Wir haben Czernowitz geerbt mit seiner unvergleichlich verklebten und magischen Trauben-Aura, mit allem möglichen fremden Nachkriegsvolk, den vollgestellten Höfen, wo fremdländische (rumänische? deutsche?) Inschriften sich in unleserlichen, unheilvollen Zeichen durch den Putz an den Wänden drücken. Wir haben die Stadt mit all ihren Verlusten geerbt. Juri Andruchowytsch1 Pascha dreht sich zum ausgeschlagenen Fenster und entdeckt im dichten gelben Mond- licht die Maserung – kaum sichtbar, wie mit dem Griffel gezeichnet, aus der harten Stein- oberfläche herausgedrückt. Er berührt sie mit dem Finger und spürt die kalten Narben im Stein, die feinen Einkerbungen und Schnitte auf der Oberfläche. Was für eine seltsame Malerei, denkt er, wer hat das wohl eingezeichnet? „Das ist Farn“, wiederholt der Metallkopf. „Er ist eine Million Jahre alt. Und wie alt bist du?“, fragte er Pascha. „Fünfunddreißig“, antwortete Pascha verwirrt. „Und der hier – eine Million“, erinnert ihn der Soldat. 9 „Und was weiter?“, fragt Pascha verständnislos. „Alles“, erklärt ihm der Soldat, wie einem Kind. „Eine Million. Du und ich, wir waren noch nicht geboren, und er war schon eine Million Jahre alt. Du und ich, wir werden ver- recken, und er wird weiter hier liegen. Geschichte, verstehst Du? Das ist Geschichte. Du und ich aber, wir sind keine Geschichte: Heute gibt es uns, und morgen nicht mehr. Ich habe das aus dem Museum mitgenommen“, erklärte er. „Wozu?“, fragt Pascha. „Was wozu?“, fragt ihn der Soldat mit Nachdruck. „Wozu hast du es mitgenommen?“,

BUKOVINIAN STATESMAN AND DIPLOMAT Oleksandr DOBRZHANSKYI Yurii Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University (Ukraine) E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The article is dedicated to the study of the political biography of Nikolaj von Wassilko, a well-known Bukovinian leader, one of the most controversial personages among Ukrainian politicians of Austria-Hungary at the end of the 19th – the beginning of the 20th century. It is worth mentioning that many scientists from various countries wrote about N. Wassilko, but separate studies about his life and political activities have not been written yet. Author paid considerable attention to the formation of N. Wassilko's political views, the evolution of his preferences from conservative Rusynism and Moscophilia philosophy to the populistic doctrine. Since the beginning of the 20th century, N. Wassilko became almost the sole leader of Ukrainians in Bukovina. The article presents the analysis of his activities in the Austrian Parliament, the Diet of Bukovina, public organizations, and his initiatives to resolve various regional issues. His activities in the years of World War I were equally rich. In particular, the article shows his diplomatic activities as the ambassador of the ZUNR (West Ukrainian People's Republic) in Vienna, the ambassador of the UPR (Ukrainian People's Republic) in Switzerland and other countries. At the end of the research, the author points out the remarkable path of N. Wassilko in the history of the Ukrainian movement in Bukovina in the early twentieth century, as one of the central figures of the Ukrainian diplomacy during 1918-1924.

    THE VIENNA PROJECT: JEWISH COMMUNITIES OF LEOPOLDSTADT AND ALSERGRUND Site 1A: Introduction to Jewish Life in Leopoldstadt Leopoldstadt, 1020 The history of Jews in Austria is one of repeated exile (der Vertreibene) and return. In 1624, after years and years of being forbidden from living in Vienna, Emperor Ferdinand III decided that Jewish people could return to Vienna but would only be allowed to live in one area outside of central Vienna. That area was called “Unterer Werd” and later became the district of Leopoldstadt. In 1783, Joseph II’s “Toleranzpatent” eased a lot of the restrictions that kept Jews from holding certain jobs or owning homes in areas outside of Leopoldstadt. As a result, life in Vienna became much more open and pleasant for Jewish people, and many more Jewish immigrants began moving to Vienna. Leopoldstadt remained the cultural center of Jewish life, and was nicknamed “Mazzeinsel” after the traditional Jewish matzo bread. Jews made up 40% of the people living in the 2nd district, and about 29% of the city’s Jewish population lived there. A lot of Jewish businesses were located in Leopoldstadt, as well as many of the city’s synagogues and temples. Tens of thousands of Galician Jewish refugees from Eastern Europe made their home there, and brought many of their traditions (such as Yiddish literature) with them. What were some of the restrictions on Jewish life in Vienna before the “Toleranzpatent” in 1783? What further rights did Jewish people gain in 1860? How did this affect Jewish life and culture in Vienna in the late 1800s and early 1900s? Describe the culture of Leopoldstadt before 1938.

