The Ladies Gaelic Football Association was founded on the 18th July 1974 at a meeting held at Hayes Hotel in Thurles, County Tipperary, almost ninety years after the Gaelic Athletic Association was founded in the same hotel. Representatives from four counties (Offaly, Kerry, Tipperary and ) attended the meeting. In the same year the Ladies Gaelic Football Association organised the inaugural All-Ireland Senior Ladies' Football Championship which Tipperary won by beating Offaly 2-3 to 2-2 in Durrow, County Laois. The winning team is now presented with the Brendan Martin Cup. The cup is named after a native of Tullamore, County Offaly, who organised Ladies' Gaelic football games in the early 1970s and became one of the first treasurers of the newly founded Ladies' Gaelic Football Association. The LGFA was officially recognised by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1982.

Ladies Gaelic Football did not immediately kick off in , although there was a senior county final played in 1975 where Danesfort beat St. Brigid’s by 2-1 to 0-3. There was also a junior championship final that year where neighbours Muckalee beat Coon 3-0 to 1-1. Locally, there was a team in neighbouring in the late 1970’s that played games mainly with teams from neighbouring Tipperary and . Railyard, the nucleus of Gaelic Football in Kilkenny had a ladies’ team and by the turn of the millennium and they were very competitive but not in Kilkenny. In 2003, The Kilkenny County Board came in to existence formally and the initial executive officers were all from the Railyard club. Breda Roche (Chairperson), Ann Dowd, (Secretary), Ann Marie Murphy (Treasurer) and Noelle Curran (PRO). From 2003, Kilkenny ladies football slowly gained momentum. By 2007, the county adult team was competing in the All-Ireland Junior Final in Croke Park where they beat London to reach a pinnacle. In the intervening years, at adult level it has been a struggle, including not been able to field teams at adult level. There are many factors, one in particular, which also affects the men’s game in Kilkenny, is convincing players there is more than one way to where the black and amber at a high level. Not all will get to wear it at the highest level in and

The primary schools’ competition was one of the major strengths of Ladies Football in Kilkenny even going back into the early 90’s. It was on the back of success at this level for Piltown, that Sheila Norris led the drive in 2010 to setup a ladies’ football club for the first time in Piltown. Helped in no small way by Noelle Curran the county PRO and goalkeeper of the victorious Kilkenny All-Ireland winning team in 2007 as well as locals Siobhan McCarthy, Fran McGrath and Seamus Norris. The All-Ireland win had put Ladies Gaelic Football on the Kilkenny radar. This book tells the story of the first ten years of Piltown Ladies Gaelic Football Club. There have been a lot of ups and downs along the way. Recording history as it times goes by is in invaluable in the future so that people can understand where and how they got there. Future successes will be appreciated in that they did not happen overnight.

This book is electronic and not for sale, but If you do enjoy reading it please voluntarily donate what you think the value is, to Piltown Ladies Gaelic Football Club (via PayPal), so that the Club can continue to function into the second decade.

The Author would like to thank all who contributed information, stories and photographs over the years. Your foresight and passion to record history has made this book possible. Go raibh míle maith agat.

FOREWORD When Seamus Norris first proposed the idea of a book to recognise 10 years for Ladies Gaelic Football in Piltown, we all took a moment to appreciate the achievement. It was also a huge honour that, as current Chairperson, I was asked to write the foreword. Taking aside the fact that we continue to vie with the more “main stream” in the area, nestled away in the almost forgotten corner of South Kilkenny, we are competing, representing and participating at many levels within Kilkenny football and with other Kilkenny clubs. Our little club has had varied success over the years and each season throws up its own challenges. Every week we train from Under-12s right up to Aine Knox our Gaelic4Mothers&Others (non-competitive ladies) with over 70 active members.

2020 has already thrown up its fair share of challenges and the challenges we face to get everyone back playing safely will stretch our dedicated team even further. The club could not exist without the trojan efforts of coaches and club executives. I probably could always have been described as “sporty”. I love . I love watching sport, listening to sport, reading about sport, coaching sport and playing sport (old age is beginning to affect the latter). Sport is social, good for the mental and physical health and sport can mean different things to different people. That is why I am proud to help facilitate our sessions every week and let our members get what they need from our sport. I would also like to this opportunity to thank Piltown GAA who have allowed us to use their fine facilities and have been the envy of many a visiting side over the years.

I simply could not sign off without acknowledging the work that Seamus has undertaken (or been lumbered with!) since the formation of the club in 2010. While I am only involved since 2012, Seamus has been there since almost day one and is still very much involved with the running of the club both in front and behind the scenes. While, at the moment, he is blessed amongst women, I know the other coaches and officers would also like to publicly thank Seamus for all he has done, and continues to do, for Piltown Ladies Gaelic Football. I hope all those involved (past and present) will enjoy looking back and recalling the many happy memories they have had, playing football with Piltown. FOUNDER It gives me great pleasure to congratulate everyone who has been involved in Piltown Ladies Gaelic Football Club over the past decade. You have contributed to a wonderful success story. It is a story that gives me great pride to see the positive contribution the Club continues to make for the girls in our community and beyond from a physical and mental health wellbeing point of view. A story that is the basis of this book. I hope it brings back a lot of wonderful memories.

As a player, when you retire you want to leave a jersey in a better place. As a manager or a coach, when you finish you want to leave the team in a better place. Sheila Norris When an Administrator leaves, they want to make sure they have left the Club in a better place. I would like to think that I left Piltown Ladies Gaelic Football Club in a better place when I moved on, but I have no doubt the people involved currently are working very hard to ensure that the club will bring even greater joy to future generations of Piltown girls as those involved in the First Decade.

I would ask you all to continue to support the girls, the game and the Club, now and for many years to come. Maith thú agus ádh mór ort amach anseo.

The answer to the question; how did I came to write this book, is very simple. The coronavirus COVID-19 and its restrictions afforded me time away from coaching and administrating Hurling, Gaelic Football and Ladies Football as well as not attending hundreds of matches per year in Hurling, Camogie, Gaelic Football and Ladies Football. Not that I liked not being able to attend matches and trainings of the sports I love with a passion, just that the free time was forced on me and I hate to be idle. Fortunately, I also love to collect information and records of the games and sessions I attend. Some would say I am obsessive in the minute detail, and they are probably correct. It can be a burden as often in the past bewildered at some GAA management team decisions, I was too honest and made it clear to the target’s displeasure. Wondering how did they not study the detail information, but alas… Over the years I have learned to be careful on the dissemination of details. However, when it comes to writing factual history, it is much more comfortable as the facts are already written in stone. This book is a labour of love about a club that I have spent 10 years as a coach, PRO and general administrator. A club full of players, coaches and administrators that I am proud and honoured to have been involved with.

