And it is by the great mercy of Allah that thou art kind towards them, and if thou hadst been rough and hard- hearted, they would surely have dispersed from around thee. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them, and consult them in matters of administration; and when thou art determined, then put thy trust in Allah. Surely, Allah loves those who put their trust in Him (3:160).

Ahadith

Hazrat Ayeshara relates that the Holy Prophetsaw said: “A believer can attain the rank of one who fasts during the day and spends the night in prayer through his good behavior” (Abu Daud). Hazrat Ayeshara relates that the Holy Prophetsaw said: “Gentleness adorns everything and its absence leaves everything defective” (Muslim). Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar bin Aasra relates that when the Holy Prophetsaw was asked what is the key to enter Paradise? He replied, “Telling the honest truth. Truth inculcates obedience; obedience inculcates those qualities that a true believer possesses. And a true believer enters Paradise” (Imam Malik).

as Writings of the Promised

I wish to see that my followers have become like the companions of the Holy Prophetsaw, in giving preference to Allah’s will. Nothing else should stand in their way. They should attach no importance to their riches or to their lives… The companions faced heavy odds to win Allah’s pleasure. If anyone one of them was not tired for Allah’s sake, he would feel worried. They had understood that the treasure of Allah’s pleasure was hidden under trials and tribulation… The Sahaba never stooped to worldly gains that they live long, amass wealth and enjoy a carefree life. Whenever I look to their example, I cannot but admit the highly ennobling spiritual powers of the Holy Prophetsaw. One wonders how he totally revolutionized their lives and made them to turn their faces towards Allah alone…. Our only object should be to seek Allah’s pleasure and we should make every effort to attain it; even though we are required to undergo hardships. For Allah’s pleasure is far better than this world and much more superior to all worldly pleasures (Malfoozat, Vol. VIII, pages 82 -83). The service of one’s fellow beings means to strive to their benefit purely for the sake of God in all their needs, and in all the relationships of mutual dependence which God has established, out of true and selfless sympathy for them. Everyone is in need of help and should be helped out of one’s God-given capacity and one must strive for their betterment both in this world and in the hereafter (Essence of Vol. 1 pages 13 – 17).

National Correspondence Message from Sadr Lajna Ima’illah USA, Saliha Malik

Over the past weeks we have been occupied with Local Sadr and Shura Delegate elections. Now the outcome of those has been decided, let us pause to give heartfelt thanks to Allah for His guidance on the elections, as conducted in our community! We only use Prayer in selecting our members for these tasks. There is no canvassing of any kind and no self-promotion and we are therefore spared a great deal of stress and anguish. As we can see in the worldly campaigning currently in full swing, how much ugly character defamation and self-aggrandizement flares up at election time. Alhamdulillah for our quiet and prayerful elections that carry the stamp of humility and service for the love of Allah! There is nothing like it in the world today. Now in all Majalis, Aamilah members have been selected and are called upon to take up the work of Lajna. Therefore I humbly request everyone – members, workers and office holders – to read again our beloved Huzoor’satba Khutba on Essence of Tarbiyyat (7/15/2016), included in this issue, which beautifully elucidates our teachings on the proper attitude we should foster in ourselves as workers and Aamilah members of the Ahmadi Community. May Allah the Almighty help us all be those who are: -

Watchful of our trusts, obedient

Having no contradiction between our words and deeds in our observance of faith

Forbearing, kind and gentle with people

Humble in spirit

Diligent and thorough in executing the tasks assigned to us And above all, may we be most mindful of keeping a loving, unbiased glance on everyone’s needs and that we do this work seeking the pleasure of Allah, recognizing that whatever we achieve is because of our link with Khilafat, by Allah’s Grace alone. May Allah enable us to absorb the words of our Beloved Khalifaatba into our lives, Ameen.

