Stradivarius Next up for Frankie TUESDAY, 30 JULY 2019 STRADIVARIUS NEXT UP PEDIGREE INSIGHTS: EUROPEAN 2-YEAR- OLD SCENE HOTTING UP by Andrew Caulfield FOR FRANKIE As John Berry rightly pointed out in his Weekly Wrap yesterday, it was great to see a magnificent edition of the King George dominated by four horses which were in their fourth season of racing. While the sport certainly benefits if its biggest stars stay around long enough to become household names, I also draw considerable pleasure from the emergence of potential new stars among the 2-year-olds. Last week saw five two-year-old group races contested in Ireland (2), France (2) and Britain (1) and all five had something to tell us. The Irish races simply underlined Galileo's potential for siring top performers from daughters of Danehill Dancer and Pivotal. With the G3 Tyros S. falling to the highly progressive Armory, Galileo's statistics with Danehill Dancer mares now stand at 20 black-type winners from 107 foals of racing age. Cont. p6 Stradivarius | Racing Post IN TDN AMERICA TODAY Frankie Dettori=s golden summer stretches on without a hint of STONESTREET FARM LAUNCHES YEARLING WARRANTY relenting and after basking in the glory of major victories at Stonestreet Farm, alongside the UK’s Gluck Equine Research Epsom, Royal Ascot, Saint-Cloud, Sandown, Deauville, The Center, has announced the devlopment of a blood sampling, testing and secure storage protocol. Seven of his nine group wins over the past two months have come for John Gosden and one of the most prized of them all came on Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in the June 20 G1 Gold Cup at the Royal meeting. Were Bjorn Nielsen=s incredible chestnut to add to his rider=s sequence in the G1 Qatar Goodwood Cup and increase his own tally to eight consecutive triumphs, it will be the stuff of which dreams are made for connections. Already a dual winner of this, he will have most of the hearts of the nation willing him on in what could be his toughest test to date. AEverything has been good and I=ve been happy with him,@ Gosden said. AThey went harder in the Ascot Gold Cup last year, so he had to race harder. This year=s was quite steady and then they quickened. We gave him a nice, easy fortnight after that. The old boy seems to be back in the zone, so we are looking forward to the race. I think the drop back to two miles will help the others as he gets two and a half miles well. As long as he gets there in good order, I will leave it up to the jockey and him.@ Cont. p2 TDN EUROPE • PAGE 2 OF 11 • THETDN.COM TUESDAY • 30 JULY 2019 Qatar Goodwood Festival Day 1 Preview Cont. from p1 Stradivarius is bidding to join Double Trigger (Ire) (Ela-Mana-Mou {Ire}) in bringing up a treble in this prestigious staying affair. As that former Mark Johnston luminary succeeded in 1995, 1997 and 1998 Stradivarius will be the first in its long history to win three on the bounce so after the pressure of Enable on Saturday it is straight back into the cauldron for the trainer-jockey combination. AI think any of these great staying horses are very important to the whole tapestry of the racing programme in Europe, let alone here in England,@ Gosden added. AAny great Cup horse, whether it is an Ardross or a Sagaro, they very much capture the imagination and Double Trigger was no exception. It would be exciting if he could win it three times like him.@ Cross Counter | Horsephotos Back in opposition are the Gold Cup second and fourth Dee Ex Bee (GB) (Farhh {GB}) and Cross Counter (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), who filled the first two positions in last year=s G3 Gordon S. On that occasion, Godolphin=s eventual G1 Melbourne Cup hero put 4 1/2 lengths between them and broke the track record as a result so he is obviously at home on what is one of the country=s trickier venues. AHe is a horse that handles the track, as he is the track record holder over a mile and a half,@ trainer Charlie Appleby confirmed. AHe has come out of Ascot in good shape and dropping back to two miles is a positive. They didn=t go an overly-strong gallop at Ascot and we purposely dropped him out to get the trip and the way the race worked out, you probably wanted to be further forward. I=m not going to be bold and say we will turn things around, but I feel this race will play more to the strengths of our horse.@ Cont. p3 TDN EUROPE • PAGE 3 OF 11 • THETDN.COM TUESDAY • 30 JULY 2019 Qatar Goodwood Festival Day 1 Preview Cont. • Top Jockey, Trainers and Owner Awards up for Grabs at Royal Ascot
TOP JOCKEY, TRAINER AND OWNER AWARDS UP FOR GRABS AT ROYAL ASCOT 15th June 2020 Awards for leading jockey, trainer and owner will once again be distributed at this year’s Royal Ascot. Frankie Dettori claimed the QIPCO Leading Jockey Award at the Royal Meeting in 2019 with seven victories, thanks largely to a superb four-timer on day three. The 49-year-old looks set to have another excellent book of rides this year as he aims for a seventh title at the meeting. With Jamie Spencer sidelined through injury, Ryan Moore is the only other jockey riding this week to be previously crowned top jockey at Royal Ascot, having claimed the most recent of eight meeting titles in 2018. Due to the protective measures in place this week, there will be no transferable armband for the leading jockey throughout the meeting. Aidan O’Brien received the QIPCO Royal Ascot Leading Trainer Award for a 10th time in 2019 and looks to have his string in top form once again. Other previous winners who will be hoping to have a good week include Sir Michael Stoute, John Gosden, Mark Johnston and Saeed bin Suroor. Paul Cole, who was leading trainer at Royal Ascot in 1994, will aim to create history by becoming the first British-based trainer with a joint-licence to win at the meeting, having gone into partnership with his son Oliver at the start of the season. Simon and Ed Crisford, another father and son combination, will also be looking to saddle the ground-breaking first.