I have seen up close the advantages of Ladies Football. It has given both my daughters (Jennifer & Lisa) huge confidence in their sports development. It has been a natural complement to the number one sport in every parish in Kilkenny and that is Hurling/Camogie. It has been a fantastic foundation and more than ever now, given the current direction of the “modern” stick game. Particularly in Jennifer’s case. At Under- 12, she was not enthusiastic about sports participation. However, Kilkenny football affords great opportunities to all as it’s not always the typical expected superstar that gets a chance to play important roles. Football managers in Kilkenny are more inclined to look outside the box as a necessity. I was so proud, and shocked at the time, when I took time off work and went to to watch Piltown play a primary schools football final, expecting Jennifer to be sitting it out. Just going as, a parent to support regardless. To see her start, centre back and have a fantastic game was amazing. I rang my wife, Sheila with excitement. It was the turning point in sport for Jennifer in my opinion. It has led to so many great days since as she won three Munster medals in football with Scoil Mhuire and three Leinster Medals with Kilkenny while the confidence and the skills were a huge foundation for her to win Club and County All-Ireland Intermediate Camogie medals on the greatest GAA stage in Croke Park with Piltown and Kilkenny. If you have similar dreams for your children, encourage them to become dual players for as long as possible and play Gaelic Football. If you are an adult and not playing senior for Kilkenny, stay at it!

I would like to play tribute to my wife Sheila Norris who founded the club in 2010. Sheila is without doubt the greatest administrator in Kilkenny and although her primary allegiance is with Camogie these days, she too recognises the value of a thriving football background. I would like to thank her for her patience and my three children, Jennifer, Jamie and Lisa who all have a lot to put up with. It is understandable in modern society the cringe factor for young people, but I am very proud of all they have achieved and will achieve.

Now I would ask you, to read, look at the pictures, enjoy the statistics, but make sure this piece of Piltown GAA history is carried into the future. If you like it, please donate to Piltown Ladies Gaelic Football Club only. The funds will be much appreciated. I am firm believer that nobody should profit from their hobby. I have no wish to gain personally other people reading this. To reiterate this is a labour of love.

2010 - THE BIRTH

Piltown Ladies Gaelic Football Club was born in 2010. However, the story of Ladies Gaelic Football in Piltown precedes 2010 with the game having been played in the local national schools, particularly Piltown for a number of years previously. This is where the seeds of the game came from. Like in any sport our education system is hugely important. There was some success particularly in the INTO Mini-Sevens competition, with a success at county level in 1999 under the umbrella name of Piltown National School. Owning National School followed up with a victory in 2002. That team featured Katie Power who went on to win All-Ireland senior Camogie medals with Kilkenny as well as 3 All-Stars and Young player of the Year in 2005.

However, Girls Gaelic Football really got into full flow in Piltown National School in 2005 when former Waterford player Bridget Drohan came to the school to teach. In 2007, the girls again won the Mini-Sevens in Kilkenny. Several of the girls on that team were to become the first players of the Piltown club; Panel: Jennifer Norris, Sinead McCarthy, Laura Grace, Rhona Dowley, Claire Flanagan, Shauna Cummins, Aisling McGowan, Niamh Mundy, Caroline O’Shea, Rhona Dowley (Pictured Below) In 2008, a landmark was reached when the Primary Schools team won the Roinn B championship in Nowlan Park by beating by 5-6 to 2-2.

Panel: Sinead McCarthy (Capt), Chloe Blackmore, Aoífe Moore, Lisa McCarthy, Orla Hayes, Jennifer Norris, Ellen Commins, Shauna Commins, Ellen Cooney, Sarah Murphy, Eva Flanagan, Claire Flanagan, Roisin Phelan, Niamh Mundy, Claire Power, Ciara Phelan, Shauna Murphy, Emma Fitzpatrick, Stephanie Falconer, Robyn Oakey, Ann Maire Egan, Rebecca Kelly, April Kelly, Jessica Poyntz, Lauren O’Meara

In 2009, the School followed up with victory in the Roinn A final. It came after a with in Nowlan Park when they comprehensively won by 10-1 to 1-2. Page 6 Author: Seamus Norris PILTOWN LADIES GAELIC FOOTBALL Following the schools success, Jennifer Norris and Sinead McCarthy became the first Piltown girls to play inter county for Kilkenny when they were part of the 2009 Leinster Under-14 Championship squad. Jennifer Norris went on the win a Leinster Blitz medal with Kilkenny when they beat Kildare in Carlow Town in the 2009 Division 3 final. It was the first time Kilkenny had won a Leinster ladies football blitz title.

In 2010, the interest in Ladies Gaelic Football skyrocketed. Owning and Templeorum National Schools combined to compete in the school’s championships. The year was memorable in that Piltown National School won a third consective County Title (2nd Roinn A) and Owning/Templeorum won the Roinn D title at the first attempt. Two primary school’s county titles for the Parish in the one year! An amazing and unprecedented feat.

The success needed leadership to make it a club. 2010 (April) was the year and up stepped Sheila Norris (now the current Chairperson of Kilkenny County Camogie Board and former Secretary of Camogie county board and Piltown Camogie Club). She started work on the new club. She was joined by Siobhan McCarthy, Fran McGrath and a man from Wicklow, John Kavanagh who had Gaelic Football experience to become the club’s first coach. Seamus Norris became the first club PRO.

On 15th April 2010, another historic first took place in Thomastown when the Piltown club fielded their first Ladies Gaelic Football team in a match. The minor team took on the might of the Kilkenny County Under-14 team who were preparing for the Leinster Championship semi-final at that time and were regarded as a very stong team. The Piltown team did well despite defeat as they started to come to grips with club football. Team: Niamh Dermody, Claire Power, Antonia Power (Capt), Stephanie Falconer, Debbie Phelan, Sarah Murphy, Jennifer Norris, Edel Long, Lorraine Long, Joanne Bourke, Lisa Walsh, Siobhan Dermody, Sinead McCarthy, Jean Power, Jessica Poyntz Subs: Sarah Walsh, Lisa McCarthy, Ciara O’Dwyer, Leanne O’Hara, Aisling Briscoe Mentors: John Kavanagh and Sheila Norris

The club's historic first win was not long coming and came in an International Under-16 Blitz on 10th July 2010 when they beat Roanmore (Waterford) 2-1 to 2-0 at W.I.T. grounds in Carriganore. They also played their first international game in this blitz when they played New York. Panel: Lorraine Long (Capt), Lisa Walsh, Katelynn Phelan, Stephanie Falconer, Sinead McCarthy, Debbie Phelan, Jennifer Norris, Laura Grace, Joanne Bourke, Caroline O’Shea. Claire Power, Shannon Keever, Sarah Walsh, Aisling Briscoe, Sarah McTiernan, Lisa Norris.

