He is the fifth successor of the Promised Messiah and Reformer, Hadrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad as of Qadian. His Holiness was born on September 15, 1950 in Rabwah, Pakistan to the late Mirza Mansoor Ahmad and the late Nasirah Begum Ahmad. Upon completing his Masters Degree in Agricultural Economics in 1977 from the Agriculture University in Faisalabad, Pakistan, he formally dedicated his life to the service of Islam. He was sent to Ghana in 1977 where, for several years, he served as a principal of various Ahmadiyya Muslim schools. Later when His Holiness returned to Pakistan, he served in various capacities at the Headquarters of the Ahmadiyya Community in Rabwah. In 1999, His Holiness was imprisoned for a short period of time on the completely false charge or erasing words of the Holy Qur’an from a sign. x WORLD CRISIS AND THE PATHWAY TO PEACE Elected to the lifelong position of Khalifah (Caliph) of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community on 22nd April 2003, His Holiness serves as the worldwide spiritual and administrative head of an international religious organization with tens of mil- lions of members spread across more than 200 countries. Since being elected Khalifah, His Holiness has led a world- wide campaign to convey the peaceful message of Islam, through all forms of print and digital media. Under his leadership, national branches of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community have launched campaigns that reflect the true and peaceful teachings of Islam. Ahmadi Muslims the world over are engaged in grassroots efforts to distribute millions of ‘Peace’ leaflets to Muslims and non-Mus- lims alike, host interfaith and peace symposia and present exhibi- tions of the Holy Qur’an to present its true and noble message. These campaigns have received worldwide media coverage and demonstrate that Islam champions peace, loyalty to one’s country of residence and service to humanity. In 2004, His Holiness launched the annual National Peace Symposium in which guests from all walks of life come together to exchange ideas on the promotion of peace and harmony. Each year, the symposium attracts many serving ministers, parliamen- tarians, politicians, religious leaders and other dignitaries. His Holiness has travelled globally to promote and facilitate service to humanity. Under the leadership of His Holiness, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has built a number of schools and hospitals that provide excellent education and healthcare fa- cilities in remote parts of the world. His Holiness strives to establish peace at every level of soci- ety. He constantly advises members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim ABOUT THE AUTHOR xi Community to carry out a ‘Jihad’ (or struggle) of the self to strive to reform individually, which is the true and biggest form of ‘Jihad,’ so that every Ahmadi Muslim can establish peace on an individual level first of all, and then be enabled to help others also find peace. His Holiness gives the same message to all others. In response to a question relating to peacebuilding by a non-Muslim guest at a special reception in Melbourne, His Holiness said: “If you have peace in you, it means that you are projecting peace. And if every one of us had peace, it means that we would be projecting peace to others.” At an individual and collective level, on local, national and in- ternational platforms, His Holiness is striving to advise all others of the practical means of establishing peace, based on the true teachings of Islam. His Holiness, Mirza Masroor Ahmad aba currently resides in London, England. As spiritual leader of Ahmadi Muslims all over the world, he vigorously champions the cause of Islam through a refreshing message of peace and compassion. FOREWORD The world is passing through very turbulent times. The global economic crisis continues to manifest newer and graver dangers almost every week. The similarities to the period just before the Second World War continue to be cited and it seems clear that events are moving the world at an unprecedented pace towards a horrific third world war. There is an overwhelming sense that things are quickly getting out of control and the people are look- ing for someone to step on to the stage to offer concrete and solid guidance in which they can have confidence and that speaks to their heart and mind alike and gives them hope that there is a path that can lead to peace. The consequences of a nuclear war are so catastrophic that none dare even think about them. Here, in this book, we have gathered the guidance put forth by Hadrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the Head of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Over the past several years, as events have unfolded, he has been fearless in announcing to the xiv WORLD CRISIS AND THE PATHWAY TO PEACE world where things are heading—not to create alarm but to pre- pare them to think about how the world has arrived in this state of being and how it can avert disaster and chart a course to peace and security for all the people that inhabit this global village. He has forthrightly proclaimed that the only way to insure peace is for the world to adopt the ways of humility and justice and to humbly, submissively, turn to God; for man to become humane;

INDIA Printed at : Fazl-e-Umar Printing Press, Qadian ISBN : 978-81-7912-257-0 FOREWORD This is a time when the darkness of materialism has overspread the entire face of the earth and obscured people’s vision. Many there are who profess faith but are deprived of its true sweetness and strength. They are unaware of the One Living, Omnipresent God. For the benefit of seekers after truth, therefore, I present an abridged version of the teaching of the Holy Founder of the Ahmadiyya Movement as laid down in his book Kashti-Nuh (lit. Noah’s Ark) which he wrote to save men from the current deluge of irreligion and materialism. This book was intended mainly for the members of the Ahmadiyya Community but Muslims in general have also been addressed in it. The book is a torch of guidance through which every Muslim, nay every man with a craving for truth and spirituality, can rekindle his inner lamp and illuminate his heart. The present abridgement is an English rendering of the Founder’s own sacred words and, therefore, is replete with all the blessings that descend from heaven on the heart of a holy person.

    STATE OF WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS HANDBOOK OF RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND PRACTICES 1987 FIRST REVISION 1995 SECOND REVISION 2004 THIRD REVISION 2011 FOURTH REVISION 2012 FIFTH REVISION 2013 HANDBOOK OF RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND PRACTICES INTRODUCTION The Department of Corrections acknowledges the inherent and constitutionally protected rights of incarcerated offenders to believe, express and exercise the religion of their choice. It is our intention that religious programs will promote positive values and moral practices to foster healthy relationships, especially within the families of those under our jurisdiction and within the communities to which they are returning. As a Department, we commit to providing religious as well as cultural opportunities for offenders within available resources, while maintaining facility security, safety, health and orderly operations. The Department will not endorse any religious faith or cultural group, but we will ensure that religious programming is consistent with the provisions of federal and state statutes, and will work hard with the Religious, Cultural and Faith Communities to ensure that the needs of the incarcerated community are fairly met. This desk manual has been prepared for use by chaplains, administrators and other staff of the Washington State Department of Corrections. It is not meant to be an exhaustive study of all religions. It does provide a brief background of most religions having participants housed in Washington prisons. This manual is intended to provide general guidelines, and define practice and procedure for Washington State Department of Corrections institutions. It is intended to be used in conjunction with Department policy. While it does not confer theological expertise, it will, provide correctional workers with the information necessary to respond too many of the religious concerns commonly encountered.
