UG, 4th Semester (H) CC-09-TH- Regional Planning and Development 3. Planning region: Characteristics, economic regionalization and identification of Indian Planning Regions (V. Nath, P. Sengupta & TCPO) Planning region: A planning region is a segment of territory (space) over which economic decisions apply. The term 'planning' in the present context means taking decisions to implement them in order to attain economic development. Planning regions may be administrative or political regions such as state, district or the block because such regions are better in management and collecting statistical data. For proper implementation and realization of plan objectives, a planning region should have fairly homogeneous economic, to zoographical and socio-cultural structure. It should be large enough to contain a range of resources provide it economic viability. It should also internally cohesive. Its resource endowment should be that a satisfactory level of product combination consumption and exchange is feasible. It should have some nodal points to regulate the flows. According to Keeble-“Planning Region is an area that is large enough to enable substantial changes in the distribution of population and employment to take place within this boundaries, yet which is small enough for its planning problem to be viewed as a whole”. According to Klaassen- “A planning region must be large enough to take investment decisions of an economic size, must be able to supply its own industry with the necessary labour, should have a homogeneous economic structure, contain at least one growth point and have a common approach to and awareness of its problems”. As a whole- A planning region is self created living organism having a life line. -

Mysore Tourist Attractions Mysore Is the Second Largest City in the State of Karnataka, India
Mysore Tourist attractions Mysore is the second largest city in the state of Karnataka, India. The name Mysore is an anglicised version of Mahishnjru, which means the abode of Mahisha. Mahisha stands for Mahishasura, a demon from the Hindu mythology. The city is spread across an area of 128.42 km² (50 sq mi) and is situated at the base of the Chamundi Hills. Mysore Palace : is a palace situated in the city. It was the official residence of the former royal family of Mysore, and also housed the durbar (royal offices).The term "Palace of Mysore" specifically refers to one of these palaces, Amba Vilas. Brindavan Gardens is a show garden that has a beautiful botanical park, full of exciting fountains, as well as boat rides beneath the dam. Diwans of Mysore planned and built the gardens in connection with the construction of the dam. Display items include a musical fountain. Various biological research departments are housed here. There is a guest house for tourists.It is situated at Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) dam. Jaganmohan Palace : was built in the year 1861 by Krishnaraja Wodeyar III in a predominantly Hindu style to serve as an alternate palace for the royal family. This palace housed the royal family when the older Mysore Palace was burnt down by a fire. The palace has three floors and has stained glass shutters and ventilators. It has housed the Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery since the year 1915. The collections exhibited here include paintings from the famed Travancore ruler, Raja Ravi Varma, the Russian painter Svetoslav Roerich and many paintings of the Mysore painting style. -

According to tradition, Lord Narayana of Melkote appeared in a dream to Sri Ramanuja (the 12th century Vaishnava Saint and propounder of the philosophy of Visishtadvait(!) and said to him that He was awaiting him on Yadugiri Hill. Thereupon, v,:ith the assistance of .Hoysala King Vishnu vardhana (who had received tapta-mudra from Ramanuja and embraced Vaishnavism) he discovered the idol which lay covered by an ant-hill which he excavated and worshipped. This incident is said to have occurred in the month of Tai in Bahudharaya year. A temple \.vas erected for Lord Narayana over the ant-hill and the installation of tlle image took place in 1100 A.D. -

STATE EDUCATIONAL PROFILE As of March 2013, Karnataka had 60036 elementary schools with 313008 teachers and 8.39 million students, and 14195 secondary schools with 114350 teachers and 2.09 million students. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karnataka - cite_note-school-99 There are three kinds of schools in the state, viz., government-run, private aided (financial aid is provided by the government) and private unaided (no financial aid is provided). The primary languages of instruction in most schools are Kannada apart from English, Urdu and Other languages. The syllabus taught in the schools is by and large the state syllabus (SSLC) defined by the Department of Public Instruction of the Government of Karnataka, and the CBSE, ICSE in case of certain private unaided and KV schools. In order to provide supplementary nutrition and maximize attendance in schools, the Karnataka Government has launched a mid-day meal scheme in government and aided schools in which free lunch is provided to the students. A pair of uniforms and all text books is given to children; free bicycles are given to 8th standard children. Statewide board examinations are conducted at the end of the period of X standard and students who qualify are allowed to pursue a two-year pre-university course; after which students become eligible to pursue under-graduate degrees. There are two separate Boards of Examination for class X and class XII. There are 652 degree colleges (March 2011) affiliated with one of the universities in the state, viz. Bangalore University, Gulbarga University, Karnataka University, Kuvempu University, Mangalore University and University of Mysore . -

Rajamani National Facility for Geochemical Research, School of Environmental Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi 110067, India Received 23 November 2005; accepted in revised form 3 January 2007; available online 10 January 2007 Abstract Fe-nodules occur within saprolites formed from weathering of granodioritic gneisses in the rain-shadow region of the Mysore Plateau adjacent to the Sahyadri Mountains in Southern India. These nodules and their host saprolites were studied for their geochemistry, including chemical speciation, to understand nodule formation and chemical redistribution processes during rock weathering. From their mode of occurrence, and mineralogical and geochemical data, we infer that the nodules originated by a two-stage process in which the initial extensive weathering of gneisses likely facilitated subsequent ferrolysis weathering and nodule formation. Nodules originated by precipitation of goethite, hematite and gibbsite along with several amorphous phases within the matrix of weathered gneisses. This is possible only under hydromorphic conditions, suggesting that parts of the plateau must have gone through a humid phase prior to the present aridity. In the saprolites, Al, Fe, and Ti become enriched because of the removal of Si, Ca, Na, and K. However within the nodule, Fe, Ti, Cr, and Ni are deposited after their chemical transport from the saprolite. Titanium, known for its immobile nature, was also mobilized and concen- trated under the conditions of nodule formation. The most important elements in the nodule constitution are Fe, Al, Ti, and Mn, each having both crystalline and amorphous phases. -

Uplift along the western margin of the Deccan Basalt Province: Is there any geomorphometric evidence? Vishwas S Kale∗ and Nikhil Shejwalkar Department of Geography, University of Pune, Pune 411 007, India. ∗e-mail: [email protected] In line with the passive margin landscape evolutionary model in vogue, sustained erosion and long-distance retreat of the Western Ghat escarpment are widely considered to be the results of erosionally-driven isostatic uplift since Tertiary by many workers. Others have postulated or adduced evidence for strong neotectonic activity in the Ghat region. An obvious question in this regard is whether there is any geomorphometric evidence in support of this widespread view? In order to test the hypothesis of ongoing post-rift fexural uplift or neotectonic activity in the western Deccan Basalt Province (DBP), geomorphometric analysis was carried out and commonly used geomorphic indices of active tectonics (GAT) were derived for 30 selected river basins on both sides of the Western Ghat. SRTM-DEM data and ArcGIS were used to derive the indices. Tectonic geomorphic analysis based on five proxy indicators suggests that the differences in GAT indices, both along strike and across the Western Ghat, are statistically insignificant. The index values are nowhere close to the GAT values typically associated with drainage basins affected by active tectonics and deformation. Mapping of the indices reveals lack of discernable trends. The adduced results indicate that the western DBP belongs to the class of relatively low tectonic activity. 1. Introduction escarpments.