On the 31st July 2010, the Under-16's beat by 3-6 to 3-2 in the Shield Final of the county 7-A-side blitz to record the club's first ever county title. This took place at the O'Loughlin Gaels grounds (Johns Park). Team: Stephanie Falconer (Capt), Jennifer Norris, Antonia Power, Debbie Phelan, Laura Grace, Claire Power, Katelynn Phelan.

This was followed up by victory in the Under-14 county blitz in Freshford to cap a magnificent first year of the club. Piltown beat James Stephens, St. Lachtains and drew with Mullinahone (Tipperary). Panel: Claire Power (Capt), Stephanie Falconer, Jean Power, Leanne O’Hara, Sarah Murphy, Alice Talbot, Siobhan Dermody, Katelynn Phelan, Lisa McCarthy

Sinead McCarthy (Ignore Thomastown Jersey) and Jennifer Norris were the first two players from Piltown to play for Kilkenny and they also got to play in Croke Park in an Under-14 Inter-County Bltz.

In 2011, the club began to grow both on and off the field. Piltown entered an Under-16 and Minor team in the Tipperary League/Championship, as there was no competition in Kilkenny for these age groups, reaching Tipperary Championship semi-finals at Under-16 Roinn C (lost to Boherlahan-Dualla 3-8 to 8-5) and Minor Roinn D (lost to Fethard 1-5 to 3-10). A huge and unexpected win over Sliabh na mBan in the Under-16 League by 9-9 to 2-5 was a massive boost to the club. Both teams had many players who played for Scoil Mhuire, Carrick-On-Suir and the rivalry was intense but the Tipperary team was expected to come out on top. The Piltown girls were not overawed and put in a fantastic exhibition for a comprehensive win. The famous victory took place on the back pitch in Piltown on 15th May 2011. Team: Stephanie Falconer, Siobhan Dermody, Jean Power, Anna Cuddihy, Debbie Phelan, Jennifer Norris, Lisa McCarthy, Lorraine Long (0-2), Alice Talbot, Kelly Ann Doyle (2-1), Niamh Dermody, Sarah Murphy (0-1), Claire Power (2-1), Katelynn Phelan (5-2), Edel Long (0-2) Subs: Sarah Walsh, Aisling Briscoe, Laura Dunne, Leanne O’Hara, Shauna Coady.

Development through the schools continued to progress very well. Again, Piltown parish was the only team in the county fielding two schools’ teams. Owning/Templeorum National schools recorded their second consecutive schools title beating Carrickshock 2-5 to 2-4 in the Roinn C final. Panel: Fiona Long (Joint Capt.), Laura O’Dwyer (Joint Captain), Caoimhe O’ Callaghan, Sophie Holden, Emer Long, Aoife Doyle, Sarah Jayne Brophy, Amy Walsh, Emily McCarthy, Aoife Culleton, Catherine Hearne, Laura Culleton, Laura Power, Anna Frisby, Niamh Foley, Megan Byrne, Haley Starr, Katie Grey, Clodagh Butler, Maíre-Beth Kirby. Incredibly Owning/Templeorum reached a second county final in 2011, as the primary schools football year was brought forward to before Christmas so two competitions were held in the one year. This time Owning/Templeorum were beaten in the Roinn B Final by the Gael Scoil 0-6 to 4-3 in Palmerstown. Another unequalled feat. The aforementioned Scoil Mhuire, Carrick-on-Suir was also developing Piltown players with the Post-primary players getting the opportunity to play with the more experienced Waterford and Tipperary players from Comeragh Rangers and Sliabh na mBan.

At inter-county level, Kilkenny were fielding teams and with some success, famously winning the Leinster Under- 16 Roinn C Final. They beat Offaly 4-7 to 3-4 in Graiguecullen in a game that had a huge period of unexplained injury time where the Kilkenny girls bravely held on. Jennifer Norris was on the starting team and she was joined on the panel by Katelyn Phelan, Antonia Power, Jean Power and Sarah Murphy. Lisa Norris, Emily McCarthy and Aoife Doyle played for the county Under-13 team. All the schools and inter-county contribution was having a massive positive affect on the club.

The 2012 phenomenon was a range of eschatological beliefs that cataclysmic or transformative events would occur on or around 21st December 2012. This date was regarded as the end date of a 5,126-year-long cycle in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar and festivities took place to commemorate the event in the countries that were part of the Maya civilization. In simple language, it was a prediction of the end of the world. For some 2020 right now, might feel like that too, but as we continue our look back at the history Piltown Ladies Gaelic Football, we are confident the world did not end and Piltown Ladies Gaelic Football was in its budding infancy.

To be fair, in 2012, the club met a few bumps in the road. Some very big that they did feel like the end of the world. The biggest setback was that the promising Under-16 and Minor teams were not allowed play in Tipperary. The huge win over Sliabh na mBan in 2011 was a key factor. The manager of that team was a key Tipperary County Board officer and had been instrumental in helping Piltown into Tipperary in the first place. However, if you go to someone’s house and take it over, you very quickly become an unwelcome visitor. The co-operation of 2011 disappeared. The girls were left without competitive football because at that stage there was no club action in and with Piltown Camogie heading into a golden era, many very good footballers were lost for good to Piltown.

On the bright side, the club fielded an Under-12 team for the first time. Seamus Norris was joined as coach by Aine Knox. The Cork native was to become hugely instrumental in the growth of the club. Seamus and Aine were the only club coaches at that stage and worked together to keep the club afloat in good and bad times both on and off the pitch. Although there were only blitzes in Kilkenny in 2012 for Under-12’s, the Under-12 team went through the year with a 100% record. The Under-14 team established themselves as the third best team in the county behind the strongholds of the new Kilkenny City, which was effectively a county team, pulling from a huge area and Thomastown. They also pulled off a surprise in the first round of Féile when they beat Thomastown only to come a cropper to Kilkenny City in the semi-final.

