It is evident after being installed in September as President of the Women of St. I still sit in her pew, half way down on the right side. I often feel like she is right John’s Church that there is always something new, interesting and magical going there beside me, although she has been gone for years. As a child I scribbled with the on at St. John’s. As if it had been planned, the gospel was about love. Jesus tells us in John 15:9-17: "As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love." "I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy might be complete." "This is my commandment: love one another as I love you." Our Holy Father St. Francis speaks about the love of the Lord in terms of a spouse, a sibling, a mother... "We are spouses when the faithful soul is joined to our Lord Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit. We are brothers to Him when we do the will of the Father Who is in Heaven (Mt 12:50); mothers, when we carry Him in our heart and body (cf. 1 Cor 6:20) through divine love and pure and sincere conscience and when we give birth to Him through a holy manner of working, which should shine before others as an example." (cf. Mt 5:16). (The Letter to the Faithful) The ancient Greeks had four words for the different kinds of Love: Agápe is the kind of love or charity that we show to our brothers and sisters. -
History of St. Louis Parish (Extracted from “Dedication of St
History of St. Louis Parish (extracted from “Dedication of St. Louis School and Convent, Groveton, Sunday September 16, 1956, Most Rev. Peter L. Ireton, D.D, Bishop of Richmond, Presiding) St. Louis Parish in Groveton The history of Catholicism in and around the Alexandria area goes back many many years. Prior to the Revolutionary War, the Catholic religion was proscribed [forbidden] in Virginia. Priests from Maryland would cross the Potomac to minister secretly to their co-religionists. The first public Mass was probably said by the French chaplains of Rochambeau’s army, a part of which wintered in Alexandria after the surrender of Cornwallis in 1781. After the War, Catholics discussed plans for a formal place of worship in Alexandria. The first Catholic Church in this part of Virginia was finally built in 1793. For many years, Jesuit priests from Georgetown University took care of St. Mary’s, the new parish in Alexandria. The parish continued to grow during these years and in 1891 Father Cutler, a priest of the Diocese of Richmond was appointed pastor. He was succeeded by Father Smet, Father McKeefry, Msgr. Rankin, and Msgr. Stephens [the present pastor in 1956]. These priests cared for a parish that included not only Alexandria but also a large area outside the city, including what is now St. Louis parish in Groveton [now known as St. Louis Catholic Church]. Father Louis Smet, in particular, seemed to be interested in the Groveton area. Under his direction, Mrs. L. E. Tull, who lived in Groveton, began a Sunday school for the Catholic children of the area. -

Who Are the Secular Franciscans, and What Do They Do?
Who are the Secular Franciscans, and what do they do? The Secular Franciscan Order is a vocation, a Way of Life approved by the Church, for men and women, married or single, who are called to take an active part in the mission of Christ to bring "the good news of salvation" to the world. Secular Franciscans commit themselves to a life in Christ calling for a positive effort to promote Gospel attitudes among their contemporaries. They are united with each other in communities, through which they develop a sense of direction according to the Gospel spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi. FRANCIS, the saint known and loved the world over, was born at Assisi, central Italy, in the year 1181, the son of a wealthy merchant. He died there in 1226, after a life in Christ that earned him the title Poverelo (little poor man). As a youth, Francis had a series of powerful incidents of conversion, including a vision in which Jesus told him to "rebuild my church, for it is falling into ruin." He found Jesus in the poor and suffering, especially the lepers. He and his followers became visible exemplars of a literal Christian life. In the words of Pope Pius XI, "So lifelike and strikingly did the image of Jesus Christ and the Gospel manner of life shine forth in Francis, that he appeared to his contemporaries almost as though he were the Risen Christ." Saint Francis attained this marvelous ideal by making the holy Gospel, in every detail, the rule and standard of his life. -

JEDER TREU AUF SEINEM POSTEN: GERMAN CATHOLICS AND KULTURKAMPF PROTESTS by Jennifer Marie Wunn (Under the Direction of Laura Mason) ABSTRACT The Kulturkampf which erupted in the wake of Germany’s unification touched Catholics’ lives in multiple ways. Far more than just a power struggle between the Catholic Church and the new German state, the conflict became a true “struggle for culture” that reached into remote villages, affecting Catholic men, women, and children, regardless of their age, gender, or social standing, as the state arrested clerics and liberal, Protestant polemicists castigated Catholics as ignorant, anti-modern, effeminate minions of the clerical hierarchy. In response to this assault on their faith, most Catholics defended their Church and clerics; however, Catholic reactions to anti- clerical legislation were neither uniform nor clerically-controlled. Instead, Catholics’ Kulturkampf activism took many different forms, highlighting both individual Catholics’ personal agency in deciding if, when, and how to take part in the struggle as well as the diverse factors that motivated, shaped, and constrained their activism. Catholics resisted anti-clerical legislation in ways that reflected their personal lived experience; attending to the distinctions between men’s and women’s activism or those between older and younger Catholics’ participation highlights individuals’ different social and communal roles and the diverse ways in which they experienced and negotiated the dramatic transformations the new nation underwent in its first decade of existence. Investigating the patterns and distinctions in Catholics’ Kulturkampf activism illustrates how Catholics understood the Church-State conflict, making clear what various groups within the Catholic community felt was at stake in the struggle, as well as how external factors such as the hegemonic contemporary discourses surrounding gender roles, class status, age and social roles, the division of public and private, and the feminization of religion influenced their activism. -

WMF1 9/13/2004 5:36 PM Page 10 The Christian Movement 1 in the Second and Third Centuries 1Christians in the Roman Empire 2 The First Theologians 3Constructing Christian Churches 1Christians in the Roman Empire We begin at the beginning of the second century, a time of great stress as Christians struggled to explain their religious beliefs to their Roman neighbors, to create liturgies that expressed their beliefs and values, and to face persecution and martyrdom cour- ageously. It may seem odd to omit discussion of the life and times of Christianity’s founder, but scholarly exploration of the first century of the common era is itself a field requiring a specific expertise. Rather than focus on Christian beginnings directly, we will refer to them as necessitated by later interpretations of scripture, liturgy, and practice. Second-century Christians were diverse, unorganized, and geographically scattered. Paul’s frequent advocacy of unity among Christian communities gives the impression of a unity that was in fact largely rhetorical. Before we examine Christian movements, however, it is important to remind ourselves that Christians largely shared the world- view and social world of their neighbors. Polarizations of “Christians” and “pagans” obscure the fact that Christians were Romans. They participated fully in Roman culture and economic life; they were susceptible, like their neighbors, to epidemic disease and the anxieties and excitements of city life. As such, they were repeatedly shocked to be singled out by the Roman state for persecution and execution on the basis of their faith.
