José Maldonado Escribano. 2 “Makoto Shinkai: La Distancia”. Resumen Este trabajo aborda la vida y la obra de Makoto Shinkai. Durante la primera parte del trabajo, hablaremos sobre el contexto cinematográfico en el que el director japonés ha crecido y madurado como cineasta. También haremos un recorrido por su carrera, desde que se sintió atraído por la animación, hasta la actualidad. Otro tema importante será de que fuentes ha bebido para ser lo que es, es decir, todas las influencias que ha tenido, tanto filmográficas, como literarias y hablaremos sobre el estilo que frecuenta en toda su obra. Y por supuesto mencionaremos todos los premios y reconocimientos obtenidos en estos años. Después de realizar el mencionado repaso de Makoto, haremos un análisis cinematográfico de todos sus largometrajes. Empezaremos por su primera película, El Lugar que nos Prometimos (2004), 5cm Por Segundo (2007), Viaje a Agartha (2011), El Jardín de las Palabras (2013), y Your Name (2016). -

Kotatsu Japanese Animation Film Festival 2017 In partnership with the Japan Foundation Chapter - September 29th - October 1st, 2017 Aberystwyth Arts Centre – October 28th, 2017 The Largest Festival of Japanese Animation in Wales Announces Dates, Locations and Films for 2017 The Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival returns to Wales for another edition in 2017 with audiences able to enjoy a whole host of Welsh premieres, a Japanese marketplace, and a Q&A and special film screening hosted by an important figure from the Japanese animation industry. The festival begins in Cardiff at Chapter Arts on the evening of Friday, September 29th with a screening of Masaaki Yuasa’s film The Night is Short, Walk on Girl (2017), a charming romantic romp featuring a love-sick student chasing a girl through the streets of Kyoto, encountering magic and weird situations as he does so. Festival head, Eiko Ishii Meredith will be on hand to host the opening ceremony and a party to celebrate the start of the festival which will last until October 01st and include a diverse array of films from near-future tales Napping Princess (2017) to the internationally famous mega-hit Your Name (2016). The Cardiff portion of the festival ends with a screening of another Yuasa film, the much-requested Mind Game (2004), a film definitely sure to please fans of surreal and adventurous animation. This is the perfect chance for people to see it on the big-screen since it is rarely screened. A selection of these films will then be screened at the Aberystywth Arts Centre on October 28th as Kotatsu helps to widen access to Japanese animated films to audiences in different locations. -

Virtual Spectating: Hearing Beyond the Video Arcade Norman Makoto Su Patrick C. Shih School of Information and Library Studies Department of Informatics University College Dublin University of California, Irvine Dublin 4, Ireland Irvine, CA 92697-9440 [email protected] [email protected] The latest in the most popular head-to-head fighting video series, Super Street Fighter IV by Capcom, now features spectating functionality. Coupled with audio chat, players can both watch and participate in matches with anyone in the world. We describe a video analysis of over 36 hours of gameplay in SSF4. Our results show that players can deftly structure audio when spectating to transform gameplay in SSF4. This new hybrid spectator sport in which boundaries between actor and audience are blurred exhibits three significant characteristics: the audio recreates the arcade culture, appropriates “invisible” but real players, and symbolically creates power relations between mute and speaking gamers. We also present exploratory evidence that suggests a starkly different experience for female gamers who wish to audibly join in virtual spectating. religions Article Being Someplace Else: The Theological Virtues in the Anime of Makoto Shinkai Matthew John Paul Tan School of Philosophy & Theology, University of Notre Dame Australia, Sydney 2008, Australia; [email protected] Received: 28 January 2020; Accepted: 27 February 2020; Published: 2 March 2020 Abstract: This work explores the ways in which the anime of Makoto Shinkai cinematically portrays the theological virtues of faith, hope and love. The article will explore each virtue individually, with specific reference to the work of Josef Pieper and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. In addition, it will juxtapose their explorations of these virtues with samples of Shinkai’s corpus of films. It will assert that the consistency of Shinkai’s work reveals several important parallels with the theological virtues. Faith is the encounter between one and another that reveals one’s nature. Hope is revealed by the distance between one and another, and is realised in traversing that distance to achieve an ecstatic reunion. Love, as the erotic attraction between one and another, is the driver that also sustains the journey and closes the distance. In spite of the similarities, important differences between the cinematic and theological will be highlighted. Keywords: anime; virtue; Pieper; Benedict; distance; faith; hope; love 1. Introduction In this work, I focus on the work of the anime director, Makoto Shinkai, who is part of a wave of anime directors rising to prominence after the mainstream success of Hayao Miyazaki. I chose Shinkai for a number of reasons, the first is that with Miyazaki ostensibly going into retirement, Shinkai is now being billed as one of the front-runners for the directors most likely to fill the void in anime that Miyazaki left behind.
