Connecting the world’s brightest minds together

1 The Innovator Within

About TED TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four- day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, for free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala, Isabel Allende, and former U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Long Beach, Calif., along with the TEDActive simulcast in Palm Springs. The annual TEDGlobal conference is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.

TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily, the recently launched TED-Ed platform for students and educators, the Open Translation Project—which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide—and TEDBooks, short e-books by speakers that elaborate on a single idea originally presented on TED's stage. In addition, TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, which helps world-changing innovators from around the globe become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities. To learn more about TED, visit ted.com.

About TEDx In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where “x” signifies an independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

About TEDxLIU In the spirit of inspiration and innovations worth spreading, TEDxLIU is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience on Long Island, N.Y. TEDxLIU is organized by a team of LIU faculty, staff, and students. Live presentations and performances are provided to spark deep discussion and connection in the community. Through live presentations using multimedia, TEDxLIU hopes to connect the world’s brightest minds in various disciplines together to change attitudes, lives, and, ultimately, the world.

Speakers

Richard Keeling, Principal and Senior Executive Consultant of Keeling & Associates, LLC

Richard P. Keeling, M.D., leads Keeling & Associates, LLC (K&A), a comprehensive higher education consulting practice. K&A’s mission is to improve outcomes in higher education by creating change for learning. At the heart of his leadership of K&A are the belief and commitment that learning should be transformative and at the core of the mission of colleges and universities, and that sound processes of institutional renewal can enable campuses to improve learning in its broadest sense. Dr. Keeling serves on the Board of Directors of the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education and has been president of four professional organizations in higher education. He has edited three sequential publications that focus on improving learning: Learning Reconsidered, Learning Reconsidered II, and Assessment Reconsidered. Dr. Keeling and Dr. Richard Hersh recently published We’re Losing Our Minds: Rethinking American Higher Education (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012), a book argues for substantial change in the culture of higher education to support higher quality and better value in undergraduate education in the United States. Before creating K&A, Dr. Keeling was a tenured faculty member and a senior student affairs administrator at the University of Virginia and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. For more than 20 years, Dr. Keeling has taught and practiced medicine, directed comprehensive health programs and services, developed collaborative programs in undergraduate education with academic departments and faculty, and explored innovative, cross-institutional approaches to advance student learning.

Talk: The Once and Future Entrepreneur: Discovery, Innovation, and the Prepared Mind

Summary: Higher education graduates students, but does it prepare their minds for innovation? “New” ideas always spring from foundations laid earlier; many “innovations” are adaptations, customizations, or even renewals of their predecessors—which are often unrecognized and frequently unacknowledged. Today’s effusive rhetoric (such as “disruptive”) usually overstates both novelty and significance; early claims are seldom matched by later outcomes. More and better creations will come from entrepreneurs whose minds are prepared for discovery and whose attitudes and motivation are shaped with respect for other innovators—past, present, and future. Higher education should be an accessible warehouse of intellectual and creative resources and talents that help future entrepreneurs leverage their curiosity and imagination. We need colleges and universities that prepare minds for discovery and innovation. True higher learning is the crucible of innovation; it should be the focus of every institution of higher education.

Talk: The Surprisingly Simple Question That Sparks Innovation

Summary: What can spark unique ideas that completely change the way things are normally done? How do some people come up with fresh, original, and sometimes unheard of solutions to problems that most people say can’t be fixed? Why is it that some constantly get better while others remain the same? And how do some people keep trying, failure after failure, with the odds against them? If you have ever wanted to become more innovative, you don't have to wait for genius to strike; you can create it by focusing on one question. One question that can help drive you when you feel defeated. This one question will help you solve problems in life that others would have given up on. This one question will help you come up with solutions when others see no way. Solving problems stems from not having the right answer at first, but from asking the right question.

