The combination of the north loop of the Nür- burgring with the Grand Prix course produces the rammed in world’s longest and most difficult circuit. With more than 70 bends over a distance of 25 kilometers and the race extreme weather conditions, this race was one of the most demanding in the Nürburgring’s history.

Despite being in 41st position in the starting line-up in a field of 218 participants contesting the 35th running of this race, Team Carlsson was aiming for a tenth- placed finish. The combination of different racing stra- tegies and the performance of Ingvar Carlsson, twice winner of the World Rally Championship, allowed the team to move up the overall standings.

With a third of the race gone, Rainer Brückner took to the wheel. When the team was in 13th place in the overall standings and second in its class, a latecomer rammed the SLK, which then smashed through the safety barrier at a speed of more than 160 km/h. Hap- pily, the driver emerged uninjured from the car thanks to the robustness and reliability of the Mercedes.

The winner of the Paris-Dakar Rally, the celebrated driver Jutta Kleinschmidt, has signed up with the FUCHS GT1 Racing Team B in order to participate in the 24-hour race. Bolstered by the recruitment of this very experienced driver, the team is now hoping for a podium finish.

However, a combination of bad luck and problems forced the FUCHS GT1 Racing Team to slow down the pace. As a result of a problem which was difficult to solve, the team did everything in its power to cross the finish line despite several pit stops being required. Marc Hiltscher: “We had technical problems. Despite replacing several electro- nic and mechanical modules, such as the turbo at three o’clock in the morning, the car kept coming to a standstill. We sought advice from two BWM engineers, but they were unable to get to the bottom of the problem either.” At the end of the 24-hour race, the team of Olaf Manthey at the wheel of a Porsche 911 GT3 RSR repeated its per- formances of 2006 and claimed the title for the second time in a row.
