LEGER VICTORY Just two weeks after Ghaiyyath romped to an incredible 14 length victory in the Grosser Preis von Baden, the Godolphin operation headed by Sheikh Mohammed look to land another German prize when ISPOLINI, trained like Ghaiyyath by Charlie Appleby, contests the Group 3 German St. Leger at Dortmund on Sunday. Runner up in the Group 2 Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan back in March to Melbourne Cup winner Cross Counter, Ispolini has raced only once in England this year, finishing fourth in the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup back in May. However, the fact that Ispolini was only around six lengths behind Stradivarius, widely regarded as the world’s best flat stayer having won his last ten races, coupled with his fine Dubai form points to Ispolini, who will be ridden on Sunday by James Doyle, as clearly the one to beat here. The only other overseas runner in the race also runs in the famous Godolphin blue. However, MAGICAL TOUCH makes the journey over from the stables of French trainer Henri-Alex Pantall, and arrives here on the back of an impressive victory in the Listed race at Berlin last month, beating 2018 German St. Leger runner up ERNESTO (third), NACIDA (fourth), and SWEET MAN (eighth), and all three of those rival re- oppose on Sunday. MOONSHINER was third behind Ernesto in this race last year, and was also second in the 2017 renewal behind ORIENTAL EAGLE, who runs again here. Having had a rather torrid 2018 having finished last in four of his five races, Oriental Eagle has been far better this year, finishing a fine third in a Group 3 race at Düsseldorf last time out over 2400 metres. Back up in distance here, Oriental Eagle, who will be ridden on Sunday as he was to his 2017 victory by English jockey Jack Mitchell, could go well here at a big price. Despite having been off the racecourse for 16 months, Talent showed no ill effects of his lengthy absence, running on in fine style under jockey Marcel Novak to take the 5800 metre event by 6 lengths, with the Josef Vana-trained pair of Theophilos and Mazhilis in second and third place respectively. The odds on favourite Tzigane du Berlais, winner of last year’s Velka Pardubicka, was off the bridle from an early stage, with jockey Jan Faltejsek having to niggle the eight year old along on several occasions. The pair eventually finished fifth, some 16 lengths behind the winner. News Round-Up - Europe SWITZERLAND: ENGLISH-BORN TRAINER LANDS TOP JUMPS RACE LOUISA CARBERRY became the first English-born trainer to win Switzerland’s biggest jumps race, the Grosser Preis der Schweiz, when DOURDOUR won the 72nd running of the steeplechase at Aarau on Sunday. The wife of former Irish jockey Philip Carberry, Louisa Carberry is based in Sennones in France, where she has trained since 2014. Dourdour, an eight year old gelding owned by his breeder Luc Monnet, was registering his first victory in six attempts last year, having last been in the winners enclosure after winning a steeplechase at Durtal in November. Having taking up the running with a circuit to go under jockey Romain Juillot in Sunday’s race, Dourdour survived a blunder at the third last fence to land the 50,000 CHF (approx 45.920 EUR) contest comfortably from the grey Baraka de Thaix, with Elixir de Chaluzy back in third. News Round-Up - Europe CZECH RAIDER LANDS POLISH CHASE The Czech-trained REKI prevailed in an exciting finish to this year’s Wielka Wroclawska Nagroda Portu Lotniczego Wrocław, widely regarded as the biggest jumps race in Poland, which took place at the Partynice course at Wroclaw on Sunday. Formerly a very useful chaser having won the Crystal Cup race at Wroclaw in 2017, Reki returned to winning ways in the 175,000 PLN (approx 40,330 EUR) contest when, under a determined ride from jockey Pavel Slozil jr, the seven year old just got up in a photo to deny fellow Czech raider Larizano, with Nick the best of the home-trained runners in third. The victory completed a European big race double for trainer Hana Kabelkova, who landed the last of four qualifying races for this year’s renewal of the world famous Velka Pardubicka at Pardubice on Saturday with the eight year old gelding Talent.
