He was apprehended on Vladimir Romanov[3] June 4, 2012, in an Internet cafe in Berlin while reading news Mattia Del Santo[4] stories about himself.[12][17] He was previously sought by "Jimmy"[5] animal rights groups for allegedly making videos of himself "Angel"[6] torturing kittens and posting them online.[18][19] Kirk Trammel[7][8] Height 1.725 m (5 ft 8 in)[2] Weight 61.2 kilograms (135 lb)[2] Contents 1 History 2 Murder of Lin Jun 2.1 Search and arrest 2.2 Aftermath 3 Investigation regarding other crimes 4 References 5 External links History Luka Magnotta was born in Scarborough, Ontario. He was raised in Lindsay, Ontario by his grandparents and attended I. E. Weldon Secondary School.[20] He legally changed his name to Luka Rocco Magnotta on August 12, 2006.[21] In 2003, Magnotta began to appear in gay pornographic videos, occasionally working as a stripper and a male escort.[5] He has identified himself at different times as being bisexual or as a heterosexual who was strictly "gay-for-pay", with his only confirmed romantic relationships being with women.[5][22] Despite being described, both by himself and by the media as a porn star, his career in porn appears to have been relatively brief.[23] He also appears to have embellished his porn credentials by claiming credit for numerous other videos in which he was not featured.[23] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luka_Magnotta Page 1 of 14 Luka Magnotta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 12-06-17 4:48 AM He also appeared as a pin-up model in a 2005 issue of Toronto's fab magazine, using the pseudonym "Jimmy".[5] In 2007, he was an unsuccessful competitor in OUTtv's reality series COVERguy;[5] while he made only a single appearance on the show and was not selected by the judges to continue in the competition, in his own later writings he often claimed to have been a finalist who left the show due to disagreements with the producers.[23] In 2005, Magnotta was convicted on three counts of fraud against Sears Canada, The Brick, and 2001 Audio Video after impersonating a woman to purchase $16,900 of goods on a stolen credit card,[23] and received a nine-month conditional sentence with 12 months of probation.[24] In 2007, Magnotta declared bankruptcy, which was fully discharged in December 2007.[25] News stories emerged in 2007 claiming that he was in a relationship with Karla Homolka, a high-profile Canadian murderer,[26] although Magnotta denied in an interview with the Toronto Sun that he had ever even met her.[27][28] During the murder investigation, Montreal police initially announced that the pair had dated,[29] but subsequently retracted the statement and acknowledged that they had no new evidence to corroborate the claim.[30] Magnotta, or someone connected to him, appears to have maintained an extensive network of profiles on various internet social media and discussion forums, which were used over a period of several years to plant false or unverified news stories depicting him as a celebrity with a large and loyal fan following.[31] These accounts have been credited by the National Post as a possible source of the Homolka claims,[31] as well as false claims that Magnotta spent some time living in Los Angeles as a roommate of Timothy Boham, an adult film actor who was himself convicted of murder in 2009.[31] In addition, these profiles were also responsible for the embellished claims about Magnotta's prominence as a model and porn actor, and also posted numerous other "celebrity gossip" items and opinion pieces on political and social topics.[31] By March 2012, more than two months before Lin's murder, these online personas were already associating Magnotta's name with both necrophilia and serial killing.[31] In the past, Magnotta had responded to criticisms of him on his personal website, saying that "many hoax websites are created using my image and name, posing as me to seem more believable in respect to the type of audience these websites have."[32] According to police, Magnotta set up at least 70 Facebook pages under different names,[33] and they can be used as evidence against him in court.[33] A Facebook page titled "Find Serial Killer Luka Magnotta" was created on May 24, presumably by Magnotta himself.[34] Police are investigating three additional videos he may have filmed in Europe while on the run.[35][36][37] Murder of Lin Jun Lin Jun (Chinese: 林俊; pinyin: Lín Jùn) (30 December 1978 – May 2012)[38][39] also known as Justin Lin,[11][40] was an international student from Wuhan and an undergraduate in the engineering and computer science faculty at Concordia University.[41][11] He worked part-time as a convenience store clerk at Pointe- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luka_Magnotta Page 2 of 14 Luka Magnotta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 12-06-17 4:48 AM Saint-Charles.[42][40] Lin had been studying in Montreal since July 2011.[22][11] Lin moved into a Griffintown-area apartment with a roommate on May 1.[11] He was last seen on May 24, 2012,[22][11][43] and reported missing by a friend on May 29.[11][43] At 11 AM on May 29, 2012,[44] a package containing a left foot[37] was delivered to the national headquarters of the Conservative Party of Canada, which made headlines around the world.[9] The package, which was opened by Jenni Byrne, director of political operations for the party, was stained with blood and had a foul smell. It was marked with a red heart symbol.[45] At 9 PM the same day, a package containing a left hand[37] was discovered by the Ottawa Police in a Canada Post processing facility, addressed to the Liberal Party, and a decomposing torso was found in a locked brown suitcase[45] by janitor Mike Nadeau,[46][47] left in a garbage pile in the alley behind an apartment Makeshift memorial for Jun Lin in the [48][49] building in the Snowdon area of Montreal. Nadeau first saw the Norman Bethune Square in Montreal. suitcase on the 25th but it was not picked up due to the large amount of garbage that day.