Talk: Keep Walking—How to Achieve Your Goals or Crossing the Street in Saigon: A Metaphor for the Young Entrepreneur

Summary: In bustling and hectic Saigon, Vietnam, the act of crossing the street is a daunting task. One must dodge lanes of cars, motorbikes, bicycles, rickshaws, and myriad other obstacles to simply reach the other side of the road. Likewise, the entrepreneurial arena is filled with tasks which, when first confronted, appear “impossible” to tackle. In this talk, Vicente will explore the challenges facing entrepreneurs in today’s digital society, by examining the following subjects: how to find an “opening,” while maintaining stability and achieving follow through; retaining one’s passion; and keeping the end goal in sight. She will discuss how to learn from disappointments and build successes by calling on examples from her multi-hyphenate career as a film producer, a founder of multiple companies, and the leader of a media non-profit organization and cross-platform media center.

7 The Innovator Within Speakers

William Brennan, Co-Founder, SchoolLeadership20.com

Dr. William Brennan is the lead innovator at Farmingdale Public Schools and co-founder of School Leadership 2.0—A Global Knowledge Network for School Leaders. Upon graduating from Fordham University, Brennan continues to teach, write, consult, and speak on the power of network technologies and how it will transform individuals and organizations that are open to embrace it. He has emerged as a thought leader and presenter, assisting other organizations to embrace and effectively build next- generation learning organizations.

In his talks, Brennan shows how networks are changing the rules of human potential and transforming organizations. He thinks deeply about the new possibilities and takes an imaginative look at our digital, connected, and collaborative world. Brennan champions a radical way of rethinking our organizations to cultivate human capital while acknowledging multiple sources of leadership and untapped resources.

Talk: Why Schools Must Focus On Un-Learning

Summary: The 21st century will mark the greatest change we have yet to see in education. The digital revolution has fueled a renaissance in learning, changing the rules on human potential and potentially serving as the missing link in building digital age learning organizations. Conventional wisdom is strictly about learning; Brennan argues scalable “un-learning” will be the key to helping our most inadequate institutions. He will highlight the idea that through social media, collaboration, and other online/offline learning community endeavors, we now possess the capability to “draft” off each other's ideas and perspectives. In order to develop these capacities, we must embrace a new set of principles for the 21st century. The time has come to reinvent learning, reinvent education, and reinvent our organizations.

8 The Innovator Within Speakers

Rakesh Bhargava, Manager of General Partner, MangoTree Real Estate Holdings L.P.

Rakesh Bhargava, a serial entrepreneur, funded or founded eight different businesses in the United States and India. Currently, he manages a distressed property fund based on Long Island, N.Y., which has grown approximately 1,400 percent in the last four years. The fund has delivered up to 15 percent net return in 2012 and 2013, and its performance is audited by WeiserMazars.

Bhargava’s first venture was a technology company that was sold to American Express in 1999. He then served as a managing director with American Express Tax and Business Services. In addition, Bhargava founded two hotels and acquired a nursing home in United States, as well as helped to build an Apollo-managed super-specialty hospital that has grown to four hospitals today in Central India and two windmills in South India. He also initiated an experiential learning organization for CEOs in India.

Bhargava’s first master’s degree is in economics with a gold medal. He also worked as manager of Union Bank of India, MG Road, Indore branch. In 1978, he was awarded Rotary Foundation International Graduate Fellowship from the state of Gujarat, MP and Chhattisgarh. Bhargava completed his M.B.A. in finance in 1981 on the dean’s list from Adelphi University. He taught finance as adjunct professor for two years at Adelphi. He has also served as CFO for several companies.

Talk: What I Didn’t Learn in School … Lessons from a Serial Entrepreneur

Summary: Growing up in the closed economy of India in the 1960s, Bhargava was taught that memorized education was the sole means to success. Obtaining a good- paying job was the ultimate goal of this educational model, where critical thinking and decision-making skills were not a part of the curriculum. Graduating at the top of his master’s class only offered him the keys to the coveted job when unemployment was sky high; it did not teach him how to be successful in life let alone the job on hand. Bhargava will share how his entrepreneurial spirit allowed him to start and maintain eight different businesses successfully. He will illustrate three major principles that have catapulted his personal and professional growth. Inspirational stories and valuable lessons learned from his experiences will be shared. The audience will walk away with renewed confidence and strategies to spark their own journey that they can be proud of.