The diaries describe Rubinstein’s adolescent years in Sadagora, his service in the Austrian Army in World War I, his marriage and life in Czernowitz in the inter-war years, life in German-occupied Czernowitz from 1941-1944, and his family’s post-war journey to Romania, Austria, Italy, and eventually Israel. The diaries also contain poetry and stories from Rubinstein, signed under his pen name of Ben-Saar. In addition, the collection contains a portrait photograph of the Czernowitz Hairdressers Academy, 1936, to which Pinus Rubinstein belonged and a visiting card for Ben-Saar (P. Rubinstein), in his role as chairman of the organization "Poale Tsedek," in Beit She'an, Israel.     Battle of the Mincio River Age of Eagles Scenario by GRW, 2008 SETTING Date: 8 February 1814, 10:00 AM Location: 10 miles south of Lake Garda, Italy Combatants: French Empire & Kingdom of Italy vs. Austria History: As Napoleon retreated behind the Rhine River following a crushing defeat at Leipzig, the Sixth Coalition pressed their advance on other fronts. In northern Italy, a veteran Austrian army of 35,000 men under Field Marshal Heinrich von Bellegarde sought to reestablish Austrian dominance over Italy. A major victory would enable the Austrians to link up with the recent defector and King of Naples, Joachim Murat. Standing between these two forces was a conscript army of 34,000 men commanded by Napoleon’s stepson, Eugene de Beauharnais. Eugene sought to attack and destroy the Austrian field army before dealing with Murat’s Neapolitans, and toward this end, he intended to quickly concrete his scattered divisions on the east bank of the Mincio River, near the town of Villafranca. Unbeknownst to the French, the Austrian army was not concentrated near Villafranca. Field Marshal Bellegarde mistakenly believed the French were retreating to the west, and had begun to send his divisions across the Mincio River in pursuit. When February 8, 1814 dawned, both armies straddled the river at different points, and neither commander realized the intentions of the other. Since Romania holds a rich tourism heritage and a great tourism potential, the tourism division into zones was drawn up as “a possibility toward a superior and complex development of the tourism resources, in a unified vision…” (Erdeli, Gheorghilaş, 2006, p. 264), this representing a permanent concern of the specialists from all fields that are related to the tourism management. Although the criteria for selection and ranking of the tourist attractions have been the subject of some controversies, regarding the types of tourism that can be practiced in these areas, there were arrived almost unanimous conclusions. In order to ensure the representativeness and considering that all historical regions of the contemporary Romania are to the same extent micro- destinations with a substantial “tourism heritage”, the regions of Moldavia (including Bukovina) and Maramureş were merged into one for the elaboration of the research that presents, in essence, the main types of tourism and a part of the treasury of Romanian age-old heritage.     The Seitenstetten-Tempel or The Stadttempel The so called Stadttempel in the Seitenstettengasse 4, 1010 Vienna, is Vienna's main and oldest Synagogue. It was built in the years 1824- 1826 in a Neo-Classical style after the plans of the well known Austrian Architect J. Kornhäusel (1). It was officially opened on the 9th of April 1826 and the first Rabbi of the Stadttempel was Isak Noa Mannheimer. It was constructed similar to a residential building because at that time only churches were allowed to be free-standing. The Nazis did not dare to burn it down in the Reichskristallnacht (9th/10th November 1938) since there was the risk that the neighboring houses would go up in flames as well. All the other synagogues in Vienne were destroyed. It also had a school and a mikvah (2) inside it. The interior, which was destroyed by the Nazis, was reconstructed and restored after the war. The synagogue was built behind a residential building. It was built as a long oval domed central room and is toped with an umbrella like dome. Around the oval main prayer hall are twelve Ionic columns supporting the second and the third gallery. On the ground floor only men are allowed to pray, while women have to go to the 2nd and 3rd gallery. The Bimah (3) is on the east side of the hall. Above the Bimah are the Tablets of the Law within a golden sunburst and the dome is painted in blue with golden stars. It was one of the most innovative structures in Vienna at the time of its erection and it served as a model for other synagogue buildings in Western Europe.
