Chinese Footballers Worksheet Chinese Footballers in the UK 1 Chinese Footballers in the UK 加盟英足的中国球员 Strikers, Midfielders and Defenders 前锋、中场和后卫 Read the text below and do the activity that follows. 阅读下面的短文,然后完成练习: In the past few years, the popularity of football in China has increased, and in Britain, football clubs have also taken an interest in Chinese footballers. In 2002, Sun Jihai signed to Premiership team Manchester City and has since become one of their key defenders. Jihai entered the history books by being the first Chinese player to score in the Premiership. Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce has praised Jihai’s versatility and said that the player was missed when he was off the pitch due to injury earlier this year. Another China international, Li Tie has been a regular midfielder at Everton football club for several years. However, he suffered a setback at the end of 2004 because of a broken leg which kept him out of action for several months. The latest Chinese player to join a Premiership team was the 18 year old prodigy Dong Fangzhuo, who was bought by Manchester United in 2004. Because of problems with red tape he does not yet have a work permit to play in Britain, so he is currently at a Belgian feeder club. However, the striker was able to play for Manchester United in their Far East tour. He impressed manager Alex Ferguson in his first club appearance, scoring a goal to help the team beat Hong Kong 0-2. Ferguson said that Dong has great potential, and compared his goal to British football legend Gary Lineker. The Scottish premiership has also become interested in Chinese players, with Rangers football club signing a partnership deal with Shenzhen Jianlibao to co-operate in coaching and player development. Rival club Celtic signed another promising Chinese player, Du Wei, although so far he has stayed on the substitutes’ bench. However, manager Gordon Strachan has described him as a joy in training sessions and said that he is likely to play for the club soon. 2 Glossary 词汇表 taken an interest in 对…发生兴趣 signed to 签约 defenders (足球)后卫 entered the history books 载入史 册 versatility 多面手 off the pitch 不(能)上场参赛 international 国际球员 midfielder (足球)中场 suffered a setback 受挫 out of action 停赛 prodigy 天才(少年) red tape 官僚手续 feeder club(为主队培训队员的)中转 striker (足球)前锋 俱乐部 potential 潜力 legend 传奇式人物 partnership deal 合作协议 rival 竞争对手 promising 有发展前途的 on the substitutes bench (替补) 板凳队员 1. • Football and National Identity in Hong Kong and Mainland China
The Hong Kong Anthropologist Volume 1, 2007 Football and National Identity in Hong Kong and Mainland China CHAN Kwan Hang, Brooklyn1 Introduction Ernest Gellner believed in today’s world that, “a man must have a nationality as he must have a nose and two ears”. (Billig quoting Gellner 1983: 6) Hong Kong, with its history of being a British Crown Colony from 1898 to 1997, nationality doesn’t come as naturally as Gellner suggested. Residents often convey a weak sense of belonging towards their state, China. This can be seen from the majority of Hong Kong people paying phlegmatic attention to the 1997 handover as the “joy” of returning to the Motherland was shared by only a handful. Some even anticipated adverse prospects in Hong Kong. Fearing the worst, many chose to emigrate. Seven years on, significant change of hearts is still inexistent as today Chinese National Day is still rather overlooked and given the cold-shoulder in Hong Kong (local schools have the option to decide rather they celebrate National Day and most opt not to); and more obviously some people refuse or feel peculiar to call themselves “Chinese”. Seemingly Hong Kong people make little identification with their state, China. However when Yao Ming, a Chinese basketball player of Houston Rockets, visited Hong Kong in 2003 and 2005, stadiums were filled with enthusiastic audience attending a seminar about “Distinguished Chinese”; considerate support was given to China as the team played in the finals of the 2002 World Cup. How does that happen? Why doesn’t the identification persist and expand to other areas? Archetti once said, “Nationalism must be conceived as a cognitive and social arena marked by obligations and not by selfish consideration” (Giulianotti, Williams 1994: 227) This will bring us to the central question I wish to answer in this project.

Master’s Degree in Languages, Economics and Institutions of Asia and North Africa Final Thesis Football condition in China: the case of naturalized players Supervisor Ch. Prof. Renzo Riccardo Cavalieri Graduand Emanuele Salvati Matriculation number 868763 Academic Year 2019 / 2020 Abstract The focus of this thesis is the recent naturalization of foreign players in China, that led to the debut of the first football player without Chinese ancestry in the Chinese national team. The first chapter is an introduction to the naturalization in football in all its aspects. I will first clarify concepts such as nation, nationality, and citizenship. Then I will analyze the evolution of the regulations on eligibility, starting from the case of Italy in the thirties to arrive to the modern FIFA eligibility rules. In the second chapter, I will focus on the Chinese football condition. Starting with an overview of football history in the country, from the very first form of the game passing through the professionalization in the nineties to arrive at the recent years in which the Chinese Super League (CSL) developed very rapidly. The focus of the chapter is the relationship between Chinese authorities, football clubs and players and the reforms Chinese government is doing to reduce the gap with European football, trying to improve both CSL clubs and national team level. These reforms aim to turn China into a world elite competitor by 2050 mainly through promotion of football at the grassroots level and league development. The third chapter reviews the process of naturalization of foreign players that is now a widespread argument in the Chinese football circle, investigating reasons, advantages and drawbacks.
