MY GIRL RED GIVES TEXAS NEW TURF CHUTE WILL GIVE SANTA ANITA EXTRA SPRINT OPTIONS THE GREEN LIGHT by T. D. Thornton has broken ground on a new turf chute adjacent to the main dirt track's seven-furlong chute that will allow sprints up to 6 1/2 furlongs to be conducted on the grass oval. The new configuration won't be ready in time for the upcoming meet that commences Sept. 19. But once the extension is completed, track management is going to consider reopening the currently closed 6 1/2-furlong downhill turf course for select usage. Aidan Butler, the chief strategy officer and executive director of California racing operations for The Stronach Group (TSG), which owns Santa Anita, detailed the plans during Thursday's California Board tele-meeting. ASo I laid out some criteria about the My Girl Red=s dam, a beautiful, stakes-winning mare, colicked kind of mares we needed: mares that were nine years or after she had her Texas Red foal. We lost her, had to get a nurse younger; that had made over $100,000, or were stakes-placed; mare. Another mare I bought for the first crop, she=d won the with one or two commercial foals on the ground; and in foal to a Ontario Debutante Stakes as a 2-year-old, we lost her too, along commercial sire. I hoped to keep in a range between $15,000 with her foal. Then there the first-crop Texas Red foal out of the most expensive mare I ever bought. It was out on the training track, a windy day, something spooked the horse, it flipped, fractured its skull. And to cap it all, earlier this year, we lost a full-sister to My Girl Red. When all that happens, it doesn=t matter how good your plan is. It kind of throws everything out the window.@ But that doesn=t mean you throw up your hands and give up. Brehm believed that the same principles that have served him well in business life could be validly extended even to the volatile fortunes of the horse industry. He knew that Texas Red was in the best of hands, with the McLean family at Crestwood Farm; but he also knew, with the partnership (also comprising Wayne Detmar, Lee Michaels and Dr. Gene Voss) having retained a 75% stake in Texas Red, that a game plan was needed. Forsaking the warmth of Texas, Brehm shivered around the barns at the 2017 January Sale to find suitable Erich Brehm (center) with Erich Brehm Jr. and wife Janet dates for the rookie. Until the 2018 autumn meet, Santa Anita had never carded turf sprints that started on the back straight. FANDUEL NAMED TITLE SPONSOR OF BREEDERS' CUP MILE FanDuel, America's premier gaming destination, will become the title sponsor of the $2-million GI Breeders' Cup Mile at this year's Breeders' Cup World Championships. In addition, two of FanDuel Group's major charity partners will be incorporated into its naming rights for this year's event--the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile presented by PDJF and the GI TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. The Breeders' Cup, one of Thoroughbred racing's most prestigious international events, consisting of 14 races and purses and awards totaling $35 million, is scheduled to be held Nov. 6-7 at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky. For several years, FanDuel subsidiary TVG, America's Horse Racing network, has partnered with the Jockeys' Guild's Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF), on initiatives including an annual telethon, and with the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, to raise awareness and funding for both organizations. ADJUSTMENT TO DEAUVILLE SELECT DATES EASY FOR LOVE IN THE After announcing on Wednesday that its Deauville Select Sale YORKSHIRE OAKS would be moved forward a little more than two weeks to accommodate the UK government=s quarantine requirement for visitors from France, Arqana made another minor adjustment to those dates on Thursday. The sale will now be staged on Sept. 9 to 11 to avoid a clash with the Tattersalls Ascot yearling sale. "With so many constraints coming into play and such a restricted time period to stage all American and European yearling sales, it is virtually impossible to please everyone and sales clashes are almost inevitable,@ said Arqana Chief Executive Officer Eric Hoyeau. AHowever, Arqana and Tattersalls have agreed that cooperation is paramount amid the current crisis and that we should do our utmost to make attendance at our sales compatible for vendors and buyers alike."

