The Historically Black College and University football games continue to grow and thrive, and remain a proud staple in the Cotton Bowl, at Fair Park for over 25 years. Welcome to the 2021 State Fair Classic!
This annual gridiron clash between the Grambling State University Tigers and the Prairie View A&M University Panthers is one of the most highly anticipated games of the season. On and off the field, the spirit of excitement and friendly rivalry pervades the Cotton Bowl.
I know as we look around the stadium it’s not the typical crowd that we normally expect for this great game day experience. We are doing our very best to follow appropriate CDC and the Department of Health guidelines, so I thank you for your support and cooperation as we have traveled to support Coach Broderick Fobbs, the coaching staff and, of course, our outstanding G- Men football team.
I would also like to extend warm greetings, on behalf of the GSU family, to Dr. Ruth Simmons, President of Prairie View A&M University, the Panther coaching staff, team and loyal fans.
Grambling State University is proud to be a part of this annual event in the great city of Dallas. We express our sincere appreciation to all of our corporate sponsors for their sustained support and commitment to both universities in our joint mission of educating the nation’s future leaders.

The State Fair Classic held annually at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas began in 1925 featuring the Wiley Wildcats and Langston Lions. Both teams met four consecutive years in Dallas before Prairie View replaced Langston in 1929. Wiley wasn’t the only college to play PV in the State Fair. The Panthers battled Tennessee State in 1958 and Texas Southern in 1959. After relocating to Dallas in 1961, Bishop College eventually took Wiley’s place in the annual contest in the 43rd classic in 1967. It wasn’t until 1992 that the classic would see the annual PVAMU-GSU showdown. Since 1992, this has been the annual match-up held at the State Fair Classic.