Selection of Huzoor’satba Sermons

Essence of Tarbiyyat - July 15, 2016 After the recitation of Shahada and Surah Fatiha, Huzoor said, sometime ago, I mentioned in a sermon that this is the year of the elections of the officer-holders of Jama'at. Elections have taken place at most places at national level and in local chapters. New office bearers have taken charge of their responsibilities. At some places new office bearers have been elected at national or local level but at many places the previous office bearers have again been elected. Newly elected office-holders should be grateful to Allah that they have been elected to serve the community and should seek the help of Allah bowing before Him humbly that may Allah allow them to discharge the trust they have been made responsible for. In the same way, the office bearers who have been elected again should also be grateful that Allah provided them the opportunity to serve again and should humbly pray that may Allah allow them to discharge the responsibilities of the trust given to them with all their capabilities. May Allah, through His Grace, ignore the omission, laziness and negligence they committed, which prevented them from meeting the requirements of their responsibilities. And that through His Grace, the opportunity and trust He has given them again for the next three years may not be affected by laziness, omission and negligence. And may Allah grant them the opportunity to discharge the responsibilities and trusts as required. It should be kept in mind that the service of Jama'at should not be considered an insignificant matter and should not be taken superficially. Every one of us, whether an officer or an ordinary member, has pledged to prefer faith over the world. When a person accepts to serve as an officer, or is appointed for a service, he has more responsibility than others that he fulfill his pledge and keep in mind that he has made this pledge with Allah, and that Allah has directed at many places in the Holy Qur’an to fulfill pledges. Thus, remember always that Allah has very clearly said that the trusts entrusted to you and accepted by you are your pledges and thus fulfill your trusts and pledges. At one place Allah has pointed out this sign of those who are true to their word and tread upon righteousness: … and those who fulfill their promise when they have made one... (2:178) This should be a distinction especially of the ones who take charge of a Jama'at responsibility that they always accomplish their responsibility keeping on truth and raising the standard of their righteousness. If there is any rumple in the standard of their truthfulness, there is a deficiency, if the standard of their righteousness is not an example for an ordinary member of the Community then they are not paying attention to discharging their pledge, their office and their trust. The Amirs and Presidents should first establish their examples in front of their Aamilah and in front of the members of the Community. There are secretaries of Tarbiyyat. Work of Tarbiyyat is given to them, and the training can only be accomplished when examples are established. One who carries out the work, who has the responsibility, who advises the others, should himself be the one who acts upon the directives. The Tarbiyyat secretaries should establish their examples before the members of the Community as the responsibility of training of the Community falls on them. I have mentioned at many occasions that if the Tarbiyyat department becomes active, the work of many other departments is accomplished all by itself. With the elevation in the standard of Tarbiyyat of the members of Jama'at, the work of other department will become easier. As an example, the work of the finance secretary will become easier, the work of the secretary Amure Ama (internal affairs) will become easier, the work of

Lajna Matters 3rd Quarter Issue, 2016 6 of 52

the Tabligh Secretary will become easier. In the same way as other departments, the work of Qadha will become easier. I usually say in the Aamilah meetings at various places to start the work of training from your home. This home is not only of the Secretary Tarbiyyat, rather it is the house of every member of the Aamilah. The Aamilah members above all should train themselves. Whatever programs the Amirs, Presidents or Tarbiyyat Secretaries make, they should first look at their Aamilah members, whether they are acting upon these programs or not. Are the Aamilah members fulfilling the fundamental directives of God and the purpose of the creation of man? If not then there is no righteousness. Worship is the greatest among the rights of Allah. Male members are directed to establish Prayers to this end. Establishment of Prayer is offering Prayers in congregation. Thus Amirs, Presidents, and office bearers should make a concerted effort to offer Salat and to establish Salat in congregation. As a result our will be populated, Salat centers will be populated, they will also be gathering the blessings of Allah, and, with this practical example, they will train the members of the Community, and will inherit the blessings of Allah, and their tasks will be made easier. They will not be just talkers. Thus, workers should first examine themselves as to what extent their word and action are the same. Allah says, O ye who believe! why do you say what you do not do? (61:3) The Promised Messiahas says, this verse tells us that in the world there were, are and will be the ones who said but did not do it themselves. Remember what I say and keep it with you that if the discourse of a person is not with a true heart and it does not have the practical power of compliance with it, it does not have any effect. Remember, eloquence and oratory alone cannot be of use until it is accompanied by compliance. Words alone do not have any value before Allah. Promised Messiahas in accordance with this directive from Allah, explained clearly, that there should be no contradiction between our word and action. Our office bearers should evaluate themselves keeping these directives before them. Salat centers can be arranged at homes where distances are large or there are only a few homes and there is no facility of or center. Practically it is not difficult. Many Ahmadis already do this. They do not have any assigned responsibility, they are not Aamilah members but they gather members from around them and arrange congregational Prayers. If there is consciousness, everything can be accomplished. Every office-holder should have consciousness of the importance of congregational Prayers otherwise they will not be discharging the rights of trusts. The Holy Qur’an has brought this up time and again. Officer-holders should always keep this matter before them that Allah has pointed out this as the sign of the true believers; that they mind their trusts and their commitments and they guard them. They are vigilant that there is no deficiency or laxness on their part with regard to the trusts assigned to them and the commitment they have made for their service to the Jama’at, because this is not an insignificant matter. Allah has also said in the Holy Qur’an, ... the covenant shall be questioned about. (17:35) Worship is a fundamental matter and is the purpose of the creation of man. We have to discharge this right. There should be no laxity in the officer-holders in this respect and not even from any believer. There are other matters too which office-holders should especially attend to, which concern the rights of office- holders and their attitude towards Jama’at members. These matters also concern the office-holders pledges. No officer is appointed to a service with the view of becoming an officer, rather in Islam the concept of an office bearer is quite different. The Holy Prophet has explained it so, "the leader of a people is their servant."