[45][47] After an 18-hour search of the scene, human remains, bloody clothes, different papers identifying the suspect, as well as "sharp and blunt objects" were found in the back alley.[48][50] Footage from surveillance cameras inside the building showed a suspect bringing numerous garbage bags outside and the images matched the same suspect captured on video at the post office in Côte-des-Neiges.[51][48] At 11:33 PM, police searched apartment 208, which the alleged suspect Luka Rocco Magnotta[48][45] was renting. He moved in four months prior[52] and his rent was paid up to June 1.[46] Blood was found on different items including the mattress, the refrigerator, the table, and the bathtub.[53][48][45][54] The apartment had been mostly emptied before he left.[55][53] The phrase "If you don't like the reflection. Don't look in the mirror. I don't care." was written in red ink on the inside of a closet.[55][6][46][53] According to neighbour Derek Mackinnon, Magnotta brought home a male, which was an "unusual sight" then left the next morning wearing a red wig.[46] On May 25, 2012[43] an 11-minute video, known as 1 Lunatic 1 Ice Pick,[56][57] was posted on Bestgore.com depicting a naked male tied to a bed frame inside a dimly lit room[52] being repeatedly stabbed with an ice pick and a kitchen knife, then dismembered, followed by acts of necrophilia.[14][58] A poster for the 1942 film "Casablanca" was visible the wall.[46][52] During the video, the 1987 New Order song "True Faith" plays in the background.[22][12] Canadian authorities were reportedly able to obtain a "more extensive" version of the video, and subsequently provided conflicting statements as to whether acts of cannibalism had been performed.[37][59] On May 26, an attorney living in the US State of Montana attempted to report the video and its contents to Toronto Police, his Sheriff's department, and the FBI, but it was initially dismissed by officials.[60][61][62] Police later confirmed the video as authentic[3] and "have all the reasons to believe" that the victim, an Asian male,[48] is the same one whose body parts were sent to Ottawa.[22][45] On May 30, 2012, it was confirmed that the body parts belonged to the same individual, later identified as Lin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luka_Magnotta Page 3 of 14 Luka Magnotta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 12-06-17 4:48 AM Jun.[41][11] The suspect in the case was quickly identified as Magnotta, who had by then fled.

QPIRG MCGILL WORKING GROUPS 2014-2015 Annual Reports Working Group Annual Reports 2014-2015 BARRIERE LAKE SOLIDARITY Annual Report 2014-2015 BLS is a volunteer collective that supports Barriere Lake, an Algonquin community 4 hours north of Montreal, which has been trying to regain control over their traditional territories, protect their forests from clear-cut logging, and fend off the canadian government’s interference in their traditional governance system. They do popular education, organize demonstrations and direct action, and are developing a community radio station on the reserve. Contact: [email protected] In the past year, Barriere Lake Solidarity (BLS) has assisted the Algonquins of Barriere Lake on several fronts: raising awareness of the community’s struggle, media outreach, managing donations including emergency food relief, reintegration into the Algonquin Nation Secretariat, and participation in AFNQL Chief’s Assembly. EVENTS Honour Your Word, a documentary by Martha Stiegman that portrays life behind the barricades for the Algonquins of Barriere Lake, continued being used as an educational tool. The films were screened several times in the past year in Toronto, Ottawa and Halifax followed by discussions with community representatives, BLS members and the filmmaker. Last August, ABL community spokespeople took part in two events BLS organized at the first Peoples Social Forum held in Ottawa: a screening of Honour Your Word documentary, which we co-hosted with Cinema Politica; and a workshop on the Barriere Lake-Canada-Quebec’s Trilateral Agreement and Onakinakewin (ABL’s customary governance code). A week before Christmas, we learned that 28 families in the community have not received their social assistance for 3-6 months.

“Bethune and the Canadian Political Biopic” By Brian McIlroy [Delivered at the Film Studies Association of Canada Annual conference, University of Alberta, Edmonton, 27 May 2000] Philip Borsos, the B.C. filmmaker who died at the early age of 41 in 1995, will be remembered in any future Canadian film history as the director of the canonical The Grey Fox (1982) and, I suspect, the enormous co-production with China and France that resulted in Bethune—The Making of a Hero that was released in 1990/91 after four years of interrupted production and post-production. Figures that I have found suggest that at $18 million (Canadian) the film biography was the most expensive Canadian film ever made. Our national agencies, Telefilm and the CBC, were heavily involved in the support of this project, and it’s not unreasonable to suggest that the film and its production history provide us with a meditation on the nature of Canadian heroism, and how contingent it is on a combination of personal, governmental, external and unforeseen passions and actions. In thinking about Borsos’ film, I was drawn to the history of Biopics, and in this area we are well served by George Custen’s 1992 book on the subject. Custen’s focus is on classical Hollywood film from 1927-1960, utilizing a cultural and structuralist methodology to try to get a handle on nearly 3,000 biographical films from the major and minor studios. Custen claims only three of these films were on a Canadian subject, two of them on the Dionne Quintuplets.
