VOL. 57, NO. 11 DIOCESE OF OAKLAND JUNE 10, 2019 www.catholicvoiceoakland.org Serving the East Bay Catholic Community since 1963 Copyright 2019 Three priests ordained for the Diocese of Oakland By Michele Jurich Staff writer Addressing the three men before him, “Soon-to-be Father Mark, Father John and Father Javier,” Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, told them, “you are called and chosen” and told them what serving means today. In front of a crowded Cathedral of Christ the Light Bishop Barber told them he was zeroing in on the third vow they would take shortly, to celebrate the Mass and administer the Sacrament of Confession worthily. “You will never violate the Seal of Confession,” Bishop Barber told the three new priests. “No state or government can oblige you to betray your penitents.” Legislation — SB 360 — has passed the state Senate and is moving to the Assembly. It will compel a priest to reveal to police some sins he hears in confession. The new priests, John Anthony Pietruszka, 32, Javier Ramirez, 43, and Mark Ruiz, 56, listened attentively. Father Pietruszka is from Fall River Massachusetts; Father Ramirez from Culiacán, Sinaloa, ; and Mark Father Ruiz was born and raised in Oakland. They would not be alone, the bishop assured them.

JUNE 10, 2019 THE CATHOLIC VOICE — 3 ‘Never betray your penitents,’ bishop warns new priests [This was Bishop Barber’s homily from the Ordination to the Priesthood Mass on May 31. See more on Pages 1, 10.]

By Most Rev. Michael C. Barber, SJ Father Javier, Father Mark, and Father John, you have not had a straight and easy path to the altar tonight. Each of your vocation stories has had twists and turns, on and offs, marching forward and in reverse. All the more can we say with Jeremiah the prophet tonight: You have been called and chosen. You’ve been called and chosen for what? You’ve been called Bishop Barber and chosen to serve as a priest of Jesus Christ. What does to serve mean? We find the answer in “Promise No. 3” of the sacred promises you will make in a few minutes as part of the Ordination ritual. I will ask you “Do you resolve to celebrate faithfully and reverently, in accord with the Church’s tradition, the mysteries of Christ, especially the sacrifice of the Eucharist and the sacrament of Reconciliation, for the glory of God and the sanctification of the Christian people?” You are promising to celebrate Mass and the Sacrament of Confession in accord with the Church’s tradition. The two weekend days of playoff preliminary rounds ended with two evenings of close final games at Moreau Catholic High School, Hayward, for two teams in each grade, fourth through eighth. Adding to the excitement of the finals, three of the five final games were decided by four points or fewer, no team had a “repeat” from the previous year and one team gained a first-ever girls’ bas- ketball championship for their Catholic school. In the eighth grade championship, last year’s diocesan champion, St John, San Lorenzo, tipped off against St. Joseph, Pinole. St. John had earned its way to the cham- pionship game with a come-from-behind victory in semi- finals over St. Anne, Union City, 46-44. In the championship game, St. Joseph went ahead early and it became another St. John’s opportunity for a come-from-behind win. The team consists of three veteran seniors and nine new to this level of competition. We were booked to fly out of Oakland on Feb. 21 and while waiting in the air- port it was announced that all flights to Las Vegas were cancelled due to snow — it has not snowed in Las Vegas in 10 years. The coaches and I sprung into action to find a viable alternative to transport the team in time for competition. We ended up having to fly to Ontario airport and drive the rest of the way to Las Vegas. It was not an easy drive, we had snow, we had rain and we had fog and slow traffic. We arrived in Las Vegas at 12:30 a.m. the morning of competition tired but safe. Their first performance was Show Cheer at 8:24 p.m. where we competed against seven other schools. Show Cheer is scored 35 percent the first day and 65 percent the second day. They scored in third place on that Friday and the score sheets have to be analyzed and the team works on improvements for

the next day’s performance. VOICE DENNIS THE MOCKEL/SPECIAL TO CATHOLIC Second day competition began at 12:07 p.m. for The Dragon cheer team also placed third nationally in the Show Cheer category. When they hit the competition floor it was like the to wait until 7 p.m. for the award ceremony to begin and Holy Spirit had entered into them, and they all lit up and I can’t tell you if I’ve ever prayed so hard. KRISTINE WILLIAMS/SPECIAL TO THE CATHOLIC VOICE THE KRISTINE WILLIAMS/SPECIAL TO CATHOLIC Ignatius). Records set at annual diocesan Championship Track and Field Meet By Bill Ford Special to The Catholic Voice At any sports event, there is talk among those present anticipating great performances by the athletes. The 2019 Oakland Diocese Championship Track and Field Meet was no exception as many were waiting for the seventh grade boys’ 800-meter race, featuring Tyler Bergren from St. Perpetua CYO, Lafayette. Tyler had broken the diocesan meet record in that event each year since his third-grade year. Tyler’s run did not disappoint as he easily shattered the seventh-grade record of 2:16.9 with a run of 2:09.1. The “talk of the meet,” however, also came from a pair of third grade girls with dazzling runs in the 200, 400 and 800-meter races. Both were speedsters among other fast runners on the track and off the track they had wide smiles for three record-breaking runs. These two record-breakers were Jordynn Hughes from St. Felicitas, San Leandro, and Mia Monroe from St. Leo the Great School, Oakland.