7 of 52 Lajna Matters 3rd Quarter Issue, 2016

For an office bearer to discharge his trust with respect to people by being a servant to the nation. This condition is created in man when he has the spirit of sacrifice in him. He is humble and meek. The standard of his patience is higher than others. Sometimes office bearers have to hear adverse comments. If they have to hear, they should. The office bearers can evaluate their own selves regarding the level of their forbearance. What is the extent of their humility? Sometimes the matters of such office bearers come up who do not have any forbearance and if the other is being impertinent, they also become brash. If an ordinary person is impertinent, it does not make any difference to him. It would be said that his manners are low. But when unseemly words come out of an office bearer, it affects the respect and stature of the office-holder as well as the members of the Jama'at. Our Community should have and the standard at which the Promised Messiahas wants to see us, that even one such example anywhere is and can be a cause of the defamation of the Community. We find such examples at some places. Quarrels even start in mosques. These matters adversely affect both children and youth. What does Allah desire of us, and how has Allah mentioned the ones who establish standards of sacrifice? At one place He said, … [they] prefer the Refugees [brothers in faith] to themselves (59:10). The Ansar (hosts in Medina) established this example for the Muhajirin (immigrants from Mecca). And this is an example for us. To prefer someone over one's own self is a higher level and is a great accomplishment. Sometimes even the right of someone is not fulfilled adequately. Some matters come to office bearers or some matters are sent from international headquarters for investigative report. The report is prepared carelessly, without investigating the matter properly. Or the matter is delayed so much that if someone's need is to be met, the needy is hurt or has to face hardship. Some office bearers present the excuse of being busy. Some do not have any excuse. It is only not paying attention. If it is their own issue or the issue of someone close to them, the priorities are different. Passion for true service, passion for sacrifice, to discharge the right of trust adequately is to be helpful to the other with a concerned worry. When a service is rendered with the spirit of sacrifice, and considering the difficulty of the other as one's own, the level of sacrifice from the members of the Community will also increase. Attention should be given to discharge the rights of others rather than to usurp them. We say in front of others that peace can be established in the world when at every level rather than assuring our own right and not giving the rights of others, the passion to assure the rights of others and the passion of sacrifice is created. If we do not have this standard among ourselves then we will be doing something, which Allah does not like. An attribute, which should especially be present among office bearers is humility. Allah has pointed out this as the sign of Servants of the Gracious, … walk on the earth in a dignified manner ... (25:64) Our office bearers should have a high example of humility in them. The higher the office the greater the humility should be evident combined with the passion of service when meeting people. This is being noble. People see and feel how the behaviors of the office bearers are. Sometimes people write to me too that such was the behavior of an office bearer and I was very pleased today that he not only greeted me but also inquired about my circumstances and he met me with fine conduct and I was happy to observe his demeanor and his greatness manifested from his behavior. The majority of the members of the Community is such that they become ready for every sacrifice being pleased with the love, softness, and good manners of the office bearers. If any kind of feeling of superiority or haughtiness arises in the heart of an office bearer, he should realize that it distances him from Allah. When man is distanced from God, no blessing remains in his work. The work of faith is only for the pleasure of Allah, and when there is no pleasure of Allah then such a person becomes a source of damage for the

