The Panthers dropped a 45-41 Aug. 31st at Texas Southern W, 44-23 heartbreaker to Alcorn State despite dominating the Braves to the tune of racking up Week 2 508 yards of offense, with senior running back Dawonya Tucker rushing for 128 yards. Sept. 7th at Houston L, 17-37 The Panthers defeatd the Tigers in a thrilling 22-16 contest in the 93rd State Fair Week 3 Classic., snapping a four-game skid in the series. Sept. 14th Nicholls State L, 35-42 Week 4 TIGERS AT A GLANCE: Grambling State has gotten off to a very rocky start, sitting Sept. 21st at Alcorn State L, 45-41 at 0-3 after opening confernce play with a 20-23 loss to Alabama State. However, the Week 5 (State Fair Classic) Sept. 28th Grambling State 4 p.m. Tigers’ record may not be indicative of the team’s level of play, as the perennial Week 6 contender dropped a pair of one-possession games and is one of two league teams Oct. 12th at Southern 6 p.m. - ESPN3 (UAPB) that fields a total offense and total defense both ranked in the top-5 among Week 7 (Homecoming) conference members. Quarterback Geremy Hickbottom leads the team with 580 yards Oct 19th Virginia - Lynchburg 2 p.m. passing with a 3:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. In addition to completing 62.4 Week 8 percent of his passes, Hickbottom also leads the team in rushing with 196 yards on the Oct. 24th Jackson State 6:30 p.m. - ESPNU ground, the most among SWAC quarterbacks. Week 9 Nov. 9th Arkansas - Pine Bluff 2 p.m. OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION: Fans can possibly expect a lot of big plays on offense, though Week 10 both sides generally get things done a bit differently. For PVAMU, quarterback Jalen Nov. 16th Edward Waters 2 p.m. Morton’s 1026 passing yards and nine passing touchdowns powers a Panthers passing Week 11 (Turkey Day Classic) Nov. 28th at Alabama State TBD attack that leads the SWAC with 1,228 passing yards, good for a average of 307 yards per game. Grambling prefers the groundwork, as the Tigers have averaged 233.3 rushing yards per game, the second-best mark in the confernce. 2018 Schedule (5-6, SWAC 4-3) RESISTANCE IS FUTILE: The Panthers will once again be challenged with figuring out Aug. 25 at Rice L, 28-31 a stingy defense, as Grambling ranks No. 2 in scoring defense, allowing a shade over SWAC-MEAC Challenge 24 points per game. However, as evidenced by their scoring prowess particularly over Sept. 2 North Carolina Central W, 40-24 the past two weeks, Prairie View A&M has had no problem putting points on the board, averaging 40.5 in its past two games. The Panthers have averaged 27.0 points per game Sept. 8 at Sam Houston State L, 32-41 over the last nine meetings versus Grambling State. Sept. 15 at UNLV L, 17-46 MEET AT THE QUARTERBACK: Prairie View A&M’s defense ranks seventh in the country with 14 sacks through four games, good for 3.5 per contest. Linebacker Tre’Shaud Smith Sept. 22 at Arkansas Pine-Bluff W, 62-13 State Fair Classic leads the team with 3, but the Panthers’ pass-rush has been multi-faceted as six Sept. 29 at Grambling State W, 22-16 different players have taken down the quarterback at least once this season. Oct. 13 Southern L, 0-38 TAKING THE LONG WAY HOME: Grambling State leads the SWAC with 25.7 first downs Homecoming per game. PVAMU coach Eric Dooley has stressed shortening the opponent’s drives Oct. 27 Alcorn State L, 13-27 this week as this may be a point of concern for the Panthers, who have allowed 25 first downs per game, second-most among league teams. However, no team in the SWAC Nov. 3 at Jackson State L, 28-34 has been better at extending its own drives than the Panthers. Prairie View A&M ranks number one in the contest in third-down conversion percentage, as the Panthers are Nov. 17 Alabama State W, 66-13 successful on 44.6 percent of its third-down attempts (25-of-56), just ahead of Grambling State (20-of-45, 44.4 percent).
