Paper for PARBICA, ARANZ, ASA Conference, Brisbane, 12-17 October 2009. This paper is given to celebrate the 40 years of Pacific Manuscripts Bureau operations. It coincides with a period of transition in the Bureau’s management. Prof Brij Lal, the chair of the Pacific Manuscripts Bureau Management Committee since 1994, is nearing retirement; I am in a transition to retirement; Kylie Moloney has been appointed as PMB archivist with a view to taking over the management of the Bureau. At the PMB management committee meeting in May 2009 member libraries asked the Bureau’s staff to conduct a survey of the existing PMB collections so they can make a more informed decisions about the future strategic direction of Pambu projects. Pambu resources are minimal – time is short and maintaining momentum has been a key factor in the Bureau’s survival – therefore, in order to economise, this paper combines celebration and review. A natural reference point for both celebration and review, and thus this paper, is Robert Langdon’s unpublished report, “Pacific Manuscripts Bureau: pros and cons of its continuance”, written as he was retiring from the Bureau in April 1986.1 Langdon’s style is blunt and focused on the question of whether the Bureau would be able to continue to operate after his departure. -

However, they have also consistently condemned homophobia during this period (and often seemed unaware of their own complicity in it). This thesis draws on the work of René Girard to analyse popular English evangelical writings and the ways in which they have implicitly encouraged violence against gays even whilst explicitly condemning it. This analysis of evangelical writings on homosexuality is placed in its historical context by drawing on the work of relevant historians and social scientists. It is further contextualised by reference to an analysis of evangelical writings on holiness during the same period. The thesis argues that English evangelical violence towards gays is a byproduct of internal conflicts within English evangelicalism. -

The Tweedie Family

About this book and the authors: This book is the work of many hands. In 1990 Edwin Tweedie of Wheaton, Illinois hired genealogist Hazel Weir to research the Tweedie family in Scotland. She put him in touch with several cousins in Scotland, who were descendants of great, great, uncle Alexander Tweedie. May Tweedie Stephen responded to Edwin’s letter and a meeting was arranged in Scotland. It was at this gathering that the idea of a book about the family history was born. The primary genealogist was Diane McNichols of Scotland who undertook this work at the behest and in the employ of of Ann Tweedie Rennie of East Lothian, Scotland in 1993. In 2001, with most of the research having been done, Mr. McNichols, the publisher and husband of Diane, took ill and work on the book was interrupted for several years. Despairing of the book ever being finished, Edwin with encouragement from his daughter, Lynne, consulted Ellen (Tweedie) Wyckoff, his niece, also of Wheaton to undertake to finish the project. Ellen had previously done most of the scanning of photographs for the book at the inception. Ellen, having only a preliminary galley proof to work from, had the text OCR Scanned into a workable format and proceeded to organize and format the book. She is also responsible for the style and decorations throughout, which are either taken from authentic sources or designed by her entirely. -

Whāia te Atuatanga: theological education, text books, Te Rau College, cultures and contexts A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MA in history at Massey University, Albany, New Zealand. George Howard Douglas Connor 2012 Abstract This thesis shows that Anglican theological training for Māori in the years from 1883 to 1921 was in te reo Māori at Te Rau College, Gisborne, and surveys, in particular, the text books used, analysing what those text book indicators show about Māori theological education. I had flown from Canberra to Brisbane, then direct to Luganville. On arrival at the Sarakata parish, we found the boxes of archives piled on a pallet in a room that is no longer used.
