    The War of Independence in County Kilkenny: Conflict, Politics and People Eoin Swithin Walsh B.A. University College Dublin College of Arts and Celtic Studies This dissertation is submitted in part fulfilment of the Master of Arts in History July 2015 Head of School: Dr Tadhg Ó hAnnracháin Supervisor of Research: Professor Diarmaid Ferriter P a g e | 2 Abstract The array of publications relating to the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921) has, generally speaking, neglected the contributions of less active counties. As a consequence, the histories of these counties regarding this important period have sometimes been forgotten. With the recent introduction of new source material, it is now an opportune time to explore the contributions of the less active counties, to present a more layered view of this important period of Irish history. County Kilkenny is one such example of these overlooked counties, a circumstance this dissertation seeks to rectify. To gain a sense of the contemporary perspective, the first two decades of the twentieth century in Kilkenny will be investigated. Significant events that occurred in the county during the period, including the Royal Visit of 1904 and the 1917 Kilkenny City By-Election, will be examined. Kilkenny’s IRA Military campaign during the War of Independence will be inspected in detail, highlighting the major confrontations with Crown Forces, while also appraising the corresponding successes and failures throughout the county. The Kilkenny Republican efforts to instigate a ‘counter-state’ to subvert British Government authority will be analysed. In the political sphere, this will focus on the role of Local Government, while the administration of the Republican Courts and the Republican Police Force will also be examined.

  • Pat Walsh in the Early Days of the GAA Football Was
    Pat Walsh In the early days of the GAA football was the dominant sport in Dunnamaggin parish just as it was in most of county Kilkenny. The first hurling game played hereabouts was the county final of 1890 which was hosted by Kells Football Club. When Callan played Raheen in Kilmoganny in February 1897 the Journal reporter described it as "a new game at Kilmoganny". As an eleven year old Pat Walsh probably went to see the match. Born on 4 May 1887, Pat was the son of Matthew Walsh who hailed originally from Newmarket and Mary O'Neill the daughter of a local publican. He attended Baurscoob school, Kells N.S. and Callan C.B.S. He is described in his obituary as the founder of Dunnamaggin hurling club. Pat played hurling and football with the Glory Rovers and most likely played on the first hurling team that represented Dunnamaggin. He would have been twenty-three years of age in June 1910 when Dunnamaggin hosted a tournament which included two hurling matches - a first round junior hurling championship game between Piltown and James Stephens, and a friendly hurling match between Dunnamaggin and Seven Houses. The hurling match was probably in preparation for Dunnamaggin's first round junior hurling championship game against Lodgepark (Freshford) in Kilkenny fixed for 26 June. There is no record of how Dunnamaggin fared in this game. Pat is said to have lead out the hurling team that played Ahenure in Dunnamaggin on Gaelic Sunday 1918 in protest against the policy of the British government towards the GAA.

    The Place-Names of County Kilkenny Acknowledgement The Kilkenny Archaeological Society is grateful to Mrs Sheila O ’Kelly for permission to re-issue this book. Notice On mature reflection the Commitee of the Society has decided to change the title of Owen O ’Kelly’s book from A History of County Kilkenny to The Place-Names of the County of Kilkenny. The new title is thought more exactly to describe the book. An alphabetical index has been added. Within the new material, Owen O ’Kelly’s book is reproduced complete and unaltered. The map on the cover (also reproduced inside) is made from a Grand Jury map. The Grand Juries were the forerunners of the County Councils. They commissioned maps which are now extremely rare. The Grand Jury maps predate the first edition of the Ordnance Survey maps and are of great interest because of the different spellings of place names. Thus they can be used to locate changes that have occurred.     Callan C.B.S. - The Dunnamaggin Connection From the time Rev. Robert O'Keeffe from Dunnamaggin laid the foundation stone for Callan C.B.S. in 1868, players from the parish had contributed enormously to the success of hurling at the college. In the early years success was scarce this despite producing both fine football and hurling teams. The breakthrough nearly came in the 1940's with Davie Walsh as their most prominent player, but they failed to jump the final hurdle. Inspired on by centenary year and the arrival of Mick McHugh, the Rice Cup, the most prestigious trophy in CBS hurling was won in 1968 with Pat Butler, Kells, Richard Mackey, Rogerstown, Johnny Nolan, Ballytobin, and James Hughes, Dunnamaggin, to the fore. This was a major breakthrough for the school and they went on to capture the U-17 Leinster Kyne Cup the same year. Pat Butler, Kells, and Willie Hughes, Dunnamaggin, were members of this team. In 1971 the earlier under age success was followed by winning the Senior Leinster Colleges "B" title against an Ogie Moran led Gormanstown team. As there was no All-Ireland "B " championship at the time Callan C.B.S. progressed into the semi-final of the "A" championship where they came up against the mighty St. Kieran's in the semi-final. The Callan boys put up a brave show but were beaten in the end. Pat Butler, Kells, Jimmy Dunne, Kells, John Nolan, Ballytobin, James Hughes, Dunnamaggin, and Richie Mackey, Rogerstown, were members of this team. The 1972 team again captured the Leinster Colleges "B" Leinster Final with the same players on board.

