Infallible, In Search of the Real George Eliot INFALLIBLE IN SEARCH OF THE REAL GEORGE ELIOT Introduction Andrea Pozzo’s trompe l’oeil ceiling in the Jesu church in Rome is a fabu- lously transparent visual fiction. It is an optical illusion that has a single effective point of view: its fallibility illustrates the necessity, or at least the benefits, of faithful obedience. Papal Infallibility was decreed at the first Vatican Council as the th century drew to a close and modernism gath- ered speed. As the voice of God on Earth was personified, George Eliot was already in print. Proust wrote his notes on George Eliot in the early years of the th century: as concise in his admiration for her as he was expansive in his Search for Lost Time. Infallible, In Search of the Real George Eliot is a project exploring aspects of fiction in contemporary art. These stories and texts have been written in response to a series of exhibitions and a website. The exhibitions included video, sculpture, painting, drawing, photography and text. The illustrations in this book are not necessarily of works that were in the exhibitions, but are by the same artists. British Library Courses www.bl.uk/courses Comedy Writing for TV & Radio Masterclass Dates Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 October 2019 Times 10.30–17.00 Location Harry M Weinrebe Learning Centre Level No previous experience required Class size Maximum 16 participants Course description Do you have a TV or radio comedy idea? Do you want to discover more about how writing comedy for these mediums works? This two-day course is inspired by the British Library’s acquisition of the Michael Palin archive, which features handwritten original Monty Python scripts, and draws on the historic P.G. Wodehouse archive, which will be shown to us by a British Library curator. Using these collections as a starting point, you’ll explore comedy scene writing and plotting, and character development with expert guidance from tutor, Chris Head and special guest, Lucy Lumsden. Lucy will also give us insight into the comedy industry and how to pitch your ideas. This course offers a unique opportunity to develop your own comedy ideas in a creative, focused and supportive environment. Saturday Our first day begins with a show-and-tell with a curator exploring selected modern comedy artefacts acquired by the library. We will then watch and analyse Monty Python sketches, TV & radio adaptations of Jeeves and Wooster and a range of comedy clips as nominated by the group to explore creating characters, situations, plotting, dialogue and scene writing. Previous clips have included scenes from The Office, Fleabag, The IT Crowd, Toast of London, Only Fools and Horses, and more. This exploration will uncover techniques and approaches to: creating effective characters with idiosyncrasies and inner-conflict; building situations that are rich with dysfunctional relationships and provide opportunities for comedy; developing plots that challenge your characters and tell an effective story; writing scenes that are well structured and progress the plot; and producing dialogue that is dynamic and entertaining.

This at times hilarious yet poignant drama is about an ostensibly successful career woman who is haunted by the demons of her past. The doyenne of housewives during the Sixties and Seventies, Fanny’s diet-defying dishes, withering put-downs and pancake make-up made her the scourge of traditional British cooking. [Type text] 'JOSH' IS BACK FOR A THIRD SERIES ON BBC THREE THIS AUTUMN Coming to BBC Three, October 2017 6 x 25 min Episodes After a successful second series in 2016, hugely popular stand-up Josh Widdicombe returns for a third series of Josh. Written by Josh Widdicombe and Tom Craine, directed by David Schneider (I'm Alan Partridge and The Death Of Stalin) and produced by Simon Mayhew-Archer from BBC Studios (This Country), the 6 x 25 minute series will debut on BBC Three this October (date to be confirmed). For Josh, the phrase “nice guys finish last” doesn’t quite cover it. He’s the kind of guy who doesn’t realise the race has started, hits every hurdle on the way and then gets strangled by the finishing tape. This series follows his successes (not many) and his failures (many) as he tries to navigate the race of life. Whether it’s being dumped whilst dangling on a zip-line, tolerating an egomaniacal fellow comedian on tour or being blackmailed by a septuagenarian next-door neighbour, Josh always tries to do the right thing…and always comes off the loser. Trundling alongside Josh are his loyal flat-mates, Owen (Elis James) and Kate (Beattie Edmondson), closely followed by their remorselessly attentive landlord, Geoff (Jack Dee), a man so unaccustomed to normal social behaviour that he thinks nothing of moving a fully-grown swan into his house. Meanwhile, Owen, a man usually as relaxed as a sloth in a bubble bath, can’t help but “do a Josh” and self-sabotage a burgeoning relationship with X Factor star, Diana Vickers.

  • The Official History of Britain and the Channel Tunnel
THE OFFICIAL HISTORY OF BRITAIN AND THE CHANNEL TUNNEL This authoritative volume presents the first official history of the British Government’s evolving relationship with the Channel Tunnel project from the early nineteenth century to 2005. The building of the Channel Tunnel has been one of Europe’s major projects and a testimony to British-French and public-private sector collaboration. However, Eurotunnel’s current financial crisis provides a sobering backcloth for an examination of the British Government’s long-term flirtation with the project, and in particular, the earlier Tunnel project in the 1960s and early 1970s, which was abandoned in 1975. Commissioned by the Cabinet Office and using hitherto untapped British Government records, this book presents an in-depth analysis of the successful project of 1986–94. It provides a vivid portrayal of the complexities of quadripartite decision-making (in two countries, with both public and private sectors), revealing new insights into the role of the British and French Governments in the process. Written by Terry Gourvish, Britain’s leading transport historian, this book will be essential reading for general readers and specialists with an interest in business history, international relations, public policy and project management. WHITEHALL HISTORIES: GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL HISTORY SERIES ISSN: 1474–8398 The Government Official History series began in 1919 with wartime histories, and the peacetime series was inaugurated in 1966 by Harold Wilson. The aim of the series is to produce major histories in their own right, compiled by historians eminent in the field, who are afforded free access to all relevant material in the official archives.
