’s delicate stomach splashing water all night from a pot hung from the ceiling. Think of her difficulties in Kamarpukur after the Master’s passing, with hardly enough to eat or wear and the constant criticism of her neighbors.

  • Spiritual Conversations with Swami Shankarananda Swami Tejasananda English Translation by Swami Satyapriyananda (Continued from the Previous Issue)
    2 THE ROAD TO WISDOM Swami Vivekananda on Significance of Symbols—III n the heart of all these ritualisms, there Istands one idea prominent above all the rest—the worship of a name. Those of you who have studied the older forms of Christianity, those of you who have studied the other religions of the world, perhaps have marked that there is this idea with them all, the worship of a name. A name is said to be very sacred. In the Bible we read that the holy name of God was considered sacred beyond compare, holy consciously or unconsciously, man found beyond everything. It was the holiest of all the glory of names. names, and it was thought that this very Again, we find that in many different Word was God. This is quite true. What is religions, holy personages have been this universe but name and form? Can you worshipped. They worship Krishna, they think without words? Word and thought worship Buddha, they worship Jesus, and so are inseparable. Try if anyone of you can forth. Then, there is the worship of saints; separate them. Whenever you think, you hundreds of them have been worshipped all are doing so through word forms. The one over the world, and why not? The vibration brings the other; thought brings the word, of light is everywhere. The owl sees it in the and the word brings the thought. Thus the dark. That shows it is there, though man whole universe is, as it were, the external cannot see it. To man, that vibration is only symbol of God, and behind that stands visible in the lamp, in the sun, in the moon, His grand name.

  • Taking Our Temperature
    Editorial Taking Our Temperature In the current issue of American Vedantist, we present different perspectives on the Vedanta movement in the West, from Swami Vivekananda’s pioneering work to new models for the future. These perspectives offer a variety of views about the role of Vedanta in the West: how it was presented in the beginning, how it is being lived out in most of our centers at present, and what are our hopes for it in the future. Is Vedanta a universal philosophy independent of any particular religion? Or is it a sophisticated form of Hinduism? How has Vedanta in the West changed since Swami Vivekananda’s original presentation? Do Vedanta Centers in the West have social responsibilities with regard to the surrounding society? Should they undertake social service activities as the Ramakrishna Mission does in India? Have the centers become Hindu temples and cultural centers for a mostly Indian immigrant population? Does it matter? How should they serve what is now an American minority of members? Do native- born Americans, including the children of Indian immigrants, have different needs from the immigrants themselves? Is Indian culture an obstacle to prospective new Western Vedantists? We encourage you, our readers, to send us your opinions on these questions. From its inception, one of AV’s main objectives has been to foster a sense of community among Vedantists in the West through the sharing of views and experiences. Such sharing can encourage us to reexamine our own lives, and can also contribute to strengthening our combined efforts. We have inherited a legacy of high spiritual idealism.

  • Government of India Honours YSS by Releasing a Commemorative
    Government of India Honours YSS by Releasing a Commemorative Postage Stamp For a YSS devotee, March 7 is associated with several sacred events that are close to his heart. Sixty-ve years ago, on this very day in 1952, Paramahansa Yogananda had entered Mahasamadhi, speaking of God and his beloved India. In 1977, the Government of India had honoured Guruji by releasing a commemorative stamp on this day, thus formally recognizing his tremendous contributions to the spiritual wealth of the world. And this year on March 7, the Prime Minister of India, Sri Narendra Modi, paid a tting tribute to the organization founded by the Premavatar by re- leasing a commemorative stamp in honour of Yogoda Satsanga Society of India at a special cer- emony held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. Over 1,800 YSS dev- otees attended the programme. Several monks from YSS including the Board of Directors participated in this historic event. e Prime Minister was cordially greeted by Swamis Vishwananda and Smaranananda at the entrance and escorted to the hall. e pro- gramme began with the Prime Minister, Sri Narendra Modi, along with the YSS Board of Directors, lighting the lamp. Swami Vishwananda wel- comed the Prime Minister by presenting him with a bouquet of owers, and Swami Smaranananda presented a shawl to the esteemed guest as a mark of honour. Swami Smaranananda began his address by quoting a shloka from the Bhagavad Gita which states that in every yuga, avatars come to protect vir- tue and destroy evil. However, Swamiji added that there are some avatars 64 Y S whose mission is to help devotees annihilate the demons of maya within; and that our beloved Gurudeva was one such avatar who came to guide deluded humanity towards divine wisdom.