Underpinning the growth of the club continued to be the schools. Owning/Templeorum won the parishes sixth title in four years and their third county title when they beat Kilmanagh 3-6 to 0-1 in the Roinn B final at Nuncio Road. This was a golden era in any code of Piltown GAA at primary schools’ level, unlikely to be ever repeated. The combined work of the teachers involved, Brigid Drohan (Piltown) and Pat O’Gorman (Owning/Templeorum) and the club coaches created memories and records never to be forgotten. Team: Laura Falconer, Patsy Kenny, Jenny O’Dea, Chloe Walsh, Olivia Ronan, Aine Doyle, Maíre Beth Kirby (1-0, Joint Captain), Laura Power (1-3, Joint Captain), Marlise Flynn, Sophie Holden (1-1), Melissa Byrne, Sarah Jayne Brophy (0-2, 1 free). Subs: Ciara Dunne, Bríbhanna Doody, Niamh Whelan, Mollie O’Dwyer

The success was spilling over to the local girls’ secondary school, Scoil Mhuire, Carrick-On-Suir. Piltown girls combined with the might of Comeragh Rangers (Waterford) and Sliabh na mBan to win the Munster Junior Colleges Roinn D. Jennifer Norris and Kelly Ann Doyle were key players in that schools first ever Munster Ladies Gaelic Football title. They were joined by Fiona Long. Jennifer Norris, Lorraine Long and Kelly Ann Doyle were also on the Scoil Mhuire senior team beaten by a single point by Rockwell College in the Munster Roinn D Final.

2012, saw an increase in the number of Piltown Girls playing inter county for Kilkenny. Jennifer Norris, Lorraine Long and Sinead McCarthy played minor. At Under-16, the club was represented by Katelynn Phelan and Lisa McCarthy. The under-14 representatives were Nicola Phelan, Aoife Norris, Aoife Doyle, and Fiona Long. At under-12, highlighting the club’s inaugural unbeaten year were Caoimhe O’Callaghan, Lisa Norris, Megan Byrne, Sophie Holden and Hilary Balding. As well as that Lisa Norris, Caoimhe O’Callaghan and Aoife Doyle represented Kilkenny at the Leinster finals in the mini games.

Lisa Norris won the inaugural Training League which was introduced to encourage competitive training. The club finished the year with its first ever internal club blitz. The winning team was Kelly Ann Doyle (Player of the Match in the final), Lisa McCarthy (Capt.), Emily McCarthy, Allana Gallagher, Aoibheann Kavanagh and Clodagh Butler.

2013

2013 started with Piltown having their first representative on the County Board as Seamus Norris became Vice- Chairman. The year saw Kilkenny County board make progress on the club scene as they introduced an Under-14 competition and increased the number of Under-12 blitzes. The club did very well in the Under-12 blitzes and took part in blitzes in Kilkenny, Thomastown, Graignamanagh where they were unbeaten and hosted one in Piltown. Overall, they won 8 games and lost 4. However, the highlight at underage was the Under-14s reaching the “B” County Final versus Erins Own. This was played in Nowlan Park on 28th October, but unfortunately victory went to the side by 3-6 to 0-1 (Laura Power 0-1). However, it was a great experience for the girls to play at Kilkenny GAA headquarters and it was the first ever time a Piltown Ladies Gaelic Football team played in Nowlan Park in a club county final. Panel: Emily McCarthy (Capt.), Lisa Norris, Sarah Jayne Brophy, Jennifer O’Dea, Megan Byrne, Sine Kavanagh, Sarah Tobin, Aoife Doyle, Laura Power, Aoibheann Kavanagh, Maíre Beth Kirby, Marlise Flynn, Alanna Dunphy, Alanna Gallagher, Laura Falconer, Chloe Power, Danielle O’Brien, Anna O’Brien, Maria Phelan, Emer Dunphy, Rebecca Doyle, Niamh Kirby, Emma Phelan, Jessica Gaynor, Bríbhanna Doody, Caoimhe O’Callaghan

In 2013, the club still only had two coaches, Seamus Norris and Aine Knox and they catered mainly for underage. The older girls were given permission to play adult football with the South Kilkenny based Three Friars who got permission to play in both the Tipperary Junior League and Championship. Jennifer Norris and Lorraine were on the Three Friars team that were beaten by Fethard in the Tipperary Junior “C” League Final. Aine Knox joined them on the panel. They went on to beat Moyle Rovers in the Championship Final to claim Tipperary county championship medals. Several of the Three Friars squad had won All-Ireland Junior medals with Kilkenny in 2007 but our girls were invaluable to their success. Jennifer Norris then played on the Three Friars team that reached the All-Ireland Junior 7’s Quarter Final versus Douglas of Cork at Malahide that September.

Lorraine Long’s team won the annual club blitz: The team was Allana Gallagher, Jennifer O’Dea, Niamh Tobin, Anna O’Brien and Chloe Power. Chloe Power won the Training League. The coaches introduced a skills award system for the club and 17 players received Silver Skills Measurement Certificates of Achievement and 8 received Bronze. Kim Brophy became the clubs first referee when she completed a Go Games refereeing course.

Sixteen Piltown players played for Kilkenny at various levels in 2013. Individual inter-county success came when Emily McCarthy and Aoife Doyle were on the Kilkenny Under-14 team that won the Leinster Shield beating Wicklow in Tinryland. Lisa Norris and Megan Byrne played with the Kilkenny Under-14 development squad at the Leinster blitz in Carlow Town. Jennifer Norris and Katelynn Phelan were on the Kilkenny Minor team that reached the Leinster Semi-Final. Jennifer became the first Piltown player to captain a Kilkenny Minor team in the championship in any code. The club had a record number of nine players featured on the Kilkenny Under-12 Development Squads for blitzes in Carlow Town; The Piltown 9 were; Jennifer O'Dea, Sarah Jayne Brophy, Sarah Tobin, Laura Power, Laura Falconer, Marlise Flynn, Chloe Power, Danielle O'Brien and Anna O’Brien. Two Under-12’s, Laura Power and Jennifer O’Dea featured on the Kilkenny mini games team during the Leinster Finals at Dr. Cullen Park. Six players were involved in the Under-13 Development Squads (Lisa Norris, Sarah Tobin, Danielle O’Brien, Jenny O’Dea, Laura Power and Anna O’Brien) while Emily McCarthy was with the Under-15s. Additionally Seamus Norris was involved in team management at Minor, Under-13 and Under-12 level while Jennifer Norris was also involved in coaching Under-13 and Under-12 development squads as the club was making a telling mark at county level.

