The Panthers dropped a 45-41 Aug. 31st at Texas Southern W, 44-23 heartbreaker to Alcorn State despite dominating the Braves to the tune of racking up Week 2 508 yards of offense, with senior running back Dawonya Tucker rushing for 128 yards. Sept. 7th at Houston L, 17-37 The Panthers defeatd the Tigers in a thrilling 22-16 contest in the 93rd State Fair Week 3 Classic., snapping a four-game skid in the series. Sept. 14th Nicholls State L, 35-42 Week 4 TIGERS AT A GLANCE: Grambling State has gotten off to a very rocky start, sitting Sept. 21st at Alcorn State L, 45-41 at 0-3 after opening confernce play with a 20-23 loss to Alabama State. However, the Week 5 (State Fair Classic) Sept. 28th Grambling State 4 p.m. Tigers’ record may not be indicative of the team’s level of play, as the perennial Week 6 contender dropped a pair of one-possession games and is one of two league teams Oct. 12th at Southern 6 p.m. - ESPN3 (UAPB) that fields a total offense and total defense both ranked in the top-5 among Week 7 (Homecoming) conference members. Quarterback Geremy Hickbottom leads the team with 580 yards Oct 19th Virginia - Lynchburg 2 p.m. passing with a 3:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. In addition to completing 62.4 Week 8 percent of his passes, Hickbottom also leads the team in rushing with 196 yards on the Oct. 24th Jackson State 6:30 p.m. - ESPNU ground, the most among SWAC quarterbacks. Week 9 Nov. 9th Arkansas - Pine Bluff 2 p.m. OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION: Fans can possibly expect a lot of big plays on offense, though Week 10 both sides generally get things done a bit differently. For PVAMU, quarterback Jalen Nov. 16th Edward Waters 2 p.m. Morton’s 1026 passing yards and nine passing touchdowns powers a Panthers passing Week 11 (Turkey Day Classic) Nov. 28th at Alabama State TBD attack that leads the SWAC with 1,228 passing yards, good for a average of 307 yards per game. Grambling prefers the groundwork, as the Tigers have averaged 233.3 rushing yards per game, the second-best mark in the confernce. 2018 Schedule (5-6, SWAC 4-3) RESISTANCE IS FUTILE: The Panthers will once again be challenged with figuring out Aug. 25 at Rice L, 28-31 a stingy defense, as Grambling ranks No. 2 in scoring defense, allowing a shade over SWAC-MEAC Challenge 24 points per game. However, as evidenced by their scoring prowess particularly over Sept. 2 North Carolina Central W, 40-24 the past two weeks, Prairie View A&M has had no problem putting points on the board, averaging 40.5 in its past two games. The Panthers have averaged 27.0 points per game Sept. 8 at Sam Houston State L, 32-41 over the last nine meetings versus Grambling State. Sept. 15 at UNLV L, 17-46 MEET AT THE QUARTERBACK: Prairie View A&M’s defense ranks seventh in the country with 14 sacks through four games, good for 3.5 per contest. Linebacker Tre’Shaud Smith Sept. 22 at Arkansas Pine-Bluff W, 62-13 State Fair Classic leads the team with 3, but the Panthers’ pass-rush has been multi-faceted as six Sept. 29 at Grambling State W, 22-16 different players have taken down the quarterback at least once this season. Oct. 13 Southern L, 0-38 TAKING THE LONG WAY HOME: Grambling State leads the SWAC with 25.7 first downs Homecoming per game. PVAMU coach Eric Dooley has stressed shortening the opponent’s drives Oct. 27 Alcorn State L, 13-27 this week as this may be a point of concern for the Panthers, who have allowed 25 first downs per game, second-most among league teams. However, no team in the SWAC Nov. 3 at Jackson State L, 28-34 has been better at extending its own drives than the Panthers. Prairie View A&M ranks number one in the contest in third-down conversion percentage, as the Panthers are Nov. 17 Alabama State W, 66-13 successful on 44.6 percent of its third-down attempts (25-of-56), just ahead of Grambling State (20-of-45, 44.4 percent). APBA 1960 Football Season Card Set The following players comprise the 1960 season APBA Football Player Card Set. The regular starters at each position are listed first and should be used most frequently. Realistic use of the players below will generate statistical results remarkably similar to those from real life. IMPORTANT: When a Red "K" appears in the R-column as the result on any kind of running play from scrimmage or on any return, roll the dice again, refer to the K-column, and use the number there for the result. When a player has a "K" in his R-column, he can never be used for kicking or punting. If the symbol "F-K" or "F-P" appears on a players card, it means that you use the K or P column when he recovers a fumble. • Fantastic Finishes Three Weeks with the 1960 New York Titans
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 21, No. 1 (1999) Fantastic Finishes Three Weeks with the 1960 New York Titans By William J. Ryczek When the AFL commenced operations in 1960, it was difficult to predict the performance of each team. The clubs had no track record, they ran hundreds of prospects through their training camps, and many players they were depending on had little or no professional experience. Prior to the start of the season, Sports Illustrated ranked the Chargers, Oilers and Patriots as the three best teams in the league, based upon their performances during the exhibition season. The Broncos and Titans were judged the weakest. Denver not only played bad, they looked bad, sporting hideous socks with broad vertical stripes. The stockings were so unattractive that Joe Pagliei, a fullback who wound up with the Titans, refused to negotiate with Denver after he saw their uniforms. “I didn’t like the way Denver’s socks looked,” he recalled. “They looked like hell. I said, ‘I’ve got big legs, they won’t look good on me.’” The Broncos lost all of their exhibition games, one to the Patriots by a 43-6 margin, and were outscored 200-53 overall. Boston was therefore established as a 16 point favorite when they played Denver in the new league’s first game on September 9. The underdog Broncos surprised everyone by taking the lead on a 76 yard punt return by Gene Mingo and a 59 yard screen pass and run from quarterback Frank Tripucka to Al Carmichael. The defense thwarted a late Patriot rally and Denver held on for a 13-10 upset win.