THOMAS TREACY, 30. Dean Street. Ki1keny, Brigade O/C Kilkenny Brigade I.R.A. In August 1951 I prepared a statement for the Bureau of Military History of the history of the Irish Volunteers in Kilkenny from the time of their formation in March l9l4 up to and immediately after the time of the Rising in April 1916. In this present statement I propose to give, as far as I can now recollect, the story of the Volunteer movement in Kilkenny City and County from the period following the Rising to the time of my last arrest and internment in November 1920, together with my experiences as Vice Commandant and Acting Commandant of the prisoners in Ballykinlar Internment Camp during the year 1921. As mentioned in my previous statement (l9l4-l9l6) there were approximately 120 members of the Irish Volunteers in the City and County of Kilkenny in 1916. Thirty-one of these, including myself, were arrested immediately after the Rising and interned in jails and internment camps in England. All these prisoners were released by August of 1916. I don't know the number of members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood that were in Kilkenny City and County at that time as I was not a member of that organisation, but I would say that after deducting the number of I.R.B.

  • The Kells Pipers Band
    The Kells Pipers Band The Kells Pipers Band which will always be remembered for having played in Croke Park on All-Ireland days in the early 1930s first made their appearance on the Gaelic fields in 1915. The formation of the band was a direct result of the formation of a corps of the Irish Volunteers in Kells in June 1914. Kells' Volunteers needed a band of their own, and at a meeting held in Kells attended by John Power (Kells' creamery manager), Ned O'Keeffe, Kilree, Dick Gorey of Kells, Harry Meighan, the great marathon runner and Pat Fleming of Kilree, it was decided to form a pipers' band. Money was raised through subscriptions and concerts, including "a grand concert and variety entertainment" held in Kells in April 1915 "in aid of the newly formed Pipers' Band". A "Band Hall" was given by John Robinson and practice began. The committee consisted of Ned O'Keeffe as chairman, Joe Walsh, Haggard, as vice-chairman, Harry Meighan as secretary, and John Power as treasurer. Two men from Lady Desert's band in Kilkenny were hired to teach them how to play the instruments, Jimmy Phelan, the first bandmaster, who came from Patrick Street in Kilkenny, and "Shovel" Morrissey a drummer. Lady Desart gave them some pipes, drums, kilts, brooches and kilt pins. Since it was a Volunteer band most of its early appearances were related to the activity of the Kells Volunteers. It led route marches to the neighbouring villages of Stoneyford, Newtown and Seven Houses. It also joined bands from Kilmoganny, Croan and Callan at a great demonstration held in Seven Houses to protest against the actions of Major Handford and his agent against seven of his Burnchurch tenants.

    Parish Boundaries Parish boundaries are often a source of animated discussion in GAA circles, particularly in county Kilkenny where the parish rule operates. From the beginning the parish was an important element in the GAA. It was the aim of the founding fathers of the GAA to have a GAA club in every parish in Ireland. But at the beginning boundaries do not seem to have been so important. Kells, the first team in this parish, was a Dunnamaggin-Danesfort combination. The rule initially does not seem to have been strictly enforced, but the following year Kells lost the second round on an objection based on the parish rule. The rule was later modified and for many years abandoned altogether. In the wake of Carrickshock's four-in-a-row a three-parish rule came into existence and lasted for three years, 1944-46. It was reinstated again in December 1952 after an impassioned plea from Peadar Laffan at the county convention. The following year the parish rule as it presently exists was adopted. The boundaries of the Catholic parishes were the accepted parish boundaries. It is perhaps little realised that parish boundaries are often of very ancient vintage. The present parish structure in Kilkenny is the product of three periods - the medieval period when what are known as the civil parishes were set up, the 17th century when a post-reformation reorganization of the parish structure took place and the nineteenth century when many parishes were divided. The medieval parish structure was set up by the Normans in the late twelfth or early thirteenth centuries, and some of these boundaries may even have reflected the ancient tuath boundaries.
