HYMN

LL people that on earth do dwell, Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; HAim serve with fear, his praise forth tell, Come ye before him, and rejoice.

The Lord, ye know, is God indeed, Without our aid he did us make; We are his folk, he doth us feed, And for his sheep he doth us take.

O enter then his gates with praise, Approach with joy his courts unto; Praise, laud, and bless his name always, For it is seemly so to do.

For why? the Lord our God is good: His mercy is for ever sure; His truth at all times firmly stood, And shall from age to age endure.

To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, The God whom heaven and earth adore, From men and from the Angel-host Be praise and glory evermore.

Words WILLIAM KETHE (d. 1594 ) Tune Old Hundredth Genevan Psalter 1551

THE BIDDING

E come to this Cathedral today from all parts of this nation to remember before God all Servicemen and women who have served the International Community in Iraq and the Wmany civilians who endure the dangers of conflict in service of others.

We pray especially for all Servicemen and women from the who have lost their lives or who have suffered injury, and with them we remember their families, their colleagues and their friends.

We give thanks for all who work for peace, for freedom, for justice; for the armed services; for the emergency services; for all who carry the burdens of government.

We bring before God in penitence the hatreds of our world, the deep divisions of our humanity and we ask for a new understanding, a new resolve, a new obedience to God’s law of love as we pray for peace.

We pray in particular for Iraq, and for all who work in the face of great danger day by day to establish peace and security and to promote the well-being of all its people.

So we come from many places, from different traditions of faith, to unite in thanksgiving, in remembrance, and in prayer before God, as we say together

UR Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our tOrespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE REVEREND CANON LUCY WINKETT says AY God, who has called us to be kind to one another, tender-hearted and forgiving, pour upon us the riches of love and grace, free us from evil and strengthen us to live in peace wMith all the peoples of the earth. Amen.

Stand HYMN

EAR Lord and Father of mankind, Forgive our foolish ways! DRe-clothe us in our rightful mind, In purer lives thy service find, In deeper reverence praise.

In simple trust like theirs who heard, Beside the Syrian sea, The gracious calling of the Lord, Let us, like them, without a word Rise up and follow thee.

O Sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, Where Jesus knelt to share with thee The silence of eternity, Interpreted by love!

Drop thy still dews of quietness, Till all our strivings cease; Take from our souls the strain and stress, And let our ordered lives confess The beauty of thy peace.

Breathe through the heats of our desire Thy coolness and thy balm; Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still small voice of calm!

THE GIFT OF REMEMBRANCE

LANCE CORPORAL KARL STEVENS , 37 Armoured Engineer Squadron, says

HE stone plaque you see here today is the centrepiece of the Memorial Wall, a Tmonument constructed in 2006, and which stood outside the Headquarters Multi-National Division South East in Basra. The memorial was hung with brass plaques listing the 178 Servicemen and women – and one Ministry of Defence civilian – who lost their lives during Operation T ELIC . It also recognised the contribution of our international colleagues and listed the coalition personnel who were killed in Southern Iraq.

The memorial wall was constructed over one week by a team of bricklayers, all of whom were members of 37 Armoured Engineer Squadron. It was an honour to take part, and to be able to mark the courage and sacrifice of these individuals. Members of that same unit also dismantled the memorial wall following the commemoration service on 30 April this year. It has been transported back to the United Kingdom, where it will be rebuilt and dedicated next year, at the National Memorial Arboretum. This central stone pays tribute to those who fell, but also speaks to all of us who served on , inscribed with lines from the Book of Wisdom: Honourable age does not depend on length of days, nor is the number of years a true measure of life.

Stand as THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY , T HE MOST REVEREND AND RIGHT HONOURABLE DR ROWAN WILLIAMS moves to the stone plaque from the Basra Wall of Remembrance and says

A thousand years in God’s sight are like a single day, like an evening that has already gone.

Christ is the first and the last, the beginning and the end.

You, O Christ, hold the key to God’s way of justice. Open to us your kingdom of peace.

E dedicate this stone plaque to the glory of God and to the abiding memory of those men Wand women from this nation who gave their lives in the service of peace and freedom, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

10 THE GIFT OF HOPE

FIRST LESSON

Ecclesiastes 3.1-8 read by GENERAL SIR PETER WALL KCB CBE Late Corps of Royal Engineers in Chief Land Forces

OR everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven: Fa time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.

ANTHEM

ND I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; Aand there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away.

SECOND LESSON

Ephesians 6.10-17

read by

FLIGHT SERGEANT ANN CARTER MBE RAF Princess Mary’s RAF Nursing Service

E strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against eBnemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

WORSHIP the King All glorious above; Ogratefully sing His power and his love: Our Shield and Defender, The Ancient of days, Pavilioned in splendour, And girded with praise.

O tell of his might, O sing of his grace, Whose canopy space. His chariots of wrath The deep thunder-clouds form, And dark is his path On the wings of the storm.

This earth, with its store Of wonders untold, Almighty, thy power Hath founded of old: Hath stablished it fast By a changeless decree, And round it hath cast, Like a mantle, the sea.