  • History of the Ormonde
WELCOME TO THE ORMONDE GUESTHOUSE THE ORMONDE GUESTHOUSE HISTORY Former Railway Tavern public house, later renamed as the Ormonde tavern. Late 19th, early 20th century. Two storey, 3 bay semi symmetrical arrangement with projecting terminal end bays, timber framed gables to projecting bays. Slate roof, 1st floor timber framed. Ground floor Ruabon brick with stone dressings to window heads, cheeks and cills, casement windows with leaded transome lights. This building is now the Ormonde Hotel. "Ormonde" (1883–1904) was an English Thoroughbred racehorse, an unbeaten Triple Crown winner, generally considered to be one of the greatest racehorses ever. He also won the Champion Stakes and the Hardwicke Stakes twice. At the time he was often labeled as the 'horse of the century'. Ormonde was trained at Kingsclere by John Porter for the 1st Duke of Westminster. His regular jockeys were Fred Archer (who features on the sign outside the hotel in the correct colours) and Tom Cannon. After retiring from racing he suffered fertility problems, but still sired Orme, who won the Eclipse Stakes twice. It has been suggested that "Ormonde's" sire was the model for "Silver Blaze" in the Sherlock Holmes story of the same name, first published 1892. In the same way, "Colonel Ross" in the story is said to be based on one of the Grosvenors - the first Duke of Westminster. Eaton Stud bred "Ormonde" with Fred Archer up. Fred Archer (1857-86) had 21 Classic winners and was Champion Jockey 13 of his 17 years, before tragically committing suicide in 1886. To keep his weight down for racing he used "Archer's mixture", a powerful laxitive made up by Dr J.

The Embassy of Hungary in Wellington warmly invite you to the first Hungarian Film Festival in Wellington, which is dedicated to presenting a range of high quality, unique, cutting edge, exciting and little-seen work in New Zealand. The programme, that combines the best in contemporary Hungarian cinema with masterpieces from Hungary’s rich cinematic tradition, provides meaningful insights into society. We invite you to take this opportunity to immerse yourself in the energy and originality of Hungarian culture through the evocative images offered by the selection of five films. All movies are in Hungarian with English subtitles. We are very grateful to the Hungarian National Film Fund and The Roxy Cinema for their very helpful co-operation in organizing the First Hungarian Film Festival in Wellington. dr. Laszlo Zsolt Szabo Ambassador With tragedy, excitement, sex and violence en route to the finals, a stirring tribute to a doomed generation (Hungarian: Szabadság, szerelem), a 2006 film commemorates Hungary’s Revolution of 1956 and the “Blood in the Water” match, directed by Krisztina Goda. Taking place in Budapest and at the Melbourne Olympic Games in October and November of that year, the film takes viewers into the passion and sadness of one of the most dramatic popular revolts of the twentieth centu- ry. In the same year Soviet tanks were violently suppressing the Revolution within Hungary, the Hungarian water polo team was winning over Russia in the Olympic pool in Melbourne, in what is sometimes described as the bloodiest water polo match in history. While telling the story of 1956 in part through fictional lead characters, the film-makers simultaneously recreated many of the key public events of the Revolution, including the huge demonstrations and the fighting in the streets of Budapest.
