SILVER HEIGHTS FARM Certified Organic, Open Pollinated Unusual & Heirloom Vegetable Plants DEDICATED TO THE PRESERVATION OF HEIRLOOM PLANTS 2008 Catalog Featuring varieties to dazzle the gardener’s imagination Multitudes of Tomatoes, Tomatillos, & Ground Cherries Peppers & Eggplants galore Glorious Cucumbers, Gherkins, & melons Other funky vegetables 1 BECOME A SEED SAVER AND HELP PROTECT OUR AGRI-CULTURAL HERITAGE TOMATO SEEDS CAN BE SAVED FOR 4 TO 10 YEARS WITHOUT MUCH DIFFICULTY. SO SAVE A FEW SEEDS OF YOUR FAVORITE VARIETY THIS YEAR The flower structure of most tomatoes is set up for a very high rate of self-pollination. Possible cross- pollination can happen by exposure to the “currant” types of tomatoes, L. pimpinellifolium. Potato-leafed varieties and the double flowered beefsteak types are also possible sources of cross-pollination. With currant types, potato-leafed varieties and double-flowered varieties, isolation is important due to elongated styles and exposed stigmas. Caging is useful when many of these easily cross-pollinated varieties are planted. Wind helps with good pollination of tomato flowers. The agitation of breezes can be enhanced with a daily gentle shaking of the tomato plants, especially when the plants are grown indoors. Do not select early fruits of tomatoes for seed saving. Instead, select tomatoes formed after the initial cold of spring is gone and the tomato plant is in good production. Also avoid fruits from diseased plants, as diseases can be passed from year to year through seeds. Choose fully ripe fruits that have the shape, color or other characteristics you are interested in. Cut your chosen tomatoes across their “equator” and scoop all the gel and seeds into a container.

Tomatoes Henderson's Pink Ponderosa Tomato 87 days. Huge size, some over 2 lbs., a meaty pink-red beefsteak introduced by Peter Henderson & Co. in 1891, and the most famous of their varieties. Their 1903 catalog said "Quality Beyond Praise, Rich and meaty-sliced. Thick and delicious canned." Still popular with gardeners. Yoder's German Yellow Tomato 80-90 days. This regular-leafed variety produces large yellow/pale orange beefsteak type fruit. Fairly crack resistant and can grow as large as 1 pound. Good flavor. From Amish lady Mrs. Yoder, whose family grew this tomato for over half a century in Tennessee and Kentucky Costoluto Genovese Tomato The fluted, old Italian favorite that has been around since the early 19th century. Fruit are rather flattened and quite attractive with their deep ribbing. This variety is a standard in Italy for both fresh eating and preserving; known for its intensely flavorful, deep red flesh. This variety has also became very popular with chefs in this country. Douchoua Pepper Tomato Graceful bell-pepper-shaped fruits, about the size of large plums, have a lovely cream white to yellow color. Flavor is good with just the right amount of acid, but fruit is not super juicy, being firm and quite crunchy, refreshing and delicious. Fruit very free of imperfections. The overall yield is strong. It would make an attractive and unique specialty market variety. Duggin’s White 80 days. Parchment-white tomatoes are extra smooth and beautiful. Renowned for their sweet, citrus taste that is richer and more complex than many white types.

  • Casey's Heirloom Tomatoes of Airdrie
Casey’s Heirloom Tomatoes of Airdrie Seeds for 2006 Jeffrey Casey jwlcasey@shaw.ca Casey’s Heirloom Tomatoes of Airdrie page 1/22 Introduction It is with great pleasure that I offer the following heirloom tomato seed catalogue for your perusal. My love for growing vegetables has grown exponentially from my first miniscule plot out behind my teachers’ housing unit in a small town in Hokkaido, Japan to my current garden in which I grew 85 different tomato varieties last year. Growing heirloom tomatoes has turned me into a passionate hobbyist so much so that I firmly believe that others should also grow them and this provided the genesis for this catalogue. The exact definition of an heirloom tomato may evoke controversy amongst some growers but I prefer to think of a heirloom as “something of value that can be passed on to the next generation”. Our forefathers practised diligently the time honoured tradition of saving the seed from the harvest to be planted again the following year. It is precisely because someone took the time to save the seed A single days’ harvest for a variety they thought was delicious enough to grow the following year that I am able to offer a wide range of heirloom tomatoes in terms of shapes, sizes, colours, flavours and textures. I have tried my utmost to research the history of each variety and provide it for you, however, some varietal histories are unfortunately lost in time. I have done my utmost to ensure the purity of my seeds that I offer by bagging the blossoms and fermenting the seeds.
