Representatives from four counties (Offaly, Kerry, Tipperary and Galway) attended the meeting. In the same year the Ladies Gaelic Football Association organised the inaugural All-Ireland Senior Ladies' Football Championship which Tipperary won by beating Offaly 2-3 to 2-2 in Durrow, County Laois. The winning team is now presented with the Brendan Martin Cup. The cup is named after a native of Tullamore, County Offaly, who organised Ladies' Gaelic football games in the early 1970s and became one of the first treasurers of the newly founded Ladies' Gaelic Football Association. The LGFA was officially recognised by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1982. Ladies Gaelic Football did not immediately kick off in Kilkenny, although there was a senior county final played in 1975 where Danesfort beat St. Brigid’s by 2-1 to 0-3. There was also a junior championship final that year where neighbours Muckalee beat Coon 3-0 to 1-1. Locally, there was a team in neighbouring Tullahought in the late 1970’s that played games mainly with teams from neighbouring Tipperary and Waterford. Railyard, the nucleus of Gaelic Football in Kilkenny had a ladies’ team and by the turn of the millennium and they were very competitive but not in Kilkenny. In 2003, The Kilkenny County Board came in to existence formally and the initial executive officers were all from the Railyard club. Breda Roche (Chairperson), Ann Dowd, (Secretary), Ann Marie Murphy (Treasurer) and Noelle Curran (PRO). From 2003, Kilkenny ladies football slowly gained momentum. By 2007, the county adult team was competing in the All-Ireland Junior Final in Croke Park where they beat London to reach a pinnacle. In the intervening years, at adult level it has been a struggle, including not been able to field teams at adult level. There are many factors, one in particular, which also affects the men’s game in Kilkenny, is convincing players there is more than one way to where the black and amber at a high level. Not all will get to wear it at the highest level in Camogie and Hurling The primary schools’ competition was one of the major strengths of Ladies Football in Kilkenny even going back into the early 90’s. It was on the back of success at this level for Piltown, that Sheila Norris led the drive in 2010 to setup a ladies’ football club for the first time in Piltown. Helped in no small way by Noelle Curran the county PRO and goalkeeper of the victorious Kilkenny All-Ireland winning team in 2007 as well as locals Siobhan McCarthy, Fran McGrath and Seamus Norris. The All-Ireland win had put Ladies Gaelic Football on the Kilkenny radar. This book tells the story of the first ten years of Piltown Ladies Gaelic Football Club. There have been a lot of ups and downs along the way. Recording history as it times goes by is in invaluable in the future so that people can understand where and how they got there. Future successes will be appreciated in that they did not happen overnight. This book is electronic and not for sale, but If you do enjoy reading it please voluntarily donate what you think the value is, to Piltown Ladies Gaelic Football Club (via PayPal), so that the Club can continue to function into the second decade. The Author would like to thank all who contributed information, stories and photographs over the years. Your foresight and passion to record history has made this book possible. It was also a huge honour that, as current Chairperson, I was asked to write the foreword. Taking aside the fact that we continue to vie with the more “main stream” sports in the area, nestled away in the almost forgotten corner of South Kilkenny, we are competing, representing and participating at many levels within Kilkenny football and with other Kilkenny clubs. Our little club has had varied success over the years and each season throws up its own challenges. Every week we train from Under-12s right up to Aine Knox our Gaelic4Mothers&Others (non-competitive ladies) with over 70 active members. 2020 has already thrown up its fair share of challenges and the challenges we face to get everyone back playing safely will stretch our dedicated team even further. The club could not exist without the trojan efforts of coaches and club executives. I probably could always have been described as “sporty”. I love sport. I love watching sport, listening to sport, reading about sport, coaching sport and playing sport (old age is beginning to affect the latter). Sport is social, good for the mental and physical health and sport can mean different things to different people. That is why I am proud to help facilitate our sessions every week and let our members get what they need from our sport. I would also like to this opportunity to thank Piltown GAA who have allowed us to use their fine facilities and have been the envy of many a visiting side over the years. I simply could not sign off without acknowledging the work that Seamus has undertaken
