Landmarks Preservation Commission March 6, 2001, Designation List 325 LP-2029 1 WALL STREET BUILDING (originally Irving Trust Company Building, now The Bank of New York Building), 1 Wall Street (aka 1-7 Wall Street, 70-80 Broadway, and 1-11 New Street), Manhattan. Built 1929-31; architect Ralph Walker of Voorhees, Gmelin & Walker. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 23, Lot 7 in part, consisting of the land bounded by the dimensions of the original(1929-31) building lot, starting at the northwest comer running easterly for approximately 102 feet, 5 inches along Wall Street, southerly for approximately 179 feet, 11 inches along New Street, westerly through the lot approximately 107 feet to Broadway, and northerly for approximately 178 feet, 6 inches along Broadway. On December 15, 1998, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the 1 Wall Street Building and the proposed designation of its related Landmark Site (Item No. 2). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. The five speakers in favor of designation included Thaddeus S. Logan III, a vice president of The Bank of New York, representatives of the New York Landmarks Conservancy, the Municipal Art Society, and the Historic Districts Council, as well as architectural historian Andrew Dolkart. There were no speakers in opposition. The Commission has received one letter in support of designation. Summary Constructed in 1929-31 as the corporate headquarters of the Irving Trust Company, this 50-story, limestone faced skyscraper is situated on what was considered the "most expensive real estate in New York," the intersection of Wall Street and Broadway. -

RAYMOND HOOD and the American Skyscraper 1 RAYMOND HOOD and the American Skyscraper Curated by JO-ANN CONKLIN, JONATHAN DUVAL, and DIETRICH NEUMANN DAVID WINTON BELL GALLERY, BROWN UNIVERSITY 2 From Pawtucket to Paris: Raymond Hood’s Education and Early Work JONATHAN DUVAL On December 3, 1922, a headline on the front page of the Chicago Tribune announced the winner of the newspaper’s sensational international competition: “Howells Wins in Contest for Tribune Tower: Novelist’s Son Gains Architect Prize.” The credit due to Raymond Hood, the son of a box maker from Pawtucket, Rhode Island, was relegated to a passing mention. Attention was given instead to the slightly older and much better known John Mead Howells, son of the famous novelist and Atlantic Monthly editor William Dean Howells. Though Howells was then the more notable of the pair, Hood was quick to gain recognition in his own right and soon achieved worldwide fame. Scholars and critics agree that the Tribune Tower competition was the turning point that launched Hood’s career.1 As a consequence, though, his work before 1922 has not been adequately surveyed or scrutinized. On the surface, a description of Hood’s career before the Tribune Tower competition might seem like an inventory of mediocrity—styling radiator covers, designing a pool house shaped like a boat, writing letters to editors arguing against prohibition—ending only with the “famed turn of fortune.” 2 However, it is in these earlier years of study and work that the characteristics we associate with Raymond Hood’s architecture were formed and solidified: a blend of tradition and innovation, a focus on plan, a facility with style and ornament, an understanding of architectural illumination, and a thoughtful, iterative approach to design. -

On April 19, 1988, the landmarks Preservation Conunission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a landmark of the Master Building and the proposed designation of the related landmark site (Item No. 11). '!he hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eleven witnesses spoke in favor of designation, and one expressed uncertainty. '!he owners and tenants, at the time of the public hearing, were unsure about their position on designation due to the impending conversion of the property to a ccx:>peratively--avvned building. '!he ccx:>p board has since that time communicated to the Conunission a position in favor of designation. DESCRIPI'ION AND ANALYSIS 'Ihe Master Building, erected in 1928-29 to house an apartment hotel and musellltl, is an innovative and significant example of the work of Harvey Wiley Corbett, an architect influential in skyscraper design, and expresses his successful employment of sculptural massing, vertical emphasis, and the minbn.3.1, yet elegant, use of surface ornamentation and historically-inspired detailing. '!he design of the building includes many strong and well- integrated features representative of the best of New York City's Art Deco style skyscrapers, including patterned brickwork which varies in color from dark at the base to light at the tower, setbacks, irregular and faceted massing of the upper stories, and an ornamental cap. -

On January I I, 1977, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the p~oposed designation as a Landmark of the Pratt-New York Phoenix School of Design and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No.2). At the request of the School, the hearing was continued to March 8, 1977 _(1tem No.2). Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisioos of law. One witness spoke in favor of designa tion. There were no speakers in opposition to designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The Pratt-New York Phoenix School of Design, a five-story brick and stone neo-classical institutional building, is located on the northwest corner of Lexington Avenue and 30th Street. Built in 1908-09, it was designed by New York City architect Harvey Wiley Corbett of the firm of Pel I & Corbett. The school was founded as the New York Schoo~ of Applied Design for Women on May 31, 1892, and was first housed in rented quarters at 200 West 23rd Street. Its stated purpose was that " ••• of affording to women instruc tion which may enable them to earn a livelihood by the employment of their taste and manual dexterity in the application of ornamental design to manufacture and the arts." The school tutti I led this mission, and generations of students received instruction in areas such as book illustration, textile and wallpaper design, interior decoration, and other related fields.
