RONCALLI • SACRED HEART CENTRAL • CHARTRAND • KENNEDY MEMORIAL THE LAST WORD Thoughts from the Principal Chuck Weisenbach R’79, Principal

Before I move into the focus of my article for this edition of The Update, let me extend another BIG thank you to all of our students, teachers, parents and guardians! As we close in on the finish of this unprecedented 2020-21 school year, I could not be more proud of the work done and the resilience shown by our students and teachers this year! Amidst this pandemic and all the challenges that came with it, no school in the state of Indiana has done a better job providing its students a high-quality education on a consistent basis than Roncalli. Hail to our students and teachers - Well done! This will be the final time I will write an article for The Update while in the position as principal as I will assume my duties as president on July 1, 2021. As this edition of The Update finds its way into homes, we will be putting the finishing touches on this school year, and I will be wrapping up my 26th year as principal. Before settling into my position as president on 46 July 1, I wanted to share my thoughts on aspects of the principal’s position that I will most miss.

Observing teachers and classrooms Given that I was completing teacher observations in my role as assistant principal prior to being the principal, I have been in classrooms observing our teachers and classes for over 30 years. Annually, I typically complete over 120 observations. These observations have been the source of so much learning on my part; learning from our teachers about curriculum and what great teaching looks like; learning from our students what leads to dynamic engagement in a classroom. I am going to miss being in the classroom “where rubber literally meets the road.”

Working with our department chairpersons Each of our academic departments has either a chairperson or co-chairpersons. Each of them is responsible for overseeing the curriculum in their respective department while also assisting the administration with the supervision of teachers within their department. Roncalli has experienced growth in so many different ways over the last 25 years but the growth in excellence in our academic programming is near the top of that list. For many years now the department chairpersons have been the catalyst and continued driving force in creating this level of excellence. I will be forever grateful to all of the teachers who have filled the role of department chairpersons during my tenure as principal.

UPDATE MAGAZINE SPRING 2021 Daily announcements I am not sure when doing daily announcements moved from being a daily task to something I thoroughly enjoyed? For many, many years I have loved extending happy birthday wishes to our students, faculty and staff, bragging about our seniors of the week, encouraging students to get out and watch their peers in an upcoming concert or theatrical performance and of course announcing the latest “swwweeeeeep” by a Royal athletic team. Maybe the new principal will let me “sub” in on occasion as I will really, really miss those 15 minutes each day!

Interviewing prospective teachers Few things have brought me more enjoyment than meeting all of the prospective candidates for our teaching positions. Some of those candidates ended up being teachers at Roncalli. Some did not. Regardless, I found so much about the interview process to be uplifting and enlightening because of the many interesting people I met with interesting life stories. 47

There is so much about the principal’s work that I love, enjoy and will miss. But, there is so much about the president’s work that I am excited and enthused about. I will be writing about that in the next issue of The Update! In the meantime, please join me in praying for the Holy Spirit to guide the process of identifying the next principal for Roncalli High School!