The schools continued to play their part in developing Piltown players. Four club players were on the Scoil Mhuire Senior Colleges team that beat Mount St. Michael (Roscarbery) from Cork in Castletownroche in the Munster “C” Championship Final. They were Jennifer Norris, Kelly Ann Doyle, Lorraine Long and Sinead McCarthy. Kelly Ann also got Player of the Match in the final, probably the first Kilkenny player to get a Player of the Match in a Munster Football Final ever and against Cork opposition! The team was coached by Piltown’s Gaelic4Mother player, Annette O’Connell. Scoil Mhuire then won the Munster “B” championship later in the year and our representatives were Jennifer Norris, Kelly Ann Doyle And Chloe Holden.

MUNSTER SENIOR “C” CHAMPIONS L-R: Sinead McCarthy, Lorraine Long, Kelly Ann Doyle (Player of the Match), Jennifer Norris For the first time ever, Piltown were represented by two primary schools’ teams in the Roinn A championship. Owning/Templeorum beat Piltown in the quarter final before losing to the eventual champions Gowran in the semi- final.

The club had a successful trial of Gaelic4Mothers & Others, the inspiration of Aine Knox. After a slow start, almost 40 ladies had taken part by the end of the year. They played their first match away to Thomastown on 19th September 2013, losing 1-3 to 2-7 and did very well scoring a goal in the first minute but eventually beaten by a more experienced Thomastown team. Page 16 Author: Seamus Norris PILTOWN LADIES GAELIC FOOTBALL 2014 On field success in 2014 included the Under-14’s winning the Roinn B championship for the first time. The qualifying route included being beaten in the Roinn A Final. The level of coaching was improving all the time as was the standard of the players. The Under-14’s reached their first ever Roinn A final, but suffered defeat to Erins Own in the final for the second consecutive year. The idiosyncrasies of the setup though meant they automatically qualified for the Roinn B final. On 22nd November in Graignamanagh, with venue conceded, the Piltown club won its first county championship beating Barrow Gaels 7-3 to 1-8 in a great match dominated by the winners. Scorers: Marlise Flynn (2-1), Chloe Power (2-1, 0-1f), Aoibheann Kavanagh (1-1), Aoife Doyle (1-0), Melissa Byrne (1-0) Team: Danielle O’Brien, Megan Byrne, Jenny O’Dea, Maria Phelan, Lisa Norris (Capt.), Vivienne Healy, Sarah Tobin, Laura Power, Maire Beth Kirby, Aoibheann Kavanagh, Bríbhanna Doody, Aoífe Doyle, Sine Kavanagh, Marlise Flynn, Chloe Power Subs: Anna O’Brien, Patsy Kenny, Melissa Byrne, Ciara Dunne, Aine Doyle, Emma Phelan, Managers: Seamus Norris & Aine Knox

The Under-12 squad were unbeaten again in a year where 22 juvenile matches were played. Efforts were continuing to bring the development up the ages and at Under-16 the club joined with Barrow Gaels for the county blitz as the numbers still had not reached sufficient levels to compete independently. Chloe Power won her second consecutive Training League.

The Gaelic4Mothers and Others initiative began to boom with 25 G4M+O players registering. They played 11 games against teams from seven different counties and then went to the National Blitz in Portmarnock for the first time where they were unbeaten whilst only conceding 6 points and no goals. They played four games at the national blitz against teams from very strong footballing counties with players that had played real competitive football in the past. The games were against Ballymun Kickhams (Dublin), Athlone (Westmeath), Killea (Tipperary) and Lissan (Derry). The team was managed by Aine Knox and Seamus Norris. Squad: Aine Knox, Catherine Crotty, Catherine Moore, Sarah Cuddihy, Deirdre Kane, Elaine Kennington, Ann Power, Deirdre Dowd, Michelle O’Shea, Ann Gahan

The school’s success continued at Post Primary level with 5 Piltown players on the Scoil Mhuire (Carrick-On-Suir) team that won the Munster and All-Ireland Junior Colleges Championship. They were Kelly Ann Doyle, Emily McCarthy, Lisa Norris, Aoife Doyle and Laura Power. Another three were on the Senior team that won the Munster title. These were Jennifer Norris, Kelly Ann Doyle and Chloe Holden. At primary school level the Piltown parish again fielded two teams in Roinn A. In 2014, they met each other in the quarter-final with victory going to Owning/Templeorum. Unfortunately, they lost out at the next stage to a very strong Thomastown team.

Emily McCarthy was on the Under-16 Kilkenny team that won the Leinster Shield while seven players lined out with the under-14 county team (Lisa Norris, Megan Byrne, Jennifer O’Dea, Laura Power, Sarah Jayne Brophy, Vivienne Healy and Aoife Doyle). Seamus Norris was involved in the management of the team as they reached the Leinster Division 2 Shield final losing out in a very high scoring game to Carlow 4-11 to 6-15. Four Piltown players lined out with the Under-12 county squad (Chloe Power, Marlise Flynn, Patsy Kenny and Melissa Byrne).

At adult level, Jennifer Norris won a junior county medal with Thomastown with a permission to play as Piltown had no adult team, Chloe Power and Marlise Flynn played in the mini games at the Leinster Finals in Portlaoise. Seamus Norris continued as Vice-Chairman of the County Board and also took on the added responsibility of PRO as the county scene continued to grow.

2015

Change continued in 2015 as the year, saw club founder Sheila Norris stepping down as chairperson due to growing County Camogie commitments. However, an equally strong leader stepped into the breach as Aine Knox started driving the club to the next level. This included more female coaches and more juvenile involvement on the back of the successful G4M+O initiative from the previous year.

On the field successes included the Under-12’s who beat Muckalee in the Roinn C Final, 6-6 to 4-3. This was a fantastic debut for the new management of Sandra Quinn, Jennifer Norris and Colette Mannix overseeing the Clubs first county title at Under-12. Panel: Patsy Kenny (Capt.) Aine Doyle, Aisling Brophy, Chloe Walsh, Ciara Dunne, Ellie Ann Matthias, Emma Culleton, Fiona Downey, Jodie Keever, Lauren Butler, Melissa Byrne, Rachel Flynn, Sarah Driscoll, Tegan Foley, Jenny Morahan, Leah Cooney, Éabha Maher, Kayleigh O’Shea, Rachel O'Keeffe, Abi McGrath.

