HYMN LL people that on earth do dwell, Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; HAim serve with fear, his praise forth tell, Come ye before him, and rejoice. The Lord, ye know, is God indeed, Without our aid he did us make; We are his folk, he doth us feed, And for his sheep he doth us take. O enter then his gates with praise, Approach with joy his courts unto; Praise, laud, and bless his name always, For it is seemly so to do. For why? the Lord our God is good: His mercy is for ever sure; His truth at all times firmly stood, And shall from age to age endure. To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, The God whom heaven and earth adore, From men and from the Angel-host Be praise and glory evermore. Words WILLIAM KETHE (d. 1594 ) Tune Old Hundredth Genevan Psalter 1551 5 Remain standing THE DEAN , T HE RIGHT REVEREND GRAEME KNOWLES , gives THE BIDDING E come to this Cathedral today from all parts of this nation to remember before God all Servicemen and women who have served the International Community in Iraq and the mWany civilians who endure the dangers of conflict in service of others. We pray especially for all Servicemen and women from the United Kingdom who have lost their lives or who have suffered injury, and with them we remember their families, their colleagues and their friends. We give thanks for all who work for peace, for freedom, for justice; for the armed services; for the emergency services; for all who carry the burdens of government. We bring before God in penitence the hatreds of our world, the deep divisions of our humanity and we ask for a new understanding, a new resolve, a new obedience to God’s law of love as we pray for peace. We pray in particular for Iraq, and for all who work in the face of great danger day by day to establish peace and security and to promote the well-being of all its people. So we come from many places, from different traditions of faith, to unite in thanksgiving, in remembrance, and in prayer before God, as we say together UR Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our tOrespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Words Penitential Rite Music from Messe de Requiem MAURICE DURUFLÉ (1902-1986) THE REVEREND CANON LUCY WINKETT says AY God, who has called us to be kind to one another, tender-hearted and forgiving, pour upon us the riches of love and grace, free us from evil and strengthen us to live in peace wMith all the peoples of the earth. Amen. Stand HYMN EAR Lord and Father of mankind, Forgive our foolish ways! RDe-clothe us in our rightful mind, In purer lives thy service find, In deeper reverence praise. In simple trust like theirs who heard, Beside the Syrian sea, The gracious calling of the Lord, Let us, like them, without a word Rise up and follow thee. O Sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, Where Jesus knelt to share with thee The silence of eternity, Interpreted by love! Drop thy still dews of quietness, Till all our strivings cease; Take from our souls the strain and stress, And let our ordered lives confess The beauty of thy peace. Breathe through the heats of our desire Thy coolness and thy balm; Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still small voice of calm! Words JOHN WHITTIER (1807-92) Tune Repton C. H UBERT H. P ARRY (1848-1918) 8 Sit THE GIFT OF REMEMBRANCE LANCE CORPORAL KARL STEVENS , 37 Armoured Engineer Squadron, says HE stone plaque you see here today is the centrepiece of the Basra Memorial Wall, a Tmonument constructed in 2006, and which stood outside the Headquarters Multi-National Division South East in Basra. The memorial was hung with brass plaques listing the 178 Servicemen and women – and one Ministry of Defence civilian – who lost their lives during Operation T ELIC . It also recognised the contribution of our international colleagues and listed the coalition personnel who were killed in Southern Iraq. The memorial wall was constructed over one week by a team of bricklayers, all of whom were members of 37 Armoured Engineer Squadron. It was an honour to take part, and to be able to mark the courage and sacrifice of these individuals. Members of that same unit also dismantled the memorial wall following the commemoration service on 30 April this year.
