Started as a four- day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, for free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala, Isabel Allende, and former U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Long Beach, Calif., along with the TEDActive simulcast in Palm Springs. The annual TEDGlobal conference is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland. TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily, the recently launched TED-Ed platform for students and educators, the Open Translation Project—which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide—and TEDBooks, short e-books by speakers that elaborate on a single idea originally presented on TED's stage. In addition, TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, which helps world-changing innovators from around the globe become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where “x” signifies an independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. About TEDxLIU In the spirit of inspiration and innovations worth spreading, TEDxLIU is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience on Long Island, N.Y. TEDxLIU is organized by a team of LIU faculty, staff, and students. Live presentations and performances are provided to spark deep discussion and connection in the community. Through live presentations using multimedia, TEDxLIU hopes to connect the world’s brightest minds in various disciplines together to change attitudes, lives, and, ultimately, the world. 2 2 The Innovator Within Program Schedule Time Speaker Title 8-9 a.m. Coffee and Danish Reception: Hillwood Gallery 9-9:10 a.m. Louie Schwartzberg TED talk video: Nature, Beauty, and Gratitude 9:10-9:15 a.m. MC Matthew Coleman, Opening TEDxLIU Program Coordinator 9:15-9:20 a.m. Rita Langdon, Executive Introduction of the TEDxLIU Team Director of Strategic Introduction of the TEDxLIU Sponsors: Partnerships and 1) Logojoe, 2) LIU Post Alumni Assocation, 3) Operations, LIU GEICO, 4) Apple 9:20-9:45 a.m. Dr. Richard Keeling, The Once and Future Entrepreneur: Principal and Senior Discovery, Innovation, and the Prepared Mind Executive Consultant, Keeling & Associates, LLC 9:45-10:10 a.m. David Kline, Information Technology and Technology Senior Vice President for Leadership … from Basement to C-Suite Technology and Chief Information Officer, Viacom Inc. 10:10-10:35 a.m. Arel Moodie The Surprisingly Simple Question That Top Generation Y Sparks Innovation Entrepreneur 10:35-11 a.m. Joana Vicente Keep Walking—How to Achieve Your Goals Executive Director, or Crossing the Street in Saigon: A Metaphor Independent Filmmaker for the Young Entrepreneur Project and Made in NY Media Center by IFP 11-11:30 a.m. Jill Bolte Taylor Intermission and TED video: A Stroke of Insight 11:30-11:45 a.m. Patrick Graziosi, Break to Create Undergraduate Film Major, School of Visual and Performing Arts, LIU Post 11:45 a.m.- Rakesh Bhargava, What I Didn’t Learn in School … Lessons 12:10 p.m. Manager, General from a Serial Entrepreneur Partner MangoTree Real Estate Holdings L.P. 12:10-12:35 p.m. Dr. William Brennan, Why Schools must Focus On Un-Learning Co-Founder, SchoolLeadership20.com 12:35-12:50 p.m. Dr. Dengting Boyanton Award Ceremony: Certificates Awarded to and Dr. Vincent TEDxLIU speakers Scovetta, Co-Directors of TEDxLIU 12:50-1 p.m. Dr. Robert Hannafin Closing: Thank You and Good Bye Dean, College of Education, Information, and Technology 3 The Innovator Within Speakers Richard Keeling, Principal and Senior Executive Consultant of Keeling & Associates, LLC Richard P. Keeling, M.D., leads Keeling & Associates, LLC (K&A), a comprehensive higher education consulting practice. K&A’s mission is to improve outcomes in higher education by creating change for learning. At the heart of his leadership of K&A are the belief and commitment that learning should be transformative and at the core of the mission of colleges and universities, and that sound processes of institutional renewal can enable campuses to improve learning in its broadest sense. Dr. Keeling serves on the Board of Directors of the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education and has been president of four professional organizations in higher education. He has edited three sequential publications that focus on improving learning: Learning Reconsidered, Learning Reconsidered II, and Assessment Reconsidered. Dr. Keeling and Dr. Richard Hersh recently published We’re Losing Our Minds: Rethinking American Higher Education (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012), a book argues for substantial change in the culture of higher education to support higher quality and better value in undergraduate education in the United States. Before creating K&A, Dr. Keeling was a tenured faculty member and a senior student affairs administrator at the University of Virginia and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. For more than 20 years, Dr. Keeling has taught and practiced medicine, directed comprehensive health programs and services, developed collaborative programs in undergraduate education with academic departments and faculty, and explored innovative, cross-institutional approaches to advance student learning. Talk: The Once and Future Entrepreneur: Discovery, Innovation, and the Prepared Mind Summary: Higher education graduates students, but does it prepare their minds for innovation? “New” ideas always spring from foundations laid earlier; many “innovations” are adaptations, customizations, or even renewals of their predecessors—which are often unrecognized and frequently unacknowledged. Today’s effusive rhetoric (such as “disruptive”) usually overstates both novelty and significance; early claims are seldom matched by later outcomes. More and better creations will come from entrepreneurs whose minds are prepared for discovery and whose attitudes and motivation are shaped with respect for other innovators—past, present, and future. Higher education should be an accessible warehouse of intellectual and creative resources and talents that help future entrepreneurs leverage their curiosity and imagination. We need colleges and universities that prepare minds for discovery and innovation. True higher learning is the crucible of innovation; it should be the focus of every institution of higher education. 4 The Innovator Within Speakers David Kline, Vice President for Technology and Chief Information Officer at Viacom David Kline is senior vice president of technology and chief information officer for Viacom Inc., which owns high profile media properties such as Paramount Pictures and Viacom Media Networks.