This was followed up by the Under- 13’s winning the Roinn B County Final beating great rivals Erins Own by 2-7 to 0-2. Given that the club had lost three consecutive Under- 14 finals to the Castlecomer outfit, it was great to have turned the tables around on this occasion Panel: Marlise Flynn (Capt.), Jodie Keever, Aine Doyle, Sarah Driscoll, Patsy Kenny, Lauren Butler, Ciara Dunne, Chloe Power, Fiona Downey, Aisling Brophy, Melissa Byrne, Sally Moroney, Emma Culleton, Elle Ann Matthias, Chloe Walsh. Unfortunately, the Under-14 team was beaten in the Roinn B county final, losing for the third year running to Erins Own. They also were beaten in the county semi-final of Féile by Thomastown. The Under-16 team was beaten in the reduced sides semi-final at home to Clara.

The Gaelic4Mothers and Others had another very successful performance at the National Blitz in Portmarnock beating St Pauls (Laois), Ballymun Kickhams (Dublin) and Ballyhaise (Cavan) all from strong traditional footballing

Page 20 Author: Seamus Norris PILTOWN LADIES GAELIC FOOTBALL counties. Unfortunately, they suffered their first ever defeat at the National Blitz losing to Clonbullogue of Offaly, by only 0-1 to 0-3. In all, 48 matches were played at all levels by Piltown Ladies Gaelic Football in 2015, winning 25, losing 21 and 2 were drawn. Two winners’ cups were collected. 51 players took part in the club training league. 25 juvenile training sessions took place which had an average attendance of 20.56 players. It was wonderful to welcome new trainers on board in 2015 who did the Foundation Coaching Course at the start of the year and the contribution of Catherine Moore, Sandra Quinn, Jennifer Norris, Colette Mannix and Mandy McGrath and Elaine Kennington who also helped out at one of the blitzes was greatly appreciated by the players and parents.

Piltown primary schools team again reached a county final but this time they lost out to Gowran in the Roinn B Final. Owning/Templeorum again competed in this competition at Roinn A. There were three players from Piltown involved in the Munster Senior Colleges "A" Final as Scoil Mhuire (Carrick-On-Suir) lost out to Colaiste Dun Iascaigh (Cahir). They were Emily McCarthy, Kelly Ann Doyle and Aoife Doyle.

At inter county level, the Under-14’s won the Leinster 2C Shield final beating Carlow in the Final and Piltown were represented by Danielle O’Brien, Marlise Flynn, Chloe Power, Jennifer O’Dea and Anna O’Brien. Emily McCarthy was the Piltown representative on the Under-16 panel while Catherine McCarthy was a member of the Under-16 management team. Patsy Kenny was the club representative for the mini games at the Leinster Finals. Danielle O’Brien represented the club in the county Féile skills final. The Club training league was won by Leah Cooney.

At county board level, Seamus Norris completed his second year as the county PRO and his third year as county vice-chairman. At the end of the year he stood down. It had been a busy few year in which the club game grew multiple times within the county and the game structures were improved immensely. Success at juvenile level in inter-county competitions were becoming the norm also. Sheila Norris remained as joint county children’s officer for another year. At national level, Jennifer Norris was on the National Youth committee that organised the first ever national youth forum. Among the delegates from the club were Lisa Norris, Emma Culleton and Aoife Culleton.

2016 was yet another successful year on the field for Piltown Ladies Gaelic Football with success at both Under-12 and Under-16. Both teams beat Dunnamaggin teams in exciting county finals and deservedly won the championships. It brought to six the number of championships won by the club since it was formed in 2010, maintaining an average of one per year.

The Under-12D final saw Piltown beat Dunnamaggin in a cracking game by 2-4 to 1-1 in Thomastown. The management team of Jennifer Norris, Sandra Quinn and Michelle O’Shea oversaw a second consecutive county final victory at this age group as they nurtured a lot of new players. Panel: Sarah Driscoll (Capt.), Aine Blanca, Caoimhe McEvoy, Rachel O'Keeffe, Katie Doyle, Leah Cooney, Kate O'Hora, Amelia Coghlan, Grace Whelan, Rachel Flynn, Lorna O'Neill, Kayleigh O'Shea, Eabha Maher, Sarah Kelly, Laoise McEvoy, Sarah O'Keeffe, Isobel O'Hora, Emily O'Keeffe.

The Under-16s had a big victory over Muckalee in the B semi-final despite a small health scare for one of the management team. It had been a well-rounded team performance. They then faced Dunnamaggin in the final in Windgap. The final turned out to be a fantastic football match and goal fest. Despite conceding 2-1 and not registering a score in the first five minutes, Piltown showed tremendous resolve to come out on top 7-7 to 3-5 in a thrilling game. 27th November 2016, and Piltown had won their first Under-16 county title. Although the Under-14’s made the semi-finals of Féile there was disappointment for them in the championship. There was no competition in 2016 for the Under-13’s or the Minors. Seamus Norris stepping down from the county board unfortunately seemed to correspond with a dip in county activities. On the inter-county scene, representation was low. The club was represented at county level by Marlise Flynn and Patsy Kenny (under-14) and Emily McCarthy (Minor). The Gaelic4Mothers and Others did not play any games with numbers being very small. This was very disappointing after the huge progress of previous years.

In all, 28 matches were played at all levels by Piltown Ladies Gaelic Football in 2016, winning 15. Two winner’s cups were collected. 56 players were registered. The 2016 Training League was won by Rebecca Doyle.

Current club players Lisa Norris and Emily McCarthy as well as former club players Kelly Ann Doyle, Aoife Doyle and Jennifer O’Dea won Munster and subsequently All-Ireland Senior Colleges "A" medals when Scoil Mhuire (Carrick- On-Suir) beat Coláiste Íosagáin Dublin in the final at Nowlan Park. In football terms, it was and still is a huge achievement for Kilkenny girls to win football All-Ireland medals. Not many Kilkenny boys or girls can claim such a distinction. The Munster Final had been played in Piltown when the Carrick school beat Colaiste Dun Iascaigh (Cahir) 4-14 to 4-5. Also great for the Piltown girls to win Munster football medals on their home turf.

