Although the path of their education and career went in different direc- tions, after the outbreak of World War II they undertook many daring and dangerous activities to save their homeland. I write about people I met personally, as an adolescent, after the war. They were talented, courageous, selfless, and overly patriotic women. My interest in the fate of the pre-war generation incited me to devote my whole refu- gee life to researching the history of my homeland, to which I never returned. Ojciec uczestniczył w powstaniu styczniowym. Wychowywana była wspólnie z rodzeństwem w tradycji niepodległościowej. W 1913 r. ukończyła Gimnazjum Żeńskie Kuzienkowej w Warszawie, a następnie kursy buchalteryjne Zgromadzenia Kupców m. st. Warszawy. W latach 1913- 1915 brała udział w tajnym skautingu jako plutonowa IV Drużyny im. Emilii Plater oraz w pracach Konfederacji Polskiej i Polskiego Komitetu Pomocy Sanitarnej. W sierpniu 1915 r. uczestniczyła w akcji ekwipowania Batalionu Warszawskiego. Wobec zakazu przyjmowania kobiet do Legionów Polskich zgłosiła się w dniu 8 lutego 1916 r. do służby jako mężczyzna pod nazwiskiem Kazimierz Żuchowicz. Została przydzielona do Kompanii Uzupełniającej Legionów Polskich w Lublinie, a w dniu 19 marca tego roku do Magazynu 1 Pułku Artylerii. Od 7 maja do 25 sierpnia 1916 r. służyła jako kanonier w II Baterii Haubic 1 Pułku Artylerii I Brygady Legionów Polskich Brała udział w walkach nad Styrem i Stochodem. Od 1 września 1916 r.

Probably not many . In 1914, it was a small Mazovian town close to the southern border of East Prussia . Depending on the point of view, whether Russian or German, Przasnysz was situated on one of the main roads leading to East Prussia or, going in the opposite direction, to Warsaw . In November and December 1914, and again in February and July of the following year, hundreds of thousands of Russian and German soldiers fought three great battles in Przasnysz . In the July 1915 engagement, the Germans suffered 16,000 killed or wounded, while the Russian losses amounted to nearly 40,000 men . The total number of dead, wounded, and missing is unknown, but it certainly far exceeded 100,000 . Why is it, then, that so few people have heard of Przasnysz? There are three answers to this question, and each has contributed to the genesis of this book . Contrary to what a Russian or an inhabitant of Central and Southern-Eastern Europe might think, it is only to the east and south-east of Germany that the First World War has been all but forgotten .

    Maciej Żuczkowski Służba Kobiet w strukturach wojskowych Polskiego Państwa Podziemnego na przy- kładzie Dowództwa Głównego Służby Zwycięstwu Polski i Komendy Głównej Związku Walki Zbrojnej – Armii Krajowej W gronie ponad 26 tys. osób odznaczonych najwyższym polskim odznaczeniem wojskowym – Orderem Wojennym Virtuti Militari – jest tylko 319 kobiet, czyli nie- wiele ponad 1,2 proc.1 Dowodzi to, że zaangażowanie polskich kobiet w walkę o odzy- skanie niepodległości, a potem w jej obronę jest zdecydowanie niedoceniane. Również w społecznym przekonaniu, kobieta żegnała wyruszających do walki o narodową sprawę męża i syna, sama jednak w niej nie uczestniczyła. Do końca XIX w.2 bezpośredni udział w walce wzięły bardzo nieliczne Polki3, a wśród nich do legendy przeszła Emilia Plater4. Sytuacja zmieniła się w XX w. Już w rewolucji z lat 1905–1907 uczestniczyło wiele kobiet blisko współpracujących z Organizacją Bojową Polskiej Partii Socjalistycznej5, one też przeprowadziły jedną z jej najbardziej znanych akcji – zamach na generał-gu- bernatora warszawskiego Gieorgija Skałona6. Jednak dopiero w czasie I wojny świato- wej oraz w bezpośrednio po niej następujących walkach w obronie właśnie odzyskanej 1 Wszystkie zostały odznaczone Orderem Virtuti Militari V klasy (E.     DOI 10.15290/cnisk.2016.01.01.03 DR BARBARA DRAPIKOWSKA Akademia Obrony Narodowej Kobiety w polskiej armii – ujęcie historyczne Streszczenie Artykuł został poświęcony problematyce militarnej partycypacji ko- biet w siłach zbrojnych w perspektywie historycznej. W pierwszej części przedstawiono pokrótce sylwetki kobiet biorących udział w powstaniach narodowych (Powstanie Kościuszkowskie – 1794, Powstanie Listopado- we – 1831, Powstanie Styczniowe – 1863). Uwagę skupiono zarówno na kobietach biorących udział w walce, a także świadczących usługi me- dyczne i logistyczne. W drugiej części zaprezentowano zaangażowanie kobiet w działania zbrojne w czasie I wojny światowej, kiedy to powstały pierwsze regularne formacje kobiece. Następnie przedstawiono udział kobiet w czynie zbrojnym w II wojnie światowej, zarówno na frontach zewnętrznych, jak i w kraju. W końcowej części sformułowano ogólne wnioski dotyczące służby wojskowej kobiet w historii Polski.
