Issue 157 – 14 May 2021 Content Imprint Issue 157 – 14th May 2021 Hello, and welcome to the second Anglo German Racing Newsletter of 2021! This week, we review one of Germany’s top staying races of the year at Berlin- Hoppegarten , and an exciting finish to a Listed race at Dortmund. Further afield, we look back at no less than six versions of Guineas classic races, as well as a big raceday in Hungary and a Group 1 chase in Italy. Looking ahead, we preview the Czech 2000 Guineas and the first jump races of the year in Sweden. For all the very latest information, please follow our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/anglogermanracing or check out our website at www.anglogermanracing.com which has now been updated. Rip van Lips was fourth in a decent Listed race at Chantilly over 3000 metres under top French jockey Gerard Mosse, who travelled over to take the ride on Sunday. Despite being drawn widest of the thirteen runners, Mosse used all his experience to move Rip van Lips over into the perfect position just behind early leader Vivienne Wells. However, as Vivienne Wells weakened, Rip van Lips, who initially faced a stern challenge at the top of the straight from Pessemona under Andre Best, soon eased clear of his rivals, eventually crossing the line 2½ lengths clear of the locally-trained Memphis, with French raider Brokeback Mountain back in third. Winning jockey Mosse was full of praise for Rip van Lips ‘It was a true run race, they went a really strong gallop. My horse is a proper stayer though, he gave me a really good feel, he never gave up and kept on going right to the line’ said the French rider. Rip van Lips, a five year old entire who missed the whole of 2019 after suffering a broken bone in his leg only to bounce back when winning (placed first after the winner was disqualified) at Munich in June 2020 after a 20 month absence, is by Group 1 winner miler Rip van Winkle out of the high class German-trained mare Red Lips. Although only winning at Listed and sales race level, the Andreas Löwe-trained Red Lips competed well on the Group 1 stage throughout Europe in 2013, placing fourth in both the Prix de l’Opera at Longchamp and German Oaks, before finishing third in the Premio Lydia Tesio in Rome. Although Sunday’s race victory automatically qualified Rip van Lips for next month’s Belmont Gold Cup in New York as well as the Irish St. Leger in September, is it understood that connections are set to favour a trip to Royal Ascot for the Ascot Gold Cup on Thursday June 17th. News Round-Up - Germany DORTMUND: LONDON TAKES LIBERTIES IN GRAND PRIX TRIAL The Waldemar Hickst-trained LIBERTY LONDON was an impressive all the way winner of the Dortmund Grand Prix trial on Thursday. As the name suggest, Thursday’s race, which carried Listed status, was a trial for next month’s Dortmund Grand Prix, a Group 3 contest perhaps better known by its other name as the Grosser Preis der Wirtschaft, which will also be run like Thursday’s race over the rather unusual distance of 1750 metres. Under Eduardo Pedroza, the five-year-old mare, who was sent off a 10.4-1 shot on the local Tote, led from start to finish, and came home relatively unchallenged for a 3½ length victory from the ten year old Potemkin under jockey Bauyrzhan Murzabayev who along with Jozef Bojko, each won three of the supporting contests on the eight race card. The five year old mare Red Hot, trained in France by Irish-born Gavin Hernon, was a short head behind Potemkin back in third. However, the success of Liberty London, whose last victory was over 2400 metres at Clairefontaine in July last year, appeared to come as a surprise to trainer Waldemar Hickst. ’I didn’t think that she could win over this short distance, but the owner wanted to go for this race, the jockey gave her an excellent ride, and everything went well’, said the trainer, who was born in present-day Kazakhstan, but has been based in Cologne for several years. Indeed, Liberty London currently doesn’t hold an entry in the Dortmund Grand Prix itself. We invite you to take this opportunity to immerse yourself in the energy and originality of Hungarian culture through the evocative images offered by the selection of five films. All movies are in Hungarian with English subtitles. We are very grateful to the Hungarian National Film Fund and The Roxy Cinema for their very helpful co-operation in organizing the First Hungarian Film Festival in Wellington. dr. Laszlo Zsolt Szabo Ambassador With tragedy, excitement, sex and violence en route to the finals, a stirring tribute to a doomed generation (Hungarian: Szabadság, szerelem), a 2006 film commemorates Hungary’s Revolution of 1956 and the “Blood in the Water” match, directed by Krisztina Goda. Taking place in Budapest and at the Melbourne Olympic Games in October and November of that year, the film takes viewers into the passion and sadness of one of the most dramatic popular revolts of the twentieth centu- ry. In the same year Soviet tanks were violently suppressing the Revolution within Hungary, the Hungarian water polo team was winning over Russia in the Olympic pool in Melbourne, in what is sometimes described as the bloodiest water polo match in history. While telling the story of 1956 in part through fictional lead characters, the film-makers simultaneously recreated many of the key public events of the Revolution, including the huge demonstrations and the fighting in the streets of Budapest.

TUESDAY, 30 JULY 2019 STRADIVARIUS NEXT UP PEDIGREE INSIGHTS: EUROPEAN 2-YEAR- OLD SCENE HOTTING UP by Andrew Caulfield FOR FRANKIE As John Berry rightly pointed out in his Weekly Wrap yesterday, it was great to see a magnificent edition of the King George dominated by four horses which were in their fourth season of racing. While the sport certainly benefits if its biggest stars stay around long enough to become household names, I also draw considerable pleasure from the emergence of potential new stars among the 2-year-olds. Last week saw five two-year-old group races contested in Ireland (2), France (2) and Britain (1) and all five had something to tell us. The Irish races simply underlined Galileo's potential for siring top performers from daughters of Danehill Dancer and Pivotal. With the G3 Tyros S. falling to the highly progressive Armory, Galileo's statistics with Danehill Dancer mares now stand at 20 black-type winners from 107 foals of racing age.
