Nasher Sculpture Center’s Soundings Concert Honoring President John F. Kennedy with New Work by American Composer Steven Mackey to be Performed at City Performance Hall; Guaranteed Seating with Soundings Season Ticket Package Brentano String Quartet Performance of One Red Rose, co-commissioned by the Nasher with Carnegie Hall and Yellow Barn, moved to accommodate bigger audience. DALLAS, Texas (September 12, 2013) – The Nasher Sculpture Center is pleased to announce that the JFK commemorative Soundings concert will be performed at City Performance Hall. Season tickets to Soundings are now on sale with guaranteed seating to the special concert honoring President Kennedy on the 50th anniversary of his death with an important new work by internationally renowned composer Steven Mackey. One Red Rose is written for the Brentano String Quartet in commemoration of this anniversary, and is commissioned by the Nasher (Dallas, TX) with Carnegie Hall (New York, NY) and Yellow Barn (Putney, VT). The concert will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 7:30 pm at City Performance Hall with celebrated musicians; the Brentano String Quartet, clarinetist Charles Neidich and pianist Seth Knopp. Mr. Mackey’s One Red Rose will be performed along with seminal works by Olivier Messiaen and John Cage. An encore performance of One Red Rose, will take place Sunday, November 24, 2013 at 2 pm at the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. Both concerts will include a discussion with the audience. Season tickets are now available at NasherSculptureCenter.org and individual tickets for the November 23 concert will be available for purchase on October 8, 2013. -

The Greek guitarist Antigoni Goni enjoys a truly international career, having performed extensively in Europe, Russia, North and South America and the far East, both as a recitalist and soloist. Antigoni Goni’s career blossomed in the mid ‘90s when she added to her long list of competition prizes the First Prize of the Guitar Foundation of America Competition, becoming thus the first and only Greek to ever win it. Her victory resulted in some 65 concerts in North America and a contract with Naxos Records, for whom she has recorded three highly successful CDs. Antigoni Goni regularly performs in concert halls such as the Con- certgebouw in Amsterdam, the Covent Garden and the Wigmore Hall in London, Gasteig Hall in Munich, the Athens Megaron and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Acropolis (Athens) as well as the Philharmonic and the Cappella Sale in St. Petersburg and the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. Across the Atlantic her US engagements bring Ms. Goni every year to concert halls such as the Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall and the Juilliard Theater in New York City, Spivey Hall in Atlanta, Benaroya Hall in Seattle and Herbst Theatre in San Francisco. -

CHARLES NEIDICH · Clarinetist/Conductor Biography Charles Neidich (U.S.A.) Hailed by the New Yorker as "a master of his instrument and beyond a clarinetist” Charles Neidich has been described as one of the most mesmerizing musicians performing before the public today. He regularly appears as soloist and as collaborator in chamber music programs with leading ensembles including the Saint Louis Symphony, Minneapolis Symphony, I Musici di Montreal, Tafelmusik, Handel/Haydn Society, Royal Philharmonic, Deutsches Philharmonic, MDR Symphony, Yomiuri Symphony, National Symphony of Taiwan, and the Juilliard, Guarneri, Brentano, American, Mendelssohn, Carmina, Colorado, and Cavani String Quartets. He is currently a member of the New York Woodwind Quintet and a member emeritus of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Charles Neidich has performed throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States, and is a sought after participant at many summer festivals such as the Marlboro and Sarasota festivals in the USA, the Orford and Domaines Forget festivals in Canada, BBC Proms in England, Festival Consonances and Pontivy in France, Corsi Internazionali di Perfezionamento in Italy, Kuhmo, Crusell Week, Turku, and Korsholm festivals in Finland, the Apeldoorn Festival in Holland, Music from Moritzburg in Germany, the Kirishima and Lilia summer festivals in Japan, and the Beijing Festival in China. When Charles Neidich began studying clarinet with his father, Irving Neidich at the age of 7, he had already started piano lessons with his mother, Litsa Gania Neidich. He continued studying both instruments, but the clarinet gradually won out, and he went at the age of 17 to continue studying with the noted clarinet teacher, Leon Russianoff. -

THE EMIGRANTS FROM SMÅLAND, SWEDEN. THE AMERICAN DREAM by Ken Sawyer, Halifax, England. 1999 from http://www.swedesintexas.com Introduction These are my collected notes about emigration from Sweden to the USA first became interested in this subject when I discovered that some of the Swedish emigrants traveled by train through my home area in West Yorkshire (England), en route from Hull to Liverpool. I had previously known a little about this great emigration and then I was further stimulated when we visited the Emigrants Museum in Växjö, Småland; this was a main province from which the emigrants departed and is the reason for emphasising Småland as representative of Sweden as a whole. With the start of steam powered ships their voyage to the USA took 2-3 weeks and often included a crossing from Gothenburg to Hull on board the ships of the Wilson Line. This was followed by a train journey from Hull, through the Huddersfield/Halifax area, to Liverpool and then a crossing by the Inman Line or another company’s ship to New York. Did you know that in 1638, through a Government inspired emigration, the colony called New Sweden was established in Delaware, on America’s East Coast? It was in Sweden’s possession for almost twenty years, but was then lost to the Dutch. Did you know that in the second half of the 19th Century and the early years of the 20th, more than a million Swedes, around 1/4 of the population, emigrated from Sweden and mainly to the USA? Did you know that this was called the “American fever”? Even today, at least five million USA citizens are of Swedish extraction? Vilhelm Moberg, storywriter about the emigrants. -

CONCLUSION 47 BIBLIOGRAPHY INTRODUCTION People streamed from Europe driven to a new land by the lack of food and the lack of land, by the presence of peasant fears and the presence of racial and religious persecution, by the love of adventure and a plan for a richer life, by the hope for a more generous future and the dread of a continued oppression. It is conceded that most who wanted to come were poor or despairing, harrassed or discontented, but only the courageous and optimistic dared to come. Many others who chose to migrate could have continued to lead comfortable lives in Europe, but curiosity about America and confidence in its future influenced them to transfer. Only the bold and enterprising have sufficient courage: they are the Instruments which stir up the tranquil hamlete and shake the order of unchangeableness. These separate from the multitude and fill a few small ships a trickle here and there starts the running stream which in due time swells to a mighty river.1 The crossing was often marked by diseases of body and mind, by deprivation of needs, physical and spiritual, and by humiliation of landsmen on the sea and Individuals in a herd. -
