  • The Crown Prince and the Frog-Prince: Characterisations in the Identity Construction of Firstborn Males
© Psychological Society of South Africa. All rights reserved. South African Journal of Psychology, 40(3), 2010, pp. 282-291 ISSN 0081-2463 The crown prince and the frog-prince: characterisations in the identity construction of firstborn males Gertina J. van Schalkwyk University of Macau, Macau I explore the identity construction and narrative self of firstborn males at the hand of metaphors contained in the well-known fairytale of the “Frog King”. In many societies around the world, the oldest male offspring — the firstborn, lastborn, or single child — confronts a host of legacies, privileges and social structures that lead him to adopt a particular characterisation of self. Using a non-empirical philosophical design, narrative analysis, and a fairytale as metaphoric framework, I analysed the narratives of two firstborn males explicating images of the crown prince and the frog- prince as metaphors for socially organised frameworks of meaning that define categories and specify what constitutes being a firstborn male. I searched for conceptual linkages between the crown prince, the frog-prince and the dominant discourse of patriarchy in identity construction, proposing that his enmeshment in social stereotypes precludes explorations of a multi-faceted, differentiated self and an integrated adaptation to life’s challenges. Keywords: crown prince; fairytale metaphor; firstborn male; frog-prince; male identity; patriarchy; pseudo-identity In ancient times people esteemed able-bodied men who could protect their families and livelihoods against nature and beasts. Notwithstanding economical and political progress — from monarchy to democracy, agrarian to technocratic, battlefield to so-called peaceful negotiations or from emphasis on physical and manual labour to mental enterprise — male privileging has prevailed.

  • View the ANZAC Day 2021 Order of Service
Westminster Abbey A Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving to mark ANZAC Day Sunday 25th April 2021 Noon Crete, 1941. A happy meeting of troops of the Australian Imperial Forces and the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces on the island. 2021 marks the 80th anniversary of the Greece and Crete Campaigns of WW2. Image supplied by the Australian War Memorial. HISTORICAL NOTE This year marks the 106th anniversary of the landings on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 25th April 1915. The Gallipoli campaign exacted a heavy toll on both sides. Some 50,000 Allied troops from the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, France, Newfoundland, and India lost their lives. Including those wounded or evacuated for sickness, the total number of Allied casualties numbered around 250,000. The Turkish forces lost over 86,000 in addition to those wounded. Australian and New Zealand forces fought for the first time under a united command as the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, or, more famously, the ANZACs. Casualties at Gallipoli amounted to almost 9,000 Australians killed and in excess of 19,000 wounded. For New Zealand, near to 3,000 lost their lives and over 5,000 were wounded. These figures do not include those who died as a result of mental trauma in the years following. In both countries, ANZAC Day, 25th April, not only commemorates those first landings at Gallipoli, but also all the Australians and New Zealanders who have served their countries in time of conflict, and especially those who have given their lives in that service. After a year in which we have borne hardships of a very different kind from the sufferings which the ANZACs endured—the shocking effects of the worst global pandemic in a century—we take, as the theme for ANZAC Day 2021, “Remembrance.

  • Introduction to the Royal Mews
Introduction to the Royal Mews The Royal Mews is built around a quadrangle some 50 metres square. It's covered with pink tarmac, with a number of cars, vans or horse boxes parked in the centre. The sides are defined by pale-brick buildings, two-storeys high, with shallow slate roofs. Each has a tall central arch, flanked by classical pillars. In these buildings are stables, equipment or ‘tack’ rooms, coach houses and offices. There's also accommodation for the staff of the Mews – and other Royal Household staff – up on the first floor. It’s a living, working community and the families of some of the staff have worked here for generations. Indeed, Her Majesty The Queen has described the Royal Mews as ‘a small village which belongs to Buckingham Palace’. Today it is the Crown Equerry who runs the Royal Mews, responsible for the staff, the horses and the cars - so pretty much all the ground transport that The Queen and other members of the Royal Family require. Day to day, the Mews routine centres around the care and exercise of the horses and the availability of the cars. Horses exercise in Hyde Park, either under saddle or in harness pulling an exercise carriage. There is also a messenger coach which goes twice daily to Buckingham Palace and St. James’. On some days, two Landaus with the staff in livery and followed by a Semi State car depart to pick up an Ambassador or a High Commissioner to take them to Buckingham Palace for their audience with The Queen.

Mora President, United World College-USA Bring up the name Kurt Hahn in a dinner party conversation about education and you may get blank stares. Mention United World College, or Outward Bound, and a few people may engage. Refer to the Gordonstoun headmaster in the Netflix series The Crown who meted out tough discipline to Prince Philip, and most everybody at the table will have an opinion. Tough English headmasters have a way of crystallizing our views on what makes for good and bad educational practice. Whether we see him as educational muse or unyielding disciplinarian, Kurt Hahn has something important to say to us about the power of education to shape our youth and therefore the world. Kurt Hahn: Visionary Kurt Hahn (1886-1974), a German educational visionary, was himself an unhappy student, put off by a rigid education narrowly focused on preparation for Germany’s final secondary-school exams, the Abitur. As the headmaster of a school he co-founded, he openly defied the Nazi regime and was briefly imprisoned before being forced to leave Germany. He settled in Scotland, where he founded Gordonstoun School, featured in the Netflix series. He went on to found several schools, including the first of 18 United World Colleges that now span the globe. He also co- founded Outward Bound, the global outdoor education network. The schools he established (secondary schools in the UK are typically called colleges while higher education is called university) and Outward Bound had something in common: They were meant to allow young people to find their interests and their passions, to learn by doing rather than by being lectured to, and especially to encounter themselves and one another in nature.
