SCREENING A DOOR AJAR PLAYTIME Directed by Jacques Tati THURSDAY APRIL 3 2014 | 7:30PM PLAYTIME. DIRECTED BY JACQUES TATI. PARIS, FRANCE: SPECTRA FILMS, 1967 SCREENING A DOOR AJAR PLAYTIME Directed by Jacques Tati THURSDAY APRIL 3 2014 | 7:30PM Playtime is a hilarious and gloriously choreographed cinematic masterpiece about the modern city and the confusion it creates. Jacques Tati’s final film, Playtime took three years to complete and famously bankrupted its director. The film follows Monsieur Hulot through a series of absurd scenarios that turn a critical eye on commercialism, entertainment, mass media, tourism, and modernist architecture. Shot in 70mm, Tati constructed a film set so elaborate that it became a facsimile of a functional city. Playtime will be presented on an outdoor screen on the hill alongside the glass curtain wall of the EMPAC building. --- Jacques Tati began his career as a screenplay writer and actor. In 1949, he created the character of François in Jour de Fête, which won the prize for best screenplay at Venice. In Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot, he created the awkward and optimistic eponymous character for which he is best known. Tati directed six feature length films, and played the lead role of Monsieur Hulot in four of these. In 1958, Mon Oncle was awarded the Prix Méliès at the Festival de Cannes and an Academy Award for best foreign film. Over a decade later, Tati shot Playtime, a film that did not achieve the commercial success that was hoped for, despite eventually becoming a cult classic. In 1972, Tati directed Trafic, the fourth and last chapter in the Hulot series, followed by Parade in 1974.

  • Stefan Firca Dissertation
Circles and Circuses: Carnivalesque Tropes in the Late 1960s Musical and Cultural Imagination DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University by Stefan Firca , B.M., M.A. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2011 Dissertation Committee: Professor Arved Ashby, Advisor Professor Graeme Boone Professor Danielle Fosler-Lussier Copyright by Stefan Firca 2011 Abstract Circus, fairground, carousel, carnival imagery is everywhere during the late 1960s: in cover art, song lyrics, band names and song titles, music criticism, names of music venues, festivals, movies, literature. From circus tents to clowns, from jugglers to magicians, from carousels to parades, an entire carnivalesque lexis seems to be at play in what is generally termed “psychedelia.” The current study attempts to read and offer “thick description” (Geertz) of this vocabulary as part of a larger cultural and countercultural imagination, and integrate musical manifestations of the period (popular psychedelia and avant-garde / experimental music) in a semiotic network of metaphoric representation. If language is nothing more than a chain of metaphors (Lakoff), it is nevertheless true that we often take such metaphors as “rock ’n’ roll circus,” “song-carousel,” “riot of sound” for granted, since they are so widespread and culturally shared that an explanation of their meaning may appear pedantic. But what do these word-images actually mean? What is the range of their connotations? What is the relationship between them? Why are they so frequent in the late 1960s? And how are these tropes translated or suggested musically? One possible answer to the last question involves the broad concept of circularity , emblematic for the psychedelic era: a round melodic motive or harmonic progression, ii a cyclic phrase articulation, a motoric-recurrent riff, a spiraling or whirling waltz in triple time.

  • The Choreography of the Gaze: Looking Back at Spectators in Works by Pina Bausch and Jacques Tati
The choreography of the gaze: looking back at spectators in works by Pina Bausch and Jacques Tati Nitin Vengurlekar A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of the Arts and Media Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences University of New South Wales November 2018 Thesis/Dissertation Sheet Surname/Family Name : VENGURLEKAR Given Name/s : NITIN Abbreviation for degree as give in the University calendar : PhD Faculty : Arts and Social Sciences School : Arts and Media The choreography of the gaze: looking back at spectators in works by Pina Bausch Thesis Title : and Jacques Tati Abstract 350 words maximum: (PLEASE TYPE) This thesis proposes a new theory of the gaze to understand specific choreographic strategies of dance-theatre practitioner Pina Bausch and film-maker Jacques Tati and their potential impact on spectators. It examines how Bausch in her early works Blaubart (1977) and Café Müller (1978) and Tati in his masterpiece Play Time (1967) conceive of and deploy choreography as a critical practice and framework for exploring and ultimately reorganising the relationship between being and seeing in the new physical and politico-cultural spaces of post-World War Two modernity. By interpreting the mutually illuminating strategies of Bausch and Tati in relation to recent work on the Lacanian gaze, I come to argue that these artists use choreography not simply to facilitate critical looking and self-reflexivity but also to disrupt the spectator’s capacity to position herself altogether in relation to images. I describe this disruptiveness as a process through which gestures and spaces stop meaning and start looking back at spectators.

  • A Walk Through the City with Jacques Tati
Lessons from dogs – a walk through the city with Jacques Tati A critic once defined Jacques Tati’s work Playtime (1967) as “a film that comes from another planet, where they make films differently,” 1 at the same time the film as a commercial flop, compounded by the long perfectionist work on it, contributed to the financial bankruptcy of the director. This is a truly different way of making films – cinema that is not only for the eyes. Let us say that what makes his films strange and actual even from today’s point of view are the sound environment, the absurdity and humor whose potential is concentrated in the “ambient sound,” and the architecture of the film. The sound arises from the humor and vice versa. Humor introduces every sound, while the sounds and movements are a method of film- making, both comedic and cinematic. Tati does not deconstruct or deterritorialize modernity, does not show funny scenes of the “fall of modernity.” One could rather say that his methods are inscribed in the principles of modernity. Lending form to the patterns of modernity and progress not only by basing his films on technological innovations such as “a new color process” or shooting on 70mm film, he creates his futurist urban transgressions in a “futuristic glass-and-steel Paris” with its “high-tech vagaries.” Tati explores the aesthetic character of modern capitalism and notions of stylishness and fashion and architecture, which he turns into “ingenious set-designs” for his films. He concentrates with an amazingly keen sense on the absurdity of the relations and “ludicrous synchronization” between human and machine, between subjectivity and dispositif, between day-to-day life and visual imagery in an artificial environment, as he follows the transformation of a society of discipline to one of control and self-control after the Second World War.
