Fourteen years later, RT has become a self- described tool for information warfare and is under increasing scrutiny from the United States government for allegedly fomenting unrest and undermining democracy. It has also grown far beyond its television roots, achieving a broad diffusion across a variety of digital platforms.

Common sense warning: The book you are about to read is dangerous. If you are from the English language media sphere, virtually everything you may think you know about contemporary Rus- sia; its political system, leaders, economy, population, so-called opposition, foreign policy and much more is either seriously flawed or just plain wrong. This has not happened by accident. This book explains why. This book is also about gross double standards, hypocrisy, and venal stupidity with western media playing the role of willing accomplice. After reading this interesting tome, you might reconsider everything you “learn” from mainstream media about Russia and the world. • Russia and the US in the Middle East: Policies and Contexts
Conflict Studies Research Centre Middl e East Series 06/27 Defence Academy of the United Kingdom Russia and the US in the Middle East: Policies and Contexts Prof Stephen Blank Key Points * Russian Policy in the Middle East is increasingly driven by a determination to check American power and influence there. * This determination is equally driven by a fierce desire for global power status and recogntion, and even though it is couched in the language and ideology of multipolarity, is essentially no less unilateral than is US policy. * Russia’s competition with America is no less a contest over values than one over interests. 06/27 Russia and the US in the Middle East: Policies and Contexts Prof Stephen Blank Introduction America’s invasion of Iraq and efforts to establish a Pax Americana throughout the Middle East have created major difficulties for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his foreign policy. Indeed, America’s actions, in the contexts of contemporary world politics and of Russia's development within that environment, have enmeshed Moscow’s Middle Eastern policy in multiple contradictions. These contradictions are most basically expressed in Russia’s reaction to this Pax Americana, namely its simultaneous efforts to build a structure of international partnerships with other major powers against US unilateralism while also proclaiming that is America’s partner in the war against terrorism and, most importantly, retaining at all costs a free hand in the CIS. Indeed, the three dimensions of foreign policy sum up what Russia means by the concept of multipolarity in its foreign policy, a concept that has resurfaced since the US invasion of Iraq.

Monday, May 24, 2021 | No. 169 When Star Wars opened May 25, 1977 no one but Steven Spielberg thought it would be a hit. George Lucas had been turned down by Universal, United Artists and Disney before pitching 20th Century Fox his sci-fi epic inspired by 1930's serials like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers, the 1966 TV series Star Trek and Frank Herbert's 1965 novel Dune. Fox creative affairs chief Alan Ladd, Jr. greenlighted SW, but Fox's distribution arm never considered it a likely hit. Fox marketers wanted to change the title because moviegoers might think Star Wars was about the Vietnam War or, perhaps, superstars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton's divorce. When Lucas screened a rough cut for some director pals, they weren't impressed. Brian De Palma reportedly called it the "worst movie" ever made. Spielberg, however, predicted SW would be "the biggest movie of all time." Lucas thought SW was doomed and skipped its premiere to vacation with Spielberg in Hawaii where they heard SW was a boxoffice phenomenon and then came up with a new project to do together -- Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), the first Indiana Jones blockbuster. Exhibitors were reluctant to book SW, thinking only kids and sci-fi buffs would buy tickets, so it opened at just 32 theatres. Two days later, it was in 43 theatres and a week later in 157. It peaked in mid-August at 1,096, a very wide run then. Produced for $11 million, its original release did $461 million domestically and $196 million abroad – huge numbers at Theatrical Poster for Star Wars, the time.

  • Yelena Osipova Russian Public Diplomacy New Russian Public
Yelena Osipova Russian Public Diplomacy New Russian Public Diplomacy: Conceptualization, Practice and Limitations Abstract: As Russia recovered from its chaotic days of the 1990s, its leaders became increasingly concerned about their country’s international image and standing. There was also increasing recognition that in the information age formal as well as “new” public diplomacy (PD) have become integral components in any international actor’s pursuit of interests. Hence, as Russia began to clarify its identity and global role – for itself as well as for the international community – it also started to pay increasing attention to its PD, particularly in its “near abroad”, which it still regards as its own sphere of influence, and the West, where it seeks recognition and acceptance. However, Russia’s political and strategic culture does not encourage decentralized and networked approaches, while top-down and state-supported initiatives largely get dismissed as propaganda by the Western public. Given the prevalence of historical stereotypes and selective perception, Russian PD would benefit greatly from relationships between non-state actors, as well as non-traditional and alternative information approaches that harness the potential of new media and social networking. This paper will examine the discussion of PD within Russia and will look at several examples of its practical limitations within the context of New PD. Introduction Over the past decade, as Russia recovered from its dark chaotic days of the 1990s, the Russian leadership has been making an increasing effort not only to consolidate social and political order at home, but also to enhance Russia’s international status. However, as data from Gallup – surveying public opinion in close to 100 countries worldwide – suggests, the approval of Russia’s “global leadership” role still remains the lowest among the seven major international actors (Clifton, 2011).

Forum on Religion and Ecology at Yale http://fore.yale.edu/ Religion and Ecology News Articles November – December 2016 November 2, 2016 Why understanding Native American religion is important for resolving the Dakota Access Pipeline crisis By Rosalyn R. LaPier The Conversation In recent weeks, protests against the building of the Dakota Access Pipeline across North Dakota have escalated. Native American elders, families and children have set up tipis and tents on a campsite near the pipeline’s path in the hope of stopping the pipeline’s construction. Dave Archambault Jr., the leader of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe that is leading the efforts to stop the pipeline, summed up what is at the heart of the issue. In a brief two-minute statement before the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, he said, “Oil companies are causing deliberate destruction of our sacred places.” As a Native American scholar of environmental history and religious studies, I am often asked what Native American leaders mean when they say that certain landscapes are “sacred places” or “sacred sites.” What makes a mountain, hill or prairie a “sacred” place? Meaning of sacred spaces I learned from my grandparents about the sacred areas within Blackfeet tribal territory in Montana and Alberta, which is not far from Lakota tribal territory in the Dakotas. My grandparents said that sacred areas are places set aside from human presence. They identified two overarching types of sacred place: those set aside for the divine, such as a dwelling place, and those set aside for human remembrance, such as a burial or battle site.
