LAST GAME

Thursday, January 31, 2019 – Flyers 3, Boston 2 (OT) at TD Garden: Travis Sanheim scored 2:56 into overtime on a power play to lift the Flyers to a 3-2, come-from-behind win over the Bruins. David Pastrnak gave Boston a one-goal lead twice, first when he scored on the power play 3:05 into the contest. Claude Giroux got that goal back with just under 44 seconds to go in the frame, and after Pastrnak added his second tally 5:11 into the second, Oskar Lindblom leveled the score on the power play with 9:24 left in the third period. The Flyers went on the power play just under a minute into the overtime session and Sanheim’s blast from the left circle beat Tuukka Rask right before that power play expired. Carter Hart turned away 23 of 25 Boston shots for the win, while Rask made 38 saves on 41 Flyer bids. Stars of the Game: 1 – Travis Sanheim; 2 – David Pastrnak; 3 – Tuukka Rask.

NOTABLES

Travis Sanheim scored the overtime game-winner and added an assist in his 100th NHL game. Sanheim had four shots on goal and was also credited with three blocks.

The Flyers had 41 shots on goal spread among 12 different players. All 12 of those players recorded either three or four shots on goal. The Flyers had 20 shot attempts blocked, but only had six attempts miss the net.

Ivan Provorov played 30:20, a career high. He is the first Flyer to play more than 30 minutes in a game since Michael Del Zotto did it on March 28, 2015. At 22 years and 18 days, he becomes the second-youngest Flyer to play a 30-minute game in the time since the league started tracking time-on-ice in 1997. Alexandre Picard was 21 years, 211 days when he played 32:42 on Feb. 1, 2007 vs. New Jersey. It’s only the 63rd occasion that any NHL player has played 30+ minutes at Provorov’s age or younger since 1997, and he is only the 32nd different individual to do so.

Claude Giroux scored and had six shot attempts, sharing the team lead with Radko Gudas. He went 10-for-15 (67 pct) on faceoffs.

Sean Couturier had an assist, five shot attempts and went 16-for-23 (69.6 pct) on faceoffs.

MILESTONES Gudas – 2 points to reach 100 in the NHL Voracek – 7 goals to reach 200 in the NHL Giroux – 2 games to move into third place in franchise history in games played

Flyers – 2 wins to 2000 in franchise history

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

After playing their first 48 games of the season over the span of 115 days, the Flyers will play their final 34 games over the span of just 76 days in a time period that began with Monday’s return from the bye week. Starting today they’ll play eight of their next 11 contests at home, including the Stadium Series game on February 23.

The Flyers continue to operate as the NHL’s best faceoff team with a 56.4 percent rating. The Flyers have three players above 58 percent on the season:

Claude Giroux – 59.7 pct Scott Laughton – 58.8 pct Sean Couturier – 58.2 pct

Among 121 players that have taken 300 or more faceoffs this year, Giroux leads the league, Laughton is fourth and Couturier is sixth.

The Flyers’ best faceoff season in the 20 seasons since the NHL started tracking the stat was in 1998-99, when they were 55.4 percent on draws as a team. The best team faceoff percentage for an entire campaign was Boston’s 2012-13 season, when they were 56.4 percent in the 48-game shortened season; the best full 82-game season percentage was Carolina’s 2001-02 team, which was 56.1 percent.

The Flyers’ penalty kill has operated at 82.3 percent over the last 30 games (70 for 85). In that timeframe, which is since Thanksgiving, the PK ranks 12th in the NHL. That comes after the PK went 68.5 percent (50 for 73) on the PK in the first 21 games of the season.

Since the start of this winning streak, the Flyers are tied for second in the league with 24 goals. They’ve given up 210 shots, which is tied for second-most in that time, despite having given up the 10th-fewest shots in the league this season prior to this streak.

James van Riemsdyk comes into tonight’s contest with six goals and two assists for eight points in his last six games. He’s scored those six goals on just 17 shots. Prior to this he had just eight goals on 61 shots in nine total games. He’s one of just 10 players in the NHL to have five goals or more since January 14.

Carter Hart was named the NHL’s Rookie of the Month for January yesterday. He went 6-2-1 with a 2.33 goals-against average and .931 save percentage in nine appearances over the course of the month. He led the entire NHL in saves (283) and ranked third in time on ice (540:13) during January, won five straight games to close the month (2.38 GAA, .930 SV%). In doing so, the 20-year-old Sherwood Park, Alta., native became the 10th goaltender in League history to post a five-game winning streak prior to his 21st birthday – and the first to achieve the feat since Carey Price from March 20 – April 5, 2008 (7-0-0 w/ MTL).

Hart has compiled an 8-5-1 record, 2.48 goals-against average and .922 save percentage in 14 total outings since making his League debut with a win Dec. 18 (vs. DET: 20 SV). He joins Vancouver Canucks center Elias Pettersson (October and December) and Dahlin (November) as a Rookie of the Month winner in 2018-19.

Hart is the only goaltender in Flyers history to play more than two games for the team before his 21st birthday. His debut made him the second-youngest goaltender in Flyers history to appear in a game, doing so on Dec. 18 vs. DET at the age of 20 years, 127 days. Only Maxime Ouellet was younger (19 years, 112 days). Hart is the youngest goalie in Flyers history to win a game and was the fifth- youngest in the NHL since 1996-97 to win his debut. He is also the first goalie in NHL history and the first Flyer at any position to wear #79. Should Hart record a sometime in the next 1 ½ years, he will become the youngest Flyer ever to do so. Dominic Roussel currently holds the record at 22 years, five days of age when he made 20 saves in a 3-0 win at Calgary on February 27, 1992.

Anthony Stolarz made 38 saves in Tuesday’s game against the Rangers for his second career shutout. They have both been 1-0 wins. The last occasion was December 11, 2016 at Detroit, which was also the last time any Flyers goaltender had a 1-0 shutout in regulation.

Claude Giroux represented the Flyers at the All Star game, posting a goal and an assist over the two games as the Metropolitan Division won the event for the second time in the last three years. It’s the sixth All-Star nod of his career, making him the first Flyer to do so since Eric Lindros was selected for the Eastern Conference squad in 2000. The Flyers’ franchise record belongs to Bobby Clarke, who was named to 10 mid-season NHL All-Star teams and appeared in nine of those games.

Giroux became just the second player in team history to hit 500 assists when he set up the Flyers’ first goal on Jan. 16 vs. Boston. He had already moved into second place all-time in assists and fourth place all-time in points, reaching both earlier this season.

Ivan Provorov ranks seventh in the league in TOI since January 1 at 26:00 per game. This week he’s played 30:20 in Boston, 26:02 in New York and 28:03 at home vs. Winnipeg on Monday.