Lajna Matters 3rd Quarter Issue, 2016 8 of 52

Community rather than a source of benefit. The office bearers should always evaluate themselves in this respect as to whether they have humility or not, and if it is there then to what extent? The Holy Prophet said that the more a person adopts humility Allah bestows on him a higher stature proportionately. Every office bearer should remember that if Allah has given him the opportunity to serve the Community, it is a favor of Allah and gratitude to the favor fosters further humility and meekness in him. If humility and meekness do not increase then gratitude to Allah does not take place. It is seen often that when some people meet in ordinary circumstances they show great humility. They meet people in a befitting manner, but when they have difference of opinion with a subordinate or with an ordinary person then instantly their official attitude wakes up and shows the attitude of superiority and haughty behavior before the subordinate. Humility is not that it is shown so long as there is agreement and not when there is disagreement. This is artificial humility. The reality appears when there is difference of opinion or the worker speaks against speculation then a decision be made after evaluating the opinion adequately being firm on justice. With this kind of humility, big heartedness will also become apparent. When it will be so then this humility will be known as real humility. An office bearer should always keep this directive of Allah in front of him: And turn not thy cheek away from men in pride nor walk in the earth haughtily... (31:19) I have mentioned difference in opinion. Although the rules allow the Amir to sometimes reject the consensus of the Aamilah and decide according to his own opinion, he should always make an effort to go forward along with everyone so that decisions are made and work is carried out with consultation and with the majority opinion. At some places, Amirs start using this right more than necessary. This right should be used in extreme needs where it is known that the benefit of the Community lies otherwise and then the matter should be clarified to the Aamilah. A deviation from majority opinion should be in view of the larger interest of the Community. For this Allah's help should be sought with Prayer. Do not depend only on your judgment. It should be noted that this right is not for the National or Local presidents that they reject the opinion of the executive and decide according to their own opinion. To understand the limits of one's rights, it is important for the office bearers to read and understand the rules and regulations. If they follow the rules and regulations then small matters will not become a concern for the Aamilah members or the general membership. Another quality of the office bearers should be that they treat their subordinates with favor. Most of the work of the Community is voluntary. Members of the community give time. They give time to the work of the Community to gain the pleasure of Allah. They give time because they have a relation with and love for the Community. The office bearers should have regard for the feelings of the subordinates and should treat them favorably. This is exactly the directive of Allah. With this favor an effort should be made to train the subordinates and assistants so that workers are at hand always to run the work of the Community. Allah runs the work of Jama'at, there is no doubt, but if the Office Bearers who have experience prepare a secondary line of workers, they will gain the blessings of this effort too. With the Grace of Allah neither I, nor the previous Khulafa, were concerned about how the Community work will be done. This is a promise of Allah to the Promised Messiahas. He will continue to provide sincere workers. An officer during the time of the third Khalifa of the Promised Messiahas thought that the financial system was working admirably due to his work and effort. When Khalifatul-Masih III came to know, he appointed a person for this work who did not know even the basics of finance. Because this work of Allah, and because of the special care of the Khalifa by Allah, such blessings came to the work of the new person that nothing like that was even imagined before that. Thus, office bearers are provided an opportunity by Allah. Allah provides an opportunity to the workers of the Community; Allah provides opportunity to the life-devotees that by serving the Community and faith they gain the blessings of Allah, otherwise Allah Himself is carrying out the work and it is His promise. Therefore, this should not be in any one's heart that his experience or his knowledge is

