The review of literature has highlighted that there exist a number of “theme restaurant” outside India. Few, such types of restaurants were found in India too. The observation sheet was used to gather the details for developing case studies on the existing interior features of the monuments. The findings of the case studies highlighted that the colonial monuments were having white colored walls. The existing floors were made up of wood and in majority of areas it was made up of marble and granite with geometrical pattern in them. The walls of the monuments were having mouldings. In the name of furnishings and lightings, the lights were replaced by the new lights and there were no furnishings.

Email: [email protected] Abstract Indian travel writings in English exclusively on Kolkata have been rare even though tourist guidebooks such as the Lonely Planet have dedicated sections on the city. In such a scenario, Amit Chaudhuri’s Calcutta: Two Years in the City (2016) and Bishwanath Ghosh’s Longing Belonging: An Outsider at Home in Calcutta (2014) stand out as exceptions. Both these narratives, written by probashi (expatriate) Bengalis, represent Kolkata though a bifocal lens. On the one hand, their travels are a journey towards rediscovering their Bengali roots and on the other, their representation/construction of the city of Kolkata is as hard-boiled as any seasoned traveller. The contention of this paper is that both Chaudhuri and Ghosh foreground certain selected/pre- determined signifiers that are common to Kolkata for the purpose of their representation which are instrumental in constructing the ‘gaze’ of their readers towards the city. This process of ‘gaze’ construction is studied by applying John Urry and Jonas Larsen’s conceptualization of the ‘tourist gaze’.

Its objective is to encourage the interdisciplinary and comparative study of Asia and to promote (inter)national cooperation. Kolkata .... the city of Joy Kolkata- The Capital city, popularly known as The 'City of Joy'. The city is dipped in history, art & culture, sports and socio-cultural activities. This was the erstwhile capital of the British Raj, and thus has architectural gems strewn all around. The city has its appeal for all visitors, with a medley of interest. From architectural wonders to swanky malls, from religious places to centres for performing arts, from historical colleges & universities to state-of-the-art stadiums. Attractions & Tours Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta in English, is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal and is located in eastern India on the east bank of the River Hooghly. The city was a colonial city developed by the British East India Company and then by the British Empire. Kolkata was the capital of the British Indian empire until 1911 when the capital was relocated to Delhi. Kolkata grew rapidly in the 19th century to become the second city of the British Empire. This was accompanied by the development of a culture that fused European philosophies with Indian tradition. During the British colonial era from 1700 to 1912 Kolkata was the capital of British India. Kolkata witnessed a spate of frenzied construction activity in the early 1850s by several British companies. The construction was largely influenced by the conscious intermingling of Neo-Gothic, Baroque, Neo- Classical, and Oriental designs. Unlike many north Indian cities, whose construction stresses minimalism, much of the layout of the architectural variety in Kolkata owes its origins from European styles and tastes imported mainly by the British, and lesser extent of the Portuguese and French.

The grant has been used in all the endeavours of the College for the improvement of the teaching-learning process, in fostering research, in raising consciousness about the environment and community welfare, sensitization towards women’s issues and in motivating students to strive for a global academic standard. New courses have been introduced and a few which are in the pipeline will begin as the second part of the second part of the building structure is completed. Observations made reveal that students do and are able to fit themselves in various types of employment worldwide and show, high competency. The faculty members have shown interest in research activities, guiding research at the UG Level and in the organization of events by inviting eminent academicians as guest lecturers; all the high standards are achievable with an efficient network of associations towards the mission of being and the students who have done us proud. On December 30, 2016, Loreto (South Asia) commemorated 175 of dedicated service to women and the girl child in India. It was on the same date in 1841 that a band of young Irish Sisters first set foot on Indian soil at Babughat in Kolkata.