The Owning/Templeorum and Piltown primary schools’ teams competed in the Roinn A/B championships again in 2016. The Owning/Templeorum combination fared best as they reached the semi-final before they were beaten by a strong Dunnamaggin school who gained retribution for the earlier county final defeats, but there was lots of potential on show.

At adult Level, the Southern amalgamation of Three Friars re-emerged again and won the Division 2 League beating Erins Own in the final 4-8 to 0-4, with Jennifer Norris on board in the backs with a permission to play to pick up another adult county medal, her third.

2017

2017 was another great year on the field of play as regards development of players, but it was also a very sad year for the club. Thursday 1st June 2017 was a wet, miserable day as the tears of heaven fell for Piltown Ladies Gaelic Football as the club learned of the untimely passing of one of our Gaelic4Mothers and Others players and the club G4M+O Officer, Ann Gahan (Mountain Grove). Ann was a key member of the social and recreational activity group and very popular amongst her peers. She was also a fine footballer and was one of the standout players for the Club’s first foray to the National Blitz at Portmarnock in 2014 when the team was unbeaten and again 2015 when the team only lost one game by the narrowest of margins. She was always central to the camaraderie that is pivotal to the Gaelic4Mothers ethos. Ann led by example off the field as well and after the G4M+O group saw a lull in activities for 2016, Ann took on the role of Club G4M+O Officer for 2017 with a view to rejuvenating the fun and enthusiasm. Unfortunately, Ann Gahan R.I.P. not long after accepting the position, Ann was diagnosed with a progressive illness which was to take her life in a short space of time.

In 2017, more new coaches came onboard. The highlight on the field of play was yet another county title at Under- 12. Three in a row! Incredible development at the underage level. This time it came in the B final with a 13-4 to 0-0 victory over Clara with home venue a distinct advantage. For captain, Leah Cooney, Éabha Maher, Kayleigh O’Shea and Rachel O'Keeffe, it was their third winners medal at Under-12. The result also maintained the Club’s average of one championship title a year average. Squad: Leah Cooney (Capt.), Aoibhe O'Neill, Cliodhna Malone, Eabha Maher, Emily Falconer, Emma O'Shea, Hannah Carroll, Isobel O'Hora, Kate O'Hora, Kayleigh O'Shea, Laoise McEvoy, Lia O'Brien, Libby Smith, Mia Murphy, Rachel O'Keeffe, Sarah Kelly Management Team: Sandra Quinn, Michelle O’Shea, Laura Power, Aine O’Keeffe

The Under-14’s lost the league final to Clara at Clara in a high scoring game, 5-4 to 10-7. Later in the year they lost the Championship Shield final to Erins Own in Dunnamaggin. It was also high scoring 5-6 to 7-4. Panel: Jodie Keever (Capt.), Melissa Byrne, Lauren Butler, Niamh McDermott, Sarah Driscoll, Aíne Blanca, Patsy Kenny, Leah Cooney, Ciara Dunne, Éabha Carroll, Lorna O'Neill, Aíne Doyle, Emily Carroll, Fiona Downey, Jessica Newell, Emma Culleton, Grace Whelan, Kayleigh O'Shea, Katie Doyle, Rachel O'Keeffe, Laoise McEvoy, Caoimhe McEvoy The Under-16 also suffered the same fate in the Championship Shield final to the same opposition. The game held in Castlecomer was yet another high scoring game, 4-6 to 8-4.

The Gaelic4Mothers and Others initiative was aided in its return after the tragic events in June and they returned to compete in the National Blitz in Portmarnock. Great credit to Collette and Dan Mannix for making it happen. Collette from Dublin and Dan from Cork also gave it that added knowledge of football from strongholds of the game.

In 2017, Kilkenny Ladies Gaelic Football fielded an adult team in the National League, Leinster Junior and All-Ireland Junior series after a break of a number of years. Piltown were represented on the squad by Jennifer Norris and Lisa Norris with the highlight being a historic victory over Lancashire in the All-Ireland series in a game held in . It was the first win for an adult Kilkenny win since 2008. It was great for the club to have representation for such a historic win. At underage inter-county level, Piltown was represented at county level by Aine Doyle and Ciara Dunne (under-14), Anna O’Brien, Danielle O’Brien and Rebecca Derwin (under-16) and Lisa Norris and Emily McCarthy (Minor). At under-12 there was Nowlan Park Mini-Games for Leah Cooney, Éabha Maher, Kayleigh O’Shea and Rachel O'Keeffe. It also a great and proud honour for the club to have chairperson, Aíne Knox involved in county management in 2017. Aine also joined the county executive taking on the role of Assistant secretary in 2017 returning a Piltown involvement in the county executive in year where county activities once gain progressed.

Owning/Templeorum and Piltown primary schools’ teams competed in the school’s championships with Owning/Templeorum combination reaching the final only to lose to Tullogher (Listerlin/Rosbercon NS) by a goal in the last minute of extra time, 2-5 to 3-5.

The highlight on the field of play in 2018 was yet another county title at Under-12. Four in a row! A great achievement by all the Under-12 coaches over a four-year period. Special mention to Éabha Maher who played on all four winning teams. The 2018 final edition saw Piltown beat Clara 4-5 to 0-2 in Dunmore. Unfortunately, 2018 was a tough year for the older age groups with the results very disappointing as a result of a loss of a lot of players at the one time. A lot of players chose the give up sport or others concentrated on Camogie. Ladies Football is always delighted to see the success of the sister Camogie club over the years as there have been so many dual players. It is interesting that the success at underage in Camogie coincided with the best times for Ladies Football as both games complement each other. Particularly at underage this is hugely beneficial and the statistics show that when you reach the adult elite level in one, then is the optimum time to focus on one. Despite this the Under-14’s did reach the Roinn A League final only to lose to a strong Thomastown 4-4 to 9-12. In 2018, Piltown were also involved in the Community Games for the first time and it was great to have the Kilkenny Senior Gaelic Football manager and Kerry man, Christy Walsh lead a session, another first for the club. On the development side, Seamus Norris introduced the “Give It A Go Night” which afforded anyone to come to the field of any age and try out the game to see if they liked it and hopefully to return.

Gaelic4Mothers and Others continued in 2018 in a big way and although they did not compete in the National Blitz, due to the huge interest in this event and numbers being limited. They did play some very good challenge games and also organised the inaugural Ann Gahan Memorial Tournament which had Piltown, Ferrybank, and Dunnamaggin participating. Thanks go to Catherine Moore and Brian Gallagher for their coaching work having taken over from Dan and Collette Mannix. Brian, a Mayo man has huge experience in coaching football and his

©opyright 2020 Page 29 Electronic Edition FIRST DECADE involvement has refreshed the whole setup once again. Ann Power won the first G4M+O Player of the Year award as the social side of the club grew. Ann has been a stalwart of the initiative since its inception.

