THE END OF AN ERA NEW FOOTBALL STADIUM The 2014 campaign will mark the final Rendering of the new PVAMU football stadium season of play at historic Blackshear Field for which is slated to open in 2016 the Panthers. The stadium was erected at its current site in the late 1940s and has under- gone several renovations over the decades. However, with a limited seating capacity of 6,000 fans and limited space in the press- box, Prairie View A&M has had to move several of its high profile games off campus to the Houston area over the years as a result.

PANTHER FOOTBALL // 8 2014 PRAIRIE VIEW A&M PANTHER FOOTBALL 2014 SEASON PREVIEW EXPECTATIONS ARE HIGH AS PRAIRIE VIEW A&M PUTS THE 2013 CAMPAIGN IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR PROJECTED STRENGTHS: Nine starters are back on the offensive side of the ball as the Panthers featured one of the top offensive units in the nation last season. Senior quarterback Jerry Lovelocke is one of the top passers in the SWAC along with the dangerous 1-2 running back tandem of Johnta’ Hebert and Courtney Brown. The offensive line features senior leaders Dillon Bonnet and Tre Glover while the special teams unit return intact.

EARLY QUESTION: Once again, will the defense return to the level it displayed in the mid-2000s? How will the defense adjust to new coordinator Cliff Yoshida? Who’ll pick the slack up for departed senior and record breaking wideout Deandre Cooper? How will the Panthers respond to lack of practice time due to APR restrictions and a 10-game schedule?

TOP AWARDS CANDIDATES: Center Dillon Bonnet earned All-SWAC First team honors in 2013 while quarterback Jerry Lovelocke and linebacker Jerome Howard were named second team All-SWAC last season. Johnta’ Hebert and Courtney Brown combined for nearly 2,000 yards at running back last season.

On paper, the 2013 Prairie View A&M University foot- ball season could’ve been labeled a success due to a plethora of feats not seen on the gridiron in quite some time. The Panthers shattered 36 long-standing school records, defeated a Southland Conference program for the first time since 1985 and featured an offensive unit which ranked amongst the nation’s best. However, those closely associated with the program marked it as a disappointment due to the fact that a SWAC Western Division Championship slipped away despite having a firm grip on the berth. Last season, the Panthers dropped two critical over- time contests in which they held late leads in the fourth quarter. The Panthers also struggled on the defensive side of the ball as they failed to get timely stops when needed. What also stung was the fact that the Panthers were leading in nearly every game they lost coupled with losing an opportunity to represent the SWAC West in the annual championship game which was moved to their seven starters are back from last season but with a new, backyard in Houston, Texas. coordinator, scheme and a recruiting class which looks The roles have switched over the past decade as the to contribute immediately, the unit has the potential to offensive unit will be called upon to carry the load early feature an entirely different look as the season progress. on in the season as the defensive side of the ball will be under its fourth defensive coordinator in four seasons. Backup quarterback De’Auntre Smiley also returns and provides the team a luxury as he was a former starter two seasons ago in addition to possessing offensive firepower when needed.

RUNNING BACK The Louisiana-inspired backfield of senior Courtney Brown and junior Johnta’ Hebert return as the Panthers should be in good hands with this potent 1-2 combina- tion. Brown became the first player since 2008 to sur- pass the 1,000-yard mark while Hebert nearly joined him as he’s coming off a 916-yard season. Both players are also valuable in the passing game as they combined to catch 91 passes for 765 yards.

WIDE RECEIVER At wideout, the Panthers will have to replace all-time single season record holder Deandre Cooper, who to- taled 1,033 yards on 80 receptions in 2013. However, DEFENSE the cupboard is not bare as nearly the entire unit returns Defensively, head coach Heishma Northern has with senior Jacoby Anderson expected to step in and made it a priority to return the unit to the success it had produce along with Patrick Gant, Gabe Dunlap, Greg under his watch in the late 2000s. Bryant had 50 tackles in his first season and should flourish in a scheme which has produced dominant defensive ends.

LINEBACKER At linebacker, senior Jerome Howard is back after a career season which consisted of him finishing with 91 tackles and 19.5 tackles for loss. Danny Brownell also returns as the unit will look entirely different as gradua- tion claimed the loss of two of the unit’s top tacklers.

SECONDARY The secondary was never settled last season with a variety of starting lineups used as the majority of the unit saw action for the time on the FCS ranks. Statistically, the unit posted big tackle numbers which were mislead- ing due to the fact that they were on the field often. With another year of seasoning, more will be ex- pected as cornerbacks Deitrich Johnson, Foster Brown II and Joshua Holley all return along with safe- ties Robert Jackson III and David Metcalf. Similar to the defensive line spot, newcomers from the 2014 re- cruiting class will possibly be asked to contribute imme- diately.

SPECIAL TEAMS The Panthers should be in good hands on special teams as the only spot the coaching staff needs to re- place is the holder. Johnta’ Hebert is back as the all- time PVAMU leader in kickoff return yardage along with Gabe Dunlap and Anthony Wiltz at punt returner. Sen- ior punter Travis Jatzlau averaged 40.9 yards punts per game last season while Christopher Barrick is ex- pected to bounce back as the team’s field goal kicker. Fellow senior Michael Cottingham emerged as a surprise as he recorded 19 touchbacks in his first season as PVAMU’s kickoff specialist.
