LEGER VICTORY Just two weeks after Ghaiyyath romped to an incredible 14 length victory in the Grosser Preis von Baden, the Godolphin operation headed by Sheikh Mohammed look to land another German prize when ISPOLINI, trained like Ghaiyyath by Charlie Appleby, contests the Group 3 German St. Leger at Dortmund on Sunday. Runner up in the Group 2 Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan back in March to Melbourne Cup winner Cross Counter, Ispolini has raced only once in England this year, finishing fourth in the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup back in May. However, the fact that Ispolini was only around six lengths behind Stradivarius, widely regarded as the world’s best flat stayer having won his last ten races, coupled with his fine Dubai form points to Ispolini, who will be ridden on Sunday by James Doyle, as clearly the one to beat here. The only other overseas runner in the race also runs in the famous Godolphin blue. However, MAGICAL TOUCH makes the journey over from the stables of French trainer Henri-Alex Pantall, and arrives here on the back of an impressive victory in the Listed race at Berlin last month, beating 2018 German St. Leger runner up ERNESTO (third), NACIDA (fourth), and SWEET MAN (eighth), and all three of those rival re- oppose on Sunday. MOONSHINER was third behind Ernesto in this race last year, and was also second in the 2017 renewal behind ORIENTAL EAGLE, who runs again here. Having had a rather torrid 2018 having finished last in four of his five races, Oriental Eagle has been far better this year, finishing a fine third in a Group 3 race at Düsseldorf last time out over 2400 metres. Back up in distance here, Oriental Eagle, who will be ridden on Sunday as he was to his 2017 victory by English jockey Jack Mitchell, could go well here at a big price. Despite having been off the racecourse for 16 months, Talent showed no ill effects of his lengthy absence, running on in fine style under jockey Marcel Novak to take the 5800 metre event by 6 lengths, with the Josef Vana-trained pair of Theophilos and Mazhilis in second and third place respectively. The odds on favourite Tzigane du Berlais, winner of last year’s Velka Pardubicka, was off the bridle from an early stage, with jockey Jan Faltejsek having to niggle the eight year old along on several occasions. The pair eventually finished fifth, some 16 lengths behind the winner. News Round-Up - Europe SWITZERLAND: ENGLISH-BORN TRAINER LANDS TOP JUMPS RACE LOUISA CARBERRY became the first English-born trainer to win Switzerland’s biggest jumps race, the Grosser Preis der Schweiz, when DOURDOUR won the 72nd running of the steeplechase at Aarau on Sunday. The wife of former Irish jockey Philip Carberry, Louisa Carberry is based in Sennones in France, where she has trained since 2014. Dourdour, an eight year old gelding owned by his breeder Luc Monnet, was registering his first victory in six attempts last year, having last been in the winners enclosure after winning a steeplechase at Durtal in November. Having taking up the running with a circuit to go under jockey Romain Juillot in Sunday’s race, Dourdour survived a blunder at the third last fence to land the 50,000 CHF (approx 45.920 EUR) contest comfortably from the grey Baraka de Thaix, with Elixir de Chaluzy back in third. Formerly a very useful chaser having won the Crystal Cup race at Wroclaw in 2017, Reki returned to winning ways in the 175,000 PLN (approx 40,330 EUR) contest when, under a determined ride from jockey Pavel Slozil jr, the seven year old just got up in a photo to deny fellow Czech raider Larizano, with Nick the best of the home-trained runners in third. All movies are in Hungarian with English subtitles. We are very grateful to the Hungarian National Film Fund and The Roxy Cinema for their very helpful co-operation in organizing the First Hungarian Film Festival in Wellington. dr. Laszlo Zsolt Szabo Ambassador With tragedy, excitement, sex and violence en route to the finals, a stirring tribute to a doomed generation (Hungarian: Szabadság