In 2018, Kilkenny fielded an adult team in the National League, Leinster Junior and All-Ireland junior series again. Piltown were again represented on the squad by Lisa Norris and also Jennifer Norris who played one game in the National League. It was also a great and proud honour for the club to have Aíne Knox involved in county management at adult and Minor level, with the Minors reaching a Leinster Minor “B” Shield Final only to lose to Longford. Lisa Norris was on this team. At underage inter-county level, Piltown was represented at county level by Lorna O’Neill and Sarah Driscoll (under-14). Lia O’Brien, Kate O’Hora, Laoise McEvoy and Aine Kirwan (under-12).

The three schools came together and played as one for the first time ever and for the first time since 2007. On one hand it is the sign of dwindling players coming through the primary school’s system but on the other hand it affords the opportunity to return to the glory days and be competitive at the top level. This manifested itself in a Piltown schools’ team they reaching the Finals of the County Mini-Sevens for the first time in a long number of years. In the Nowlan Park Finals victory was achieved over Carrickshock, but defeat against St. Canice’s and Dunnamaggin.

During 2019, the Piltown club participated in 54 games from Under-12 to G4M+O. Although on-field success was sparse in 2019, player development continued thanks to the dedicated coaches and consequently, possibly the clubs greatest ever achievement happened on the pitch. That highlight on the field of play was the Leinster Community Games silver medals won by the Under-14s. A first for the club and proud achievement for the club. Having gained the honour of representing Kilkenny in Leinster, the girls found themselves in Graiguecullen, Co. Laois for the Leinster finals of the Community games. The opposition in the semi-finals were the Dublin representatives, Ranelagh, so the Kilkenny team were obvious outsiders. The Piltown girls were up against it. However, they worked superbly all over the field to pull off a sensational result, beating the Dublin champions by 5-7 to 2-8. Incredible and fantastic. Huge work rate underpinned an outstanding team performance. It guaranteed at least a silver medal and place in a Leinster Final.

The final was another huge challenge as Piltown faced Féile champions, Kinnegad of Westmeath. The exertions of the first game took its toll and the first half performance was somewhat flat. However, in the second half the girls showed their spirit and determination. They were very impressive in possession and managed to win the second half without conceding a score. Unfortunately, it was too little too late as Kinnegad were deserved champions of Leinster, but the silver medals were belonging to Piltown representing County Kilkenny. Back in Kilkenny, the girls lost the league final to Kilkenny City and the championship shield final to Thomastown but nobody can ever take those silver medals away from them. Panel: Kayleigh O’Shea (Capt), Rachel O’Keeffe, Eabha Maher, Laoise McEvoy, Emily Falconer, Sophie Holden. Lia O’Brien, Aine Kirwan, Katelynn Moore, Marie Culleton, Sarah Kelly, Kate Farrell, Emma O’Shea, Aoibhe O’Neill, Libby Smith, Emma Kendrick. Management Team: Michelle O’Shea, Catherine Moore and Sarah Norris

The Under-12’s drive for five was halted by Kilkenny City in the “B” final. It is sport, it was never going to continue indefinitely. Nevertheless, like the teams that went before them, they performed to the best of their ability and GAA teams know 5-in-a-row is difficult, but getting there is a massive achievement. Panel: Libby Smith, Aoibhe O'Neill, Emma O'Shea, Hannah Carroll, Kate Farrell, Mia Dunphy, Emily Falconer, Isobel O'Hora, Libby Smith, Katie Diggins, Katelyn Moore, Cliodhna Malone, Grace Farrell, Ellen Knox, Saoirse Shanahan Roche, Clodagh McCarthy, Ciara Quinn, Sarah Doyle Management Team: Sandra Quinn and Sinead Glascott

Gaelic4Mothers and Others continued its popularity driven and led by Brian Gallagher and Catherine Moore in 2019. A group performed superbly as Abba in the Piltown GAA Lip-Sync. A performance that went down very well with the audience. They were back in the National Blitz where there played St. Maurs (Dublin), Navan O’Mahony

At the end of year social event, Bairbre Blanca was announced as G4M+O player of the Year. It has been a fantastic advertisement for the social initiative. As Aine Knox (chairperson and initiator of the G4M in Piltown) said during the year, “G4M+O has come of age”

The girls who represented their family and Piltown club in a Kilkenny Jersey in 2019 were; Emily McCarthy (Junior), Emma Culleton (Minor and Under-17), Kate Falconer (Minor), Rebecca Derwin (Minor), Lorna O’Neill (Under-15), Rachel O’Keeffe, Kayleigh O’Shea and Kate O’Hora (Under-14), Cliodhna Malone, Emily Falconer, Izzy O’Hora, Kate Farrell and Katelynn Moore (Under-12).

Special credit in 2019 went to Izzy O’Hora who won two Leinster Blitz titles with Kilkenny Under-12s while Emily Falconer and Cliodhna Malone won one. Catherine Moore coached with the Under-12 county teams.

The Successful Give-It-A-Go night again took place. Sandra Quinn, Ciara Quinn, Elaine Kennington and Kate Falconer took place in the launch of the Kilkenny GAA website at Nowlan Park. So ended the first 10 years of PILTOWN LADIES GAELIC FOOTBALL CLUB.

THEY WERE THERE AT THE BEGINNING

Cavan native Noelle Curran, pictured left presenting the 2014, Under-14B Cup to Captain Lisa Norris was very helpful and a great source of encouragement in the setting up of Piltown Ladies Gaelic Football Club in 2010. Noelle herself served as County PRO from 2003 to 2013 and as a player was the goalkeeper when Kilkenny beat London in the 2007 All- Ireland Junior final at Croke Park.

John Kavanagh (pictured above left) was the club’s first coach. John is a native of County Wicklow. He coached in 2010 and 2011 and set a solid foundation for coaching standards. Siobhan McCarthy (pictured above centre) and Fran McGrath (pictured above right) were the Clubs first Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Siobhan was also the original club Registrar also. Both got involved with coaching as did the first chairperson Sheila Norris and Siobhan led the club to its first county title, the 2010 Under-16 Shield in Johns Park versus Mullinavat.