9 of 52 Lajna Matters 3rd Quarter Issue, 2016

making or can make the work of the Community progress. It is the blessing of Allah, which is carrying out the work of the Community. Many of our weaknesses and deficiencies are such that if it were worldly work, there could not be any blessing, no good results would come about, but Allah covers up and helps Himself with His angels. As an example, for the tasks of Tabligh in the West, Allah has provided such workers who are raised here in these countries, who sought knowledge by their own selves and then they respond to opponents so that it surprises them. There are many such youth that due to their rejoinders the opponents do not have any way out but to run. Thus the office bearers should take the opportunity to serve as a favor of Allah and not due to their experience, expertise or capabilities. Another hallmark office bearers should have is pleasantness and presenting good manners. Allah says, … and speak to men kindly... (2:84) That is, deal and converse with people with softness and good manners. This is a fundamental virtue, which should be prevalent among office-holders. Superior manners should be exhibited whenever conversing with subordinates, coworkers or others. For the sake of organizational matters, sometimes it becomes necessary to express oneself firmly but this necessity is the last resort. If one is advised with love and the office bearers are conscientious that they are their well-wishers then 99% of the people are such that they will comprehend and become inclined to cooperate with the Community because they have a connection with the Community. The greatest, most important condition is that this perception be generated among people or that people have this perception that office bearers are their beneficiaries. Talk softly with people. At a mistake, do not grip in such a way at the outset that the other does not get adequate chance to explain himself. But the ones who are habitual, indulge repeatedly, and try to create disorder and conflict in every matter, they need to be dealt with firmly but there should be complete investigation into these situations. The firmness should not lead to personal enmity but rather should be for reformation. One time the Holy Prophet advised his governor of Yemen: Create ease for people not difficulties, spread love and happiness, do not allow hate to sprout. This is an advice that creates beauty in the relation among the office bearers and members. As a result, the spirit of caring for each other's feelings is created among members also. The Aamilah Members have a great responsibility, especially Amirs, Presidents, Tarbiyyat departments and the institutions that judge. They must think of ways to make things easier for people. It should also be kept in mind that these ways are to be adopted while staying within the limits of the directives of Allah, and not like worldly people that we forget the directives of Allah to create ease for people. Keeping within the limits of Shariah, keeping the pleasure of Allah supreme, we have to give rights of people and also have to guard our pledges and trusts. As I said, every member should look at the book of rules and regulations and should gain knowledge of the responsibilities of their departments. Everyone should know their limits. Sometimes office bearers do not even know their limitations. One department is engaged in an activity while that activity is listed under another department. Sometimes there is such a fine difference in activities that without realizing it two departments are intruding in each other's responsibilities. Recently I had a meeting with the Majlis-e- Aamilah of UK. There I felt that due to not understanding this fine difference, unnecessary discussion starts. If we read the regulations then time would not be wasted in this manner. As an example, the Tabligh department is to conduct outreach activity and also to make contacts. Outreach will spread through contacts. Umur Kharijiyya (Public Affairs) also has to make contacts and also has to introduce the Community. The circle of activity of both is exclusive. One has to do so for the purpose of outreach and the other has to do it for public relations, to increase relations. The real purpose is to introduce the Community and to introduce faith so that by bringing the world to God we try to straighten their end and also to bring attention to the peace situation in the world. Our purpose is not to get credit in a worldly way. The real purpose is to please God and to attain His pleasure. If departments work in

Lajna Matters 3rd Quarter Issue, 2016 10 of 52

cooperation among themselves the result can be greatly improved. From numerous places, this also is elicited that the budgets of various departments are not determined properly. The budget that has been passed in Shura should be given and the related secretary should have control over its dispensation. It is necessary that the secretary present the annual plan of work in the Aamilah meeting and the expenses conform to the approved plan and the work be reviewed in every executive meeting. If there is a need to change the work plan or its budget or there is an opportunity to make it better then that should be reviewed again. It is also an important responsibility of Amirs and Presidents and Secretaries that they act immediately and with full attention on the circulars and directives received from international headquarters (Markaz). Complaints are received about some Jama'ats that adequate action is not taken on directives from Markaz. If due to the conditions in a country or chapter, an entity has protections even then immediately a request should be made to request changes in the requirements of the directive; this is the responsibility of the Amir or President or Sadr. It is not appropriate at all that using one's own reasoning, the directive is put aside and ignored and is not acted upon and Markaz is not informed. Any such audacity by any Amir or President will be taken as avoiding Markaz and Markaz can take action in this respect. With regard to the Moosees, the first thing I want to say is that it is the responsibility of the Moosee to make regular payments and to keep his own account of his contributions but it is also the responsibility of the international office and related secretaries that they keep a complete account of every Moosee and remind them when necessary about the condition of their accounts. It is the responsibility of National Secretaries to activate local secretaries to have contact with every Moosee. It is sometimes observed when a report is requested of a person and the person is a Moosee, it is mentioned in the report that he has not paid his dues since such a time. Then it is asked that if the dues are not paid then how is the Wasiyyat in place? Then on investigation it is discovered that it was not the fault of the Moosee. He had paid his dues but the office did not keep adequate records. Firstly, such a report causes unwarranted distraction for the Moosee. Secondly, the weakness of the system of Jama'at leaves a bad impression. Now there is a solid systematic arrangement. Everything is on computer and all such mistakes should not take place. The Wasiyyat and finance secretaries in every country should activate Wasiyyat and finance secretaries of every chapter. This also is the responsibility of Amirs that they review this matter from time to time. Their job is not just to collect dues and report but it also is the job of Amirs to make this system trustworthy and to establish strong communications between the Markaz and local levels. I also want to say something concerning missionaries and Murabbis. In some places a regular monthly meeting of missionaries and trainers is not held. Missionary-in-charge is responsible that these meetings are held regularly. Tabligh and Tarbiyyat work should be reviewed, notable accomplishments should be discussed, and the rest should try to take advantage of the methods used in the notable work. Reports should be given about the directives of secretaries to chapters from themselves or from Markaz. Murabbis should also look at how much work has been done in each chapter in this respect and where the secretaries are not active, especially in Tabligh, Tarbiyyat and financial matters, the missionaries and Murabbis should bring these matters to [relevant authority's] attention. May Allah give opportunity to all office bearers that during the next three years Allah has given to them to serve they can show utmost performance using all their capabilities and be an example in the Community with their every word and action, Ameen.

