Introduction Pace of play is an important characteristic in ice hockey as well as other team-invasion sports. While in basketball pace has traditionally been defined as the number of possessions per 48 minutes, here we focus on pace and movement within a possession, leveraging the tremendous advancements in the capture of spatio-temporal data in team sports in recent years [1]. While much attention has been focused on speed and distance covered at the player level, spatio-temporal datasets also allow for more granular definitions of team-level pace of play such as measures of the speed between successive events or the speed of a possession as a whole. While ice hockey has always been one of the fastest-moving sports, rule and tactical changes in the past 15 years, such as the removal of the rule limiting 2-line passes and the stricter enforcement of obstruction/holding infractions, have placed further emphasis on pace. At the start of the 2016-17 NHL season, Paul Maurice, head coach of the Winnipeg Jets said: "This game is just so fast now... I've seen fast players and I've seen fast teams, it's the first time I thought we had a fast league. The speed, to me, is the one thing that’s changed more than anything. None of that mattered Wednesday as the modern-day stars of the Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton Oilers traded chances for much of the night in a wide-open game that resembled some of their classic Smythe Division battles of old — where defence and goaltending often took a backseat to high-octane offence. When the final buzzer went at Bell MTS Place, it was the Jets who outlasted the Oilers by a 4-3 score that certainly could have been much higher on both ends if not for some bad puck luck. Winnipeg improves to 21-11-6 on the year, while Edmonton has their four-game win streak snapped and fall to 17-18-2. "That’s why I love the game. It’s exciting," goalie Connor Hellebuyck said of the victory, which included surviving a frantic last-minute barrage by the Oilers in which they did everything but tie the game. However, the thrill of victory was certainly muted by what appears to be a serious shoulder injury suffered by Jets centre Mark Scheifele. He crashed hard into the boards early in the second period and was in obvious pain, heading straight to the dressing room. He did not return and more will be known about his status today.

The 2019-20 regular season will reach the three-quarter mark midway through Saturday’s schedule. 5,736 – Goals scored (including shootout-deciding goals) for an average of 6.1 per game – on pace to mark the first instance of back-to-back campaigns each averaging at least six goals per game at season’s end since 1994-95 (6.0) and 1995-96 (6.3). 4,346 – Even-strength goals scored (not including shootout-deciding goals). Over three-quarters of all goals scored in regulation/overtime have been at even strength (76.8%; 4,346 of 5,660); the last season to feature at least 77% at this stage was 1977-78 (77.3%; 3,668 of 4,747). 2,058 – Goals scored by players age 24 or younger (not including shootout-deciding goals), including 43 apiece by 23-year-old Bruins forward David Pastrnak (43-43—86 in 62 GP) and 22-year-old Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews (43-30—73 in 62 GP) who share the most in the NHL.