Easy For Love In The Yorkshire Oaks cont. from p1 AThe ground=s a bit dead and it was a worry for her, as when I rode her in the Debutante last year I thought it was a bit slow for her but she=s obviously thrived and got stronger. She=s been exceptional every start and we=ll see how she is over the next six weeks.@ Aidan O'Brien was full of praise afterwards. "She was always very exciting--I don't know if we've ever had as an exciting a filly at this stage. I can't name one that has been as exciting as her at this stage ever," he said. "When you're training them and they're your own, you don't ever want to get carried away, but it's her movement and her pace and her action and her attitude--that's the makings of those great horses and she seems to have all that. She has looked very special from the minute she ran in the Guineas. We thought she was a very good filly last year, but we thought she'd be a middle-distance filly, so when she did that in the Guineas we weren't sure what would happen in the Oaks. But when she went up in trip she was very happy and for her to do that today, after having a break since the Oaks, was very good. We were nervous about today because of the ground, but know now we could run on good to soft. We couldn't be happier with what she's done. We were delighted with today and if she comes out of today well and goes on to the Arc, we'd be looking forward to it." "To be honest I don=t think she would have been entered under normal circumstances. I was looking for the big black-type and once you=ve got it you can be a bit more creative, especially with a filly. This was a huge day for Miss Rausing. I=ve been lucky enough to train the dam Alwilda and the granddam Albanova, as well as Albanova=s sister Alborada." According to the Post, Prescott is looking at either Doncaster=s G2 Park Hill S. or a Group 2 for fillies over a mile and a half at Baden-Baden. "Miss Rausing is marvellous when it comes to keeping fillies and mares going, and Alwilda and Albanova were both five when they won their most important races,@ he said. Coolmore Australia Principal Tom Magnier said the response COOLMORE CALLS ON since the virtual stallion parade was released on Wednesday evening had been extremely encouraging. GLOBAL CONNECTIONS "The feedback on our first ever virtual parade has been overwhelmingly positive from all corners of the globe. I have received messages from clients and friends in Europe, Asia, America and throughout Australia and New Zealand and they were all incredibly complimentary," Magnier said. "We are very proud of the amazing stallion roster that we have developed here over many years and we really enjoyed putting this piece together." In times of crisis comes innovation and Magnier felt his team had responded to the challenge of presenting their stallions ahead of the new season in a brilliant manner. "We have all been met with many challenges in recent times, but the show must go on, and it has been wonderful to see the Australian industry adapt and evolve in such times," he said. "The sales went online with resounding success so we didn=t hesitate in putting together a virtual stallion parade of the highest quality to bring our stallions to the people in the comfort of their own homes. John Magnier spoke during the Coolmore Australia virtual stallion parade | Coolmore Stud "We were delighted with the way it all came together. The farm, the grounds and most importantly the stallions looked amazing and it is a credit to all the staff at Coolmore for making by Bren O'Brien this possible." In extraordinary times, Coolmore Australia called upon some While a physical stallion parade is usually limited to speaking of the extraordinary talents of world racing to launch its virtual to the people actually on the ground at the time, Coolmore was stallion parade this week and the feedback to the concept has able utilise its global contacts to bring together some incredible been overwhelmingly positive. talent to launch its 16-strong roster for 2020. The hour-long video, available on the Coolmore website as well as through various social media platforms, is narrated by long-time Coolmore bloodstock advisor James Bester, who speaks to the world industry leaders about the prospects of stallions such as US Triple Crown winners Justify (USA) and American Pharoah (USA) as well as new additions Yes Yes Yes, Calyx (GB) and Magna Grecia (Ire).

"It's an opportunity really for the serious breeders to avail of him while he is there," John Magnier said. "For me, he's a no brainer at this time and he has been a nap of all the stallions that we have ever put to stud. He fulfils all the criteria that we look for on an international basis, which is where we see that game going." The virtual stallion parade also featured an interview with Justify's trainer Bob Baffert, who gave insight into how he had developed into a champion racehorse.

O'Brien hails the natural, Magna Grecia Aidan O'Brien, the world's leading trainer, who has had so much success from his Ballydoyle operation, spoke about Magna Grecia, the son of Invincible Spirit (Ire), who won the G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy S. at two and the G1 2000 Guineas at three. "I suppose he was one of those unusual horses. His shape and his length and his scope and his body never changed much when we trained him. He came in looking like that and as we trained him he never lost much weight," he said. "He was a natural from day one and found everything very easy to him." Magna Grecia debuts in Australia at $22,000 (inc GST).

Waller says Yes Coolmore's other addition in 2020 is of course Yes Yes Yes, the son of Rubick, who defeated some of the world's best sprinters to win The Everest last year. His trainer Chris Waller provided some insight into the level of talent Yes Yes Yes possessed. "When you are talking about running in an Everest, you need to display to the Everest slot holders that you are choosing the right horse. You need to wait for as long as you can to make sure that that horse is right," he said. "We had to be convinced that we had the right horse to convince the slot holders that Yes Yes Yes is the horse, not to just run in the race, but win the race. The decision was made and the rest is history." While that was to prove his final run, with Yes Yes Yes retired to stud, where he will stand at $38,500 (inc GST), after suffering an autumn setback, Waller believes he would have been the benchmark Australian sprinter of the season. "Based on Nature Strip's rating and how he became the highest rated sprinter in the world this year, you would have had to say that Yes Yes Yes, in beating him in The Everest would have been a pretty good chance wherever he went around the world," Waller said. The stallion parade featuring detailed coverage of all 16 of Coolmore Australia's roster and is available here.
