Partnership in the Gospel A Report based on the Vision of the Archbishop of Melanesia On Sunday 17 April 2016 more than 4000 people gathered at St Barnabas Cathedral Honiara in the Solomon Islands to witness the enthronement of Archbishop George Takeli as the sixth Archbishop of Anglican Church of Melanesia. It was at this enthronement that he set out his vision for the future of the church of Melanesia. In the last 18 months he has been working to establish many of those ideas. I want in this report to reflect upon the key messages of that vision which Archbishop George Takeli has set out and the Church of Melanesia has begun trying to live out and implement. “God is always present with us.” Melanesian culture is pervaded by the realisation of the presence of God in all things. It is a culture immediately dependent on the land and sea to sustain the life of its people. When storms and cyclone come, as we have seen they often do, we have constantly seen how vulnerable these low-lying islands are, made still more vulnerable by climate change. We also see the resilience and courage of the people both in Solomon Islands and Vanuatu as they rebuild their lives after floods and cyclones and when forced to move whole villages and abandon islands due to rising sea levels. In our partnership with the Church of Melanesia we have much to learn from this closeness to creation- for we abandon our own stewardship of creation at our peril. But we also have much to learn about the presence of God in our daily lives- the gifts of God revealed in the food we eat, the water we drink, our homes providing shelter from the elements, the air we breathe and the many gifts of God we take for granted. -

MESSAGE FROM · THE ARCHBISHOP OF MELANESIA TO THE PROVINCE To all God's People in Melanesia : - We as the Independent Church of Melanesia have a great responsibility ahead of us. We all have a duty to do for God's Church and the Country. Soon our Country will become independent and everybody is expected to contri bute something. What is our contribution t o the Country? 1. The C.O.M. has inherited a goodly tradition from the past, both the Anglican tradition and our own Melanesian tradition. We must combine the two in order to give strength and meaning to our worship. 2. We must thank our Founders, Bishops Selwyn and Patteson and the great men and women of tbe past, especially our first Archbishop for planning and preparing our Church to be:.ome a Province. Each one of us must be willing to work hard, work together and believe in God for what He wants His Church to be in the future. J. The many changes that have come to our Islands have caused confusion and doubts in the minds of some of our people. They ar~ involved in many different kinds of work and activities which are very good, but as a re sult these involvements weaken the work of the Church in some parts. It is evident after being installed in September as President of the Women of St. I still sit in her pew, half way down on the right side. I often feel like she is right John’s Church that there is always something new, interesting and magical going there beside me, although she has been gone for years. History of St. Louis Parish (extracted from “Dedication of St. Louis School and Convent, Groveton, Sunday September 16, 1956, Most Rev. Peter L. Ireton, D.D, Bishop of Richmond, Presiding) St. Louis Parish in Groveton The history of Catholicism in and around the Alexandria area goes back many many years. Prior to the Revolutionary War, the Catholic religion was proscribed [forbidden] in Virginia. Priests from Maryland would cross the Potomac to minister secretly to their co-religionists. The first public Mass was probably said by the French chaplains of Rochambeau’s army, a part of which wintered in Alexandria after the surrender of Cornwallis in 1781. After the War, Catholics discussed plans for a formal place of worship in Alexandria. The first Catholic Church in this part of Virginia was finally built in 1793. For many years, Jesuit priests from Georgetown University took care of St. Mary’s, the new parish in Alexandria. The parish continued to grow during these years and in 1891 Father Cutler, a priest of the Diocese of Richmond was appointed pastor. He was succeeded by Father Smet, Father McKeefry, Msgr. Rankin, and Msgr. Stephens [the present pastor in 1956]. These priests cared for a parish that included not only Alexandria but also a large area outside the city, including what is now St. Louis parish in Groveton [now known as St. Louis Catholic Church]. Father Louis Smet, in particular, seemed to be interested in the Groveton area. Under his direction, Mrs. L. E. Tull, who lived in Groveton, began a Sunday school for the Catholic children of the area. -

Paper for PARBICA, ARANZ, ASA Conference, Brisbane, 12-17 October 2009. This paper is given to celebrate the 40 years of Pacific Manuscripts Bureau operations. It coincides with a period of transition in the Bureau’s management. Prof Brij Lal, the chair of the Pacific Manuscripts Bureau Management Committee since 1994, is nearing retirement; I am in a transition to retirement; Kylie Moloney has been appointed as PMB archivist with a view to taking over the management of the Bureau. At the PMB management committee meeting in May 2009 member libraries asked the Bureau’s staff to conduct a survey of the existing PMB collections so they can make a more informed decisions about the future strategic direction of Pambu projects. Pambu resources are minimal – time is short and maintaining momentum has been a key factor in the Bureau’s survival – therefore, in order to economise, this paper combines celebration and review. A natural reference point for both celebration and review, and thus this paper, is Robert Langdon’s unpublished report, “Pacific Manuscripts Bureau: pros and cons of its continuance”, written as he was retiring from the Bureau in April 1986.1 Langdon’s style is blunt and focused on the question of whether the Bureau would be able to continue to operate after his departure. -

Therefore, it is indeed an action which can touch the heart of God and through God it can reach everywhere. In fact, we can participate in God’s mission locally and globally through our prayers. The Prayer Diary is like a map which can help us to reach all places or areas where ABM has been doing God’s mission. Moreover, through our daily prayers, which are our integrative actions, we can join hands with ABM and its partners to be able to accomplish God’s will in those areas. "The Catholic and Evangelical Origins of the Anglican Franciscans: how receptive ecumenism can work and where it might be leading us" Fr Thomas Matthew Sharp nTSSF SCP [email protected] – [email protected] Durham University – Newcastle Cathedral – Anglican Third Order Franciscans The reception of Roman liturgy into the Church of England was largely facilitated by the Anglican Franciscan communities and their disobedience (or flexible relationship with the spirit of the canons of the Church of England) and by their background both catholic and evangelical. They provide a model for receptive ecumenism within experimental communities and projects which can test elements of reception before their adoption into wider church structures. On the 13th of March 2013 as we sat eating dinner at Hilfield Friary, Brother Sam burst in. "We've got a new Pope," he shouted, "and his name's Francis!" Much laughter and a few cheers. And the voice of Brother Hugh cutting through it all: "He's not my Pope!" Ecumenical rubber meets the Anglican road. Today I want to offer the evolution and influence of SSF, in its sometimes ecumenically messy way, as fruit for the wider church as we attempt to grow together in unity. Defining Terms Before we begin, let us start with some terminology. I won't describe the Church of England as "protestant", partly because the meaning of the term is so contested within Anglicanism, but really because I want to avoid the term protestant being applied as "not catholic" or even worse "against what is catholic." I don't want, from the very start, to set the Church of England and the Church of Rome against one another conceptually.
