The Greek guitarist Antigoni Goni enjoys a truly international career, having performed extensively in Europe, Russia, North and South America and the far East, both as a recitalist and soloist. Antigoni Goni’s career blossomed in the mid ‘90s when she added to her long list of competition prizes the First Prize of the Guitar Foundation of America Competition, becoming thus the first and only Greek to ever win it. Her victory resulted in some 65 concerts in North America and a contract with Naxos Records, for whom she has recorded three highly successful CDs. Antigoni Goni regularly performs in concert halls such as the Con- certgebouw in Amsterdam, the Covent Garden and the Wigmore Hall in London, Gasteig Hall in Munich, the Athens Megaron and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Acropolis (Athens) as well as the Philharmonic and the Cappella Sale in St. Petersburg and the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. Across the Atlantic her US engagements bring Ms. Goni every year to concert halls such as the Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall and the Juilliard Theater in New York City, Spivey Hall in Atlanta, Benaroya Hall in Seattle and Herbst Theatre in San Francisco. -

The 16th Annual Cleveland International Classical Guitar Festival June 3 - 5, 2016 Vieaux, USA SoloDuo, Italy Poláčková, Czech Republic Gallén, Spain De Jonge, Canada North, England Powis, Australia Davin, USA Beattie, Canada Presented by UITARS NTERNATIONAL G I in cooperation with the GUITARSINT.COM CLEVELAND, OHIO USA 216-752-7502 Grey Fannel HAUTE COUTURE Fait Main en France • Hand Made in France www.bamcases.com Welcome Welcome to the sixteenth annual Cleveland International Classical Guitar Festival. In pre- senting this event it has been my honor to work closely with Jason Vieaux, 2015 Grammy Award Winner and Cleveland Institute of Music Guitar Department Head; Colin Davin, recently appointed to the Cleveland Institute of Music’s Conservatory Guitar Faculty; and Tom Poore, a highly devoted guitar teacher and superb writer. Our reasons for presenting this Festival are fivefold: (1) to help increase the awareness and respect due artists whose exemplary work has enhanced our lives and the lives of others; (2) to entertain; (3) to educate; (4) to encourage deeper thought and discussion about how we listen to, perform, and evaluate fine music; and, most important, (5) to help facilitate heightened moments of human awareness. In our experience participation in the live performance of fine music is potentially one of the highest social ends towards which we can aspire as performers, music students, and audience members. For it is in live, heightened moments of musical magic—when time stops and egos dissolve—that often we are made most conscious of our shared humanity. Armin Kelly, Founder and Artistic Director Cleveland International Classical Guitar Festival Acknowledgements We wish to thank the following for their generous support of this event: The Cleveland Institute of Music: Gary Hanson, Interim President; Lori Wright, Director, Concerts and Events; Marjorie Gold, Concert Production Manager; Gina Rendall, Concert Facilities Coordinator; Susan Iler, Director of Marketing and Communications; Lynn M. -

two weeks of world-class music newbury spring festival 11–25 may 2019 £5 2019-NSF book.qxp_NSF programme book 23/04/2019 12:31 Page 1 A Royal Welcome HRH The Duke of Kent KG Last year was very special for the Newbury Spring Festival as we marked the fortieth anniversary of the Festival. But following this anniversary there is some sad news, with the recent passing of our President, Jeanie, Countess of Carnarvon. Her energy, commitment and enthusiasm from the outset and throughout the evolution of the Festival have been fundamental to its success. The Duchess of Kent and I have seen the Festival grow from humble beginnings to an internationally renowned arts festival, having faced and overcome many obstacles along the way. Jeanie, Countess of Carnarvon, can be justly proud of the Festival’s achievements. Her legacy must surely be a Festival that continues to flourish as we embark on the next forty years. www.newburyspringfestival.org.uk 1 2019-NSF book.qxp_NSF programme book 23/04/2019 12:31 Page 2 Jeanie, Countess of Carnarvon MBE Founder and President 1935 - 2019 2 box office 0845 5218 218 2019-NSF book.qxp_NSF programme book 23/04/2019 12:31 Page 3 The Festival’s founder and president, Jeanie Countess of Carnarvon was a great and much loved lady who we will always remember for her inspirational support of Newbury Spring Festival and her gentle and gracious presence at so many events over the years. Her son Lord Carnarvon pays tribute to her with the following words. My darling mother’s lifelong interest in the arts and music started in her childhood in the USA. -

The distinction of its thematic material, and its use in cyclical form, is reinforced by an ultimately victorious motto theme. The F major Quartet was written later, but remained unfinished, but it too is a fertile creation with a strong dance profile. Both works are heard in Alf Årdal’s imaginative arrangements for string orchestra. Arne Nordheim, Norway’s leading living composer, wrote Rendezvous as a quartet but expanded it in 1986. It is an intense, moving, and beautifully crafted work. Stephan Barratt-Due has been artistic director of the Barratt Due Institute of Music since 1985, a conservatory in Oslo founded in 1927 by his grandparents and now one of the main educational institutions of music in Norway. Barratt-Due is among the leading violin professors in Scandinavia, and under his leadership the Oslo Camerata has become increasingly in demand both nationally and internationally. -

Petition for Public Inquiry Into Abuse in Musical Education
PETITION FOR INQUIRY INTO ABUSE IN MUSICAL EDUCATION The following petition was launched on February 16th, 2013, and published in the Guardian on February 19th. By February 24th, it had gained over a thousand signatories, including over 200 former students at Chetham’s. It was re-opened from May 9th to May 31st, 2013, following further allegations of sexual abuse at various UK music educational establishments. Since then more signatories have also been added. The following contains the list of signatories as of November 26th, 2013. In recent weeks, the ongoing allegations of historical sexual abuse at Chetham’s School of Music have put many aspects of music education under intense public scrutiny. This is following the conviction of the former director of music, Michael Brewer, the tragic death of Frances Andrade and extensive testimonies in the press of other abuse. It is now clear that there should be a full independent inquiry into the alleged sexual and psychological abuse of children and young people by Chetham’s staff since the establishment of the institution as a music school in 1969. Such an inquiry would ideally extend to other institutions as well, some of which have also been the subject of allegations of abuse. Recent press reports have suggested that during this time many students complained to senior members of staff about the sexually abusive behaviour of a number of Chetham’s teachers, but that no satisfactory action was taken. It is of primary concern that those who stand accused should be investigated as soon as possible. However, if these allegations are shown to be correct, it will also be important to understand the wider implications of a school culture which facilitated such abuses of trust, and afforded alleged offenders long-term protection. -
