Report: Something biblical for the weekend? - Culture - Times Online http://www.timesonline.co.uk/printFriendly/0,,1-533-2324945-533,... CLICK HERE TO PRINT CLOSE WINDOW The Sunday Times August 27, 2006 Report: Something biblical for the weekend? As Margate prep ares for a plague of frogs and film crews, AA Gill asks: can they be serious? The moment you walk out of the train station, Margate hits you with the Proustian nostalgia of the English seaside. There’s the whiff of ozone, rotting seaweed and chip fat, the ambient static of the waves, predatory herring gulls and the mechanical chatter and pop from dozing amusement arcades. And there’s the bright, bounced, magical light, the North Sea horizon gleaming like polished steel. The light is astonishing — it was this light that turned on Turner. On a bright August day, the beach is deserted. The promenade shops are boarded or closed. The lido has silted up, the funfair is bankrupt and, along the front, occasional wiry men walk frightening dogs and stare at the horizon. On the old sea wall, a young black girl stares down at you from a large banner. She looks passive and guarded. Beside her, another banner shows a Bible open at Exodus; on a third, there’s the back of a head with plaited hair. The images are a surprise, mostly because so plainly, on so many levels, they don’t belong here. The girl is from the Congo; the pictures were taken by the American photographer Wendy Ewald. They are from a series called Towards a Promised Land and are part of a larger project called Exodus.

  • Gioachino Rossini Moïse Et Pharaon Riccardo Muti
_____________________________________________________________ GIOACHINO ROSSINI MOÏSE ET PHARAON RICCARDO MUTI TEATRO ALLA SCALA www.musicom.it MOÏSE ET PHARAON ________________________________________________________________________________ MOÏSE ET PHARAON: LISTENING GUIDE Philip Gossett Until recently Rossini’s four-act French opera, Moïse et Pharaon , which the composer presented to the Parisian public on 26 March 1827, was largely known in a poor Italian translation, entitled either Mosè or Il nuovo Mosè , to differentiate it from the related three-act Italian opera that Rossini had written a decade earlier for the Teatro San Carlo of Naples ( Mosè in Egitto , 5 March 1818). That transformation from Mosè to Moïse et Pharaon offers a fasincating glimpse of the operatic world within which Rossini pursued his artistic goals. 1 The Background: Mosè in Egitto It was to the Théâtre Italien that Gioachino Rossini first turned his attention when he began his official activities in Paris in 1824, mounting productions of his major Italian works, some of which - such as La donna del lago , Zelmira , and Semiramide - were unknown in France. Few doubted, however, that among his goals was to compose operas in French for the primary theater of the capital, the Académie Royale de Musique, commonly known as the Opéra. He prepared his way carefully, becoming comfortable with the French language, courting government favor (his Il viaggio a Reims was written for the coronation of Charles X in 1825), and developing a new generation of French singers proficient with Italian vocal style. Rossini’s earliest efforts at the Opéra reflect a deliberate plan. Instead of beginning immediately with a new opera in French, he adapted two of his finest Italian serious operas, works whose emphasis on theatrical spectacle made them particularly congenial to the traditions of French dramaturgy.

In the course of his life he undergoes many shape-changes: an abandoned child drifting down a river; a leader of a slave revolt; a guide through the wilderness; a miracle-worker; a law-giver; a literary man writing the Pentateuch; a figure of disappointment, gazing from the mountain-top at the land of milk and honey he will never be permitted to enter. It is to be expected, then, that artistic representations of Moses would be vague and contradictory. There is a small tradition of memorable musical Moseses. For example, in Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s oratorio Die Israeliten in der Wüste (1768-69), Moses is little more than a chorister promoted to soloist, the voice of his people praying to God for rescue; the main event is the miracle of the spring that suddenly flows from the rock. Bach set a text by Daniel Schiebeler, perhaps with some assistance from the redoubtable Klopstock, author of Der Messias; and Moses as precursor Messiah was the only Moses here present.

What is a festival? It’s something exceptional, something out of the ordinary …something that must create a special atmosphere which stems not only from the quality of the art and the production, but from the countryside, the ambience of a city and the traditions. .of a region (de Rougement, quoted in Isar 1976: 131) The use of festivals as a way to promote cultural and economic regeneration has been widely used in USA and many European cities, particularly following the second world war (Levin, 1982: 10-18; Whitt, 1987; Hiller, 1990; Ley and Olds, 1988; 1992; Bassett, 1993; Hudson, 1995). International festivals such as Edinburgh in 1947, Dartington in 1948, the Festival of Britain in 1951, were attempts to use culture and the arts to promote optimism and ‘provide a platform for the flowering of the human spirit’ (Henderson, 1991: 26).