Tarbiyyat Matters

The 7th and 8th Conditions of Bai'at state: 7th Condition - That he/she shall entirely give up pride and vanity and shall pass all his /her life in humbleness, cheerfulness, forbearance and meekness. 8th Condition - That he/she shall hold faith, the honor of faith and the cause of Islam dearer than his/her life, wealth, honor, children, and all loved ones. The basic requirement to fulfill both these Conditions of Bai'at is devotion to Allah Ta'ala. Only when a person is devoted to His Creator and wishes to please him above all, can he or she develop the obedience to Allah’s commands that is necessary to be able make the sacrifices needed to fulfill these conditions. These conditions call for deep sacrifices of self and ego that are not always easy to do, but keeping the following story in mind may help. A sinner who wished to reform himself came to a wise man to ask his advice. The sinner said to the wise man, “I am unable to control myself from doing sinful acts. Help me to become obedient to Allah Ta'ala.” The wise man said, “I can help you overcome your disobedience but you must accept five conditions.” The sinner eagerly agreed, “Just tell me what they are!” The wise man said, “The first is that when you want to disobey Allah, you do not eat anything that He provides.” "Then how will I get anything to eat? Everything on the earth is from Him!" "So is it right to eat His provisions and disobey Him at the same time?" replied the wise man. "No, it is not. What is the second condition?" asked the man. "When you want to disobey him, move off His land." "That is even more difficult!” exclaimed the man. "In that case where will I live?" "Is it right to eat his provisions and live on His land and then to disobey Him?" asked the wise man. "No, it is not." "What is the third condition?" "When you want to disobey Him, in spite of eating His provision and living on His land, find a place where He will not see you and disobey Him there." "What do you mean? He knows everything that happens even in the most hidden places!" The wise man asked, "So is it right to disobey Him when you eat His provision and live on His land and when you know that He can see everything you do?" "It certainly is not!" the man replied. "Tell me the fourth condition." The wise man replied, "That when the Angel of Death arrives to take your soul, you say to him, 'Give me a reprieve so that I can repent and act righteously for Allah.'" "But he won't listen to me!" cried the man. "Then if you cannot ward off death long enough to give yourself time to repent, and you know that when it comes there will be no reprieve, how can you hope to be saved?" was the answer. "What is the fifth?" "That when the angels of the Fire come to you to take you to the Fire, you do not go with them." "They will take me whether I like it or not!" exclaimed the man.

15 of 52 Lajna Matters 3rd Quarter Issue, 2016

"So how can you hope to be saved?" asked the wise man. "Enough, enough! I ask Allah's forgiveness and I turn to Him!" cried the sinner. The man's repentance was sincere and from that time on he was diligent in his worship and avoided acts of disobedience until the day he died. May Allah enable us all to avoid any kind of disobedience and turn to Him in repentance, Ameen. Aziza Rahman, National Secretary Tarbiyyat