    SWAMI GAHANANANDA RAMAKRISHNA MATH BELUR MATH HOWRAH 711 202 Publisher: Swami Atmasthananda Ramakrishna Math Belur Math, Howrah 711202 16 th November 2007 All rights reserved Price: Printed by: SWAMI GAHANANANDA Some monks were once going to the Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama at Sarisha by car. On the way the car broke down. Everyone was anxious about reaching Sarisha on time as it would be two or three hours before the car was repaired. A monk got down from the car and quietly walked away, and soon disappeared beyond the green meadows. After the car was repaired, the monks went in search of him and found him seated quite unconcerned under a tree and talking to some villagers about religious life. Unmindful of thirst and hunger, he was doing the sanctifying work of preaching for about two hours. This monk was none other than Swami Gahananandaji Maharaj, who later became the fourteenth President of the Ramakrishna Order. The pre-monastic name of Swami Gahananandaji was Nareshranjan Roychoudhury. On Durga Puja Mahashtami Tithi in the year 1916, he was born in the family of Devaroy belonging to Bharadwaj Gotra, in a village called Paharpur which was under Baniyachang in the district of Sylhet (now Habiganj District in Bangladesh). His father was Rajkrishna Roychoudhury and mother was Sukhamayi Devi. They had four sons — Rakeshranjan, Sureshranjan, Bireshranjan, and Nareshranjan. From childhood, Nareshranjan was indrawn, of controlled speech, possessing an excellent personality and leadership qualities. The qualities essential for making a mark in later life were manifest in Nareshranjan from his boyhood. Even when he was young, Nareshranjan exhibited a keen intellect, always passing the examinations in First Class at school.

  • The Ramakrishna Movement in Srilanaka by Swami Virupakshanand
    THE RAMAKRISHNA MOVEMENT IN SRI LANKA 1 CHAPTER ONE THE ORIGIN OF THE MOVEMENT When Sri Ramakrishna had attained perfection in all the sadhanas and had become firmly established in Bhava mukha, he came to certain conclusions regarding himself and spiritual matters in general. Regarding himself he had the conviction that he was an Incarnation of God, an Adhikarika Purusha all of whose spiritual strivings were for the sake of others; that as long as the work of Iswara’s doing good to jivas continues, he has to reincarnate himself from age to age and carry out that mission; that he knew the time of his passing away long before his mahasamadhi. Regarding spiritual matters in general he came to realize both by reason and through his yogic insight that all religions are true and the various faiths are but so many paths to The One Godhead; his advent was to reveal this truth to the world and arrest the decline of religions and the quarrelling among themselves; the doctrines of dualism, qualified monism and monism influenced each one according to his spiritual progress; they are not contradictory, but complimentary to one another, depending on the evolution of the human mind; the non-dual state of Consciousness which is beyond the range of thought and word, is the ultimate goal to be realized; only the state up to qualified non-dualism can be grasped, by the mind and intellect and expressed in words, and in that state both the Absolute and the relative are equally eternal; the Lord Himself, His Name and His Abode are all of pure Consciousness;

MESSAGE My dear Jivanananda, I received your letter of 3rd December and am very happy to learn that the Ramakrishna Mission Boys’ Home, Batticaloa, Sri Lanka is completing seventy five years of service and that you are bringing out a Souvenir to commemorate the occasion. The Home has rendered singular service to poor and orphaned children, helping hundreds of them to stand on their own feet. In so doing, it has fulfilled Swami Vivekananda’s exhortation to serve the most deprived sections of our society in the spirit of worship. I myself have visited the Ashrama more than once. Its work is very much appreciated even by the Sri Lankan Government. On the occasion of the Platinum Jubilee I convey to all those associated with the Ashrama my love and blessings so that they may continue to serve the people of Sri Lanka.
