I found exactly what I was looking for in 3ZERO3 Motorsports and their talented advisor Max Gerson (another PCA member). I visited Max at the shop; he poured me a beer from the kegerator they keep in the special tools room, and I was very much drinking his Kool Aid, but I must say I have never been happier. Together we executed a plan to supercharge the car with a VF Engineering kit. We also added a full 997 GT3RS performance exhaust from Fabspeed, and Eichbach sport springs (PASM compliant) rounded out the mechanical upgrades. Inside the cabin, an OEM sport shifter was added, and outside the car we replaced the bumpers with GT3RS units, a Getty ducktail spoiler, and 997 spec- 2 LED tail lights. 3ZERO3 Motorsports was my proxy as we asked Apex Auto Body to fit the bumpers and spoiler. I must say that I have become extremely picky in my old age, but Dave and the guys at Apex did a fantastic job making this work. Now I own a 997 unlike any other car I have ever seen. So what’s next? I am planning on some exterior upgrades, and possibly adding another car to my collection. I welcome all calls from beaten-up 964 c2 owners.

JANUARY 2014 15 16 Georgetown Lake Saturday, January 18th Eiskhana, the slickest event of the year, is a fun day to enjoy the unique experience of driving on ice. It will be a great opportunity to test your car, your tires and your skill. The event will be run like an autocross; “cone chasing” will be required when you are not driving. Since January in Georgetown is cold and often windy, plan to dress in layers and wear warm boots, hats and gloves. Runs will be timed for the purposes of bragging rights. Porsches are of course welcome, but not required— feel free to bring your winter driver with snow tires or studded tires. No pre-tech will be required. Since speeds and g-forces are low, we will not require top tech, but we highly recommend de-cluttering your car before you drive. Restroom facilities will be available, but there will be no concessions or refreshments provided—although you could make your own “snow cones.” Hint from the school of (literal) hard knocks: The ice on Georgetown Lake is very slippery. While your car won’t tip over, walking can be hazardous. Wearing ice grippers on your feet will help you stay upright. Upright is good. There is no pre- registration; just show up in the morning and register onsite. Contact event chair Angela Hill ([email protected]) for details.

22 First-ever class win by a woman in La Carrera Panamericana

Story by Renée Brinkerhoff, photos provided by author

Wow! Why in the world would you want to do that? If you started racing in your 50s, you may have heard similar questions, but regardless of people’s quizzical looks, I wasn’t going to be deterred from going after my dream. I spent a lifetime talking about racing and hoping that one day I could give it a try. So when life presented me with the time and means to take the leap forward, I realized I had to either get after it or quit talking. After talking with a relative who had successfully raced vintage cars for over 30 years, I determined that a Porsche 356 would suit me just fine. I purchased my 1956 356A in As I had no prior racing experience, I took a couple of California in the fall of 2011 and it happily joined my 2007 Porsche Sport Driving School courses, had Hurley Haywood Carrera S. Shortly after taking possession of the vehicle, I by my side on one blessed day, and took private instruction realized my “A+++ restored car” was a pretty picture at best in Denver from Michael Pettiford. and everything beneath the surface needed an overhaul. To After a brief discussion on the different types of racing, prepare the car, I brought it to Colorado and put it in the I decided rally events were for me. I zeroed in on La Carrera capable hands of Greg Johnson from Eurosport. Panamericana, south of the border in Mexico. Before making that deep a commitment, I decided it was paramount that I go as an observer or preferably a crewmember to confirm that this was something I was passionate about doing. I found a car owner in California who had run the event twice before and needed a partner. After going that year and sharing the driving and navigating, it was vastly clear I’d found my race! Upon my return from Mexico in November 2012, Eurosport immediately started preparing my car. The prepared car had to be fast, “street legal,” and able to endure seven grueling days, driving nearly 1900 miles. Shortly after starting the car prep, I started the hunt for a navigator/co-piloto. I contacted Gerie Bledsoe, the North American liaison, with my navigator wish list: young, Mexican, male with navigating experience. Young because he might be more progressive in his thinking when it came to riding with a woman driver. Mexican because he would know the language, roads and culture, and male because I didn’t like the prospect of driving through Mexico without a man in the car. Gerie found just the person. Continues, next page

JANUARY 2014 23 Roberto Mendoza had run La Carrera Panamericana three times and was very involved with rally racing in Mexico. After a few email exchanges, he agreed to join me. Now I needed a crew. George Arriola, a member of the COPS team that runs the Baja 1000, knew Spanish and Mexico and agreed to be my crew chief. Jake Stull, who works under the tutelage of Greg Johnson, joined the team as chief mechanic. Jake worked on my car throughout the build project and knew it intimately. Other than our accident on day six, we never missed one speed section or race day. Our crew kept wet, mossy roads. Day Six saw several in the southern states, the race zigzags its us racing with confidence every day. cars off the road, including mine. We way through central Mexico. We knew we had first in class securely in our hand, as our lead was too great for our class competitors to catch us. Our winning team gave me the honor to be the first woman driver to have a daily class win and, more significantly, a class win for the entire event. No woman has ever, in the history of La Carrera Panamericana, podiumed first. In addition to winning our class, the 1956 356A won the award for most beautiful 2013 La Carrera Panamericana racecar—a sweet cherry on our cake! It’s important to note that no one can win or even finish this race without an outstanding crew and navigator. Our success was truly a team effort. We may never finish on top again, but this year we made a dream become reality!