Tabligh Matters

“Every Ahmadi must begin the task of Dawat’iIallah with serious prayers and make it compulsory for himself to pray all five times. He should entreat God to give him the capacity to fulfill his responsibilities and become Dai’lillah in the eyes of God (Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmadrh, March 4, 1983). In 2010 Khalifatul Masih Vatba, in a letter to Lajna Sadr USA, stated; “Lajna should have targets for Tabligh and work on them, go from towns to small places, make contacts with ladies and students to organize programs and hold seminars; while observing proper purdah, go in groups to do Tabligh.” In the months of April through June 2016 the national Lajna Tabligh program reflected this objective of Khalifatul Masih Vatba by indicating that our Tabligh goal for this quarter was to promote modesty and purdah as we went about performing Tabligh in small groups. Some of our activities centered on the topic “The liberation of women” and other Islamic themes during the month of Ramadhan. Some chapter highlights from April, May and June 2016 are detailed below. Brooklyn/Staten Island, NY Members from the Caribbean American Church of Bronx attended an Iftari at the Baitul Tahir Mosque in June. The guests were introduced to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, broke the fast with the Lajna and Nasirat members, and enjoyed a delicious dinner. The Lajna and Nasirat members conversed with the female guests and answered questions about Islam and Ahmadiyyat. The church members enjoyed their visit and hoped to visit again. Buffalo, NY Lajna members held their 9th annual seminar at St. Joseph’s University Church on May 14, 2016. National Honorary member, Dr Shanaz Butt, gave the address on Mother Mary in the Holy Qur’an, which was very well received. Alhamdulillah approximately 130 guests attended! Guests were from various denominations and fields of religious education, as well as pastors, teachers, doctors and professors. Twenty-seven copies of the Holy Qur’an were distributed, Alhamdulillah! A few guest comments were: What I learned in 45 minutes today about Islam cleared up many misunderstandings of the past few years. Please continue with these events. I hope you can do these events in other churches as well. Hospitality was outstanding. This is my third event at your seminars and I have learned so much. This was excellent, a very good presentation. Thank you for your efforts, I look forward to future events.

Miami, FL On May 17, the Lajna members had the opportunity to host their first ever, women only Tabligh event, titled, Prophet Muhammadsaw: Liberator for Women. Twelve guests and thirty Lajna members attended the event. Seven of the guests were from the Temple Israel of Greater Miami (A local Jewish Society).

Central New Jersey Lajna members invited several non-Ahmadi guests to join them for Iftari during the month of Ramadhan in June 2016 to learn about it. Fourteen non-Muslim women attended Iftaaris through- out the month. One lady from the Reformed Church of Highland Park was particularly impressed with a recited and asked for a copy of it. Shura Proposal Update: True Sisterhood “Hold fast, all together, by the rope of Allah and be not divided…” (3:104). Lajna Imai’llah USA is blessed with members from many diverse ethnicities, which also create challenges for us to function as a unified body. In year 2015, a Shura proposal was presented and later began to be implemented to address our shortcomings and communal ills. The Shura committee and subcommittee identified characteristics that alien- ate and cause division among our Ahmadi sisters. Our beloved Khalifatul Masih Vatba had asked us to address; “What measures can be taken to improve the conduct of Ahmadi women according to the teachings of Islam?” During the first quarter implementation, local Sadran and Lajna members took a survey to identify shortcomings in the Lajna Majlis and themselves. Then they conducted various activities recommended by the Shura subcommittee to “engage in self work i.e. Jihad Akbar” to change undesirable conduct.

Alhamdulillah, Lajna Ima’illah USA is actively engaged in working toward removing poor conduct that is seen as prejudices, feelings of superiority, quarrels, alienation, clique formation, and backbiting. To remove these shortcomings and prevent communal ills Khalifatul Masih Vatba in his February 13, 2015 Friday sermon on the Essence of Conscious Nation Building stated: “An individual can correct himself but the entire community needs to reflect and make effort for communal reformation. While it is important for individuals to self-reflect, it is also important to reflect on communal shortcomings and rectify them. There can be no success without collective remedy!” Therefore, Lajna members should remember to greet each other cheerfully with Assalamo Alaikum, be forgiving of each other, practice humility , make sacrifices for your Ahmadi sisters, focus on commonalities, remember each other in your prayers and emulate the examples of the Holy Prophet Muhammadsaw with respect to kindness to guests, companions and fellow beings. Through practicing Islam and embracing our faith we can overcome our challenges, promote love for one another and stand shoulder to shoulder in unity starting with our prayers for developing True Sisterhood, Ameen.

Media Watch Matters

Members of Lajna Media Watch have been vigilant about the coverage of Islam in the media. Unfortunately ISIS is still making headlines and atrocities in the name of Islam are being carried out in Europe and most recently in the US. Though the largest numbers of victims of terrorism are Muslims, the media only highlight such terror incidents attributed to ISIS when they take place in Europe or America. In March, ISIS claimed its attack in Brussels, which resulted in the death of 32 people while injuring more than 200. In June, a man who said that ISIS inspired him went on a shooting rampage at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida. A man driving a truck ploughed through a crowd in Nice, France where the Bastille Day celebration was underway. Deadly suicide attacks took place at the Istanbul Airport in June killing at least 44 people. These horrible acts of violence are continuing to take place across the world. As instructed more than a century ago by the Promised Messiah, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas, Lajna Media Watch has been defending Islam through discourse and reason. Our writers are valiantly fighting the wave of anti-Islam rhetoric and standing up for true Islam through letters and Op-eds. Here are some examples of the daunting task taken up by our talented soldiers of Islam:

West Midwest Regional Tarbiyyat Camp – I am Ahmadi

By the Grace of Allah, the 2016 Regional Tarbiyyat Camp for lajna 15-25 took place at Qamar Mosque in Oshkosh and then at the Breezy Hill Campgrounds in Fond du Lac in April, and was a great success. The highest attendance was on Saturday with 29 members from Bloomington, Chicago SW, Milwaukee, Oshkosh, and Zion Majalis. The camp began on Friday evening with registration and refreshments. The Regional Sadr, Samina Ijaz Sahiba, gave a welcome address and then the girls participated in an icebreaker activity where they were assigned a partner and learned interesting facts about each other. Oshkosh and Milwaukee Lajna members conducted a workshop on True Sisterhood and Good Conduct. There was a lively discussion on this topic, with the youth acknowledging the barriers that we face.

The second day Zion Lajna presented a workshop on Passion for Service to Jama’at. The girls were divided into groups in a circle and various scenarios were read out. The group had to decide if this scenario brought them closer or further to the Jama’at. This activity was used as a metaphor: as you go to Jama’at events you become connected with other Ahmadis by the rope of Allah.

After the presentation the girls headed to the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store in Oshkosh to volunteer. Everyone worked hard at various assigned tasks for about an hour and half and then headed back to the Mosque. Before lunch we had a small talent show where a few girls shared their skills in photography and poetry.

In the afternoon, the girls went to the campground for the remainder of the camp and settled in. There were games and activities at the camp while others did Henna designs on each other until we wrapped up the conference room and headed to the cabins for the night.

The next day, they took part in a Jeopardy quiz prepared by Lajna Bloomington on the book Our Teachings by The Promised Messiah as. Chicago Southwest girls gave an interactive power point presentation on the Importance of Nizame-Jama’at. Everyone realized how the Jama’at is a source of blessings and inspiration for us, and how we can use the system of Nizame-Jama’at in our daily lives. Then they made s’mores and roasted marshmallows around a campfire, which the girls loved and really bonded with each other.

The session concluded with a certificate ceremony, closing remarks and Dua by Regional Sadr Sahiba. Lajna Osh- kosh prepared lunch boxes for everyone and Oshkosh Nasirat baked cookies for the campers. Alhamdulillah, the camp was very successful and we were all most grateful for this first outdoors camping trip. May Allah always keep us strong in faith and sincerely connected to Jama’at Ahmadiyya, Ameen!

The girls played a fun icebreaker game to get to know each other. National Secretary Tarbiyyat, Aziza Rehman Sahiba, gave an informative workshop on modesty and purdah, which was followed by a lively question and answer session on the subject. Next came a workshop that involved teamwork and problem solving. They were then to think of two problems in the real world, which if eliminated would lead to an ideal society. The girls were to come up with a game plan of how to solve these two problems. They talked about poverty, racism, education, and cyber bullying. The solutions that they offered were Ahmadiyyat, Tabligh, volunteering, equality, and respect. After the workshops girls played an intense game of basketball in the court. On Saturday the girls got ready for their field trip to Big Bear. It was a very scenic site with beautiful serene mountains in the background. Their activities included hiking, canoeing, archery, and rock climbing. The girls observed modesty and purdah while enjoying a day of outdoor fun that further enhanced their goal of building lifelong relationships. They enjoyed a healthy nutritious meal in a picnic setting, then gathered round for a small interactive quiz style workshop on the book, Our Teaching. The workshop was followed by storytelling. They listened intently to inspirational stories from the history of Islam and life of Holy Prophet Muhammadsaw. On Sunday, we had an interactive workshop titled “How to spread True Islam in the West.” The latest campaign “True Islam and the Extremists” was explained in detail to the girls, who then divided into groups to discuss and create a tabligh scenario concerning challenges in school, and the workplace. The last workshop of the camp raised the subject of contemporary issues and how to protect our community from social ills. The girls engaged in an important conversation on how to deal with challenges that they face in their day-to-day lives. The friendship camp was very successful, Alhamdulillah. The girls also learned about the benefits of composting and how compost helps the growth of many of the foods used at The Juice Kitchen and by families in the neighborhood. Visiting with and listening to a member of the Walnut Way Conservation Corporation speak about the importance of having a positive connection with your community.
