Rip van Lips was fourth in a decent Listed race at Chantilly over 3000 metres under top French jockey Gerard Mosse, who travelled over to take the ride on Sunday. Despite being drawn widest of the thirteen runners, Mosse used all his experience to move Rip van Lips over into the perfect position just behind early leader Vivienne Wells. However, as Vivienne Wells weakened, Rip van Lips, who initially faced a stern challenge at the top of the straight from Pessemona under Andre Best, soon eased clear of his rivals, eventually crossing the line 2½ lengths clear of the locally-trained Memphis, with French raider Brokeback Mountain back in third. Winning jockey Mosse was full of praise for Rip van Lips ‘It was a true run race, they went a really strong gallop. My horse is a proper stayer though, he gave me a really good feel, he never gave up and kept on going right to the line’ said the French rider. Rip van Lips, a five year old entire who missed the whole of 2019 after suffering a broken bone in his leg only to bounce back when winning (placed first after the winner was disqualified) at Munich in June 2020 after a 20 month absence, is by Group 1 winner miler Rip van Winkle out of the high class German-trained mare Red Lips. Although only winning at Listed and sales race level, the Andreas Löwe-trained Red Lips competed well on the Group 1 stage throughout Europe in 2013, placing fourth in both the Prix de l’Opera at Longchamp and German Oaks, before finishing third in the Premio Lydia Tesio in Rome. Although Sunday’s race victory automatically qualified Rip van Lips for next month’s Belmont Gold Cup in New York as well as the Irish St. Leger in September, is it understood that connections are set to favour a trip to Royal Ascot for the Ascot Gold Cup on Thursday June 17th. News Round-Up - Germany DORTMUND: LONDON TAKES LIBERTIES IN GRAND PRIX TRIAL The Waldemar Hickst-trained LIBERTY LONDON was an impressive all the way winner of the Dortmund Grand Prix trial on Thursday. As the name suggest, Thursday’s race, which carried Listed status, was a trial for next month’s Dortmund Grand Prix, a Group 3 contest perhaps better known by its other name as the Grosser Preis der Wirtschaft, which will also be run like Thursday’s race over the rather unusual distance of 1750 metres. Under Eduardo Pedroza, the five-year-old mare, who was sent off a 10.4-1 shot on the local Tote, led from start to finish, and came home relatively unchallenged for a 3½ length victory from the ten year old Potemkin under jockey Bauyrzhan Murzabayev who along with Jozef Bojko, each won three of the supporting contests on the eight race card. The five year old mare Red Hot, trained in France by Irish-born Gavin Hernon, was a short head behind Potemkin back in third. However, the success of Liberty London, whose last victory was over 2400 metres at Clairefontaine in July last year, appeared to come as a surprise to trainer Waldemar Hickst. ’I didn’t think that she could win over this short distance, but the owner wanted to go for this race, the jockey gave her an excellent ride, and everything went well’, said the trainer, who was born in present-day Kazakhstan, but has been based in Cologne for several years. Indeed, Liberty London currently doesn’t hold an entry in the Dortmund Grand Prix itself. News Round-Up - Europe HUNGARY: ENGLISH IMPORT SPRINGS SHOCK IN 1000 GUINEAS The British-bred ENVIOUS, unraced for Newmarket trainer Ed Vaughan and purchased for just 800 Guineas at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale 2020 in October last year by his current owners, was a shock 45.9-1 winner of the Hazafi Dij (Hungarian 1000 Guineas) at the Kincsem Park course in Budapest on Sunday. Despite being placed in all three of her starts for Hungarian trainer Szandra Berghoffer to date, Envious was taking a big step up in class here, and also having run exclusively on sand, was also having her first outing on grass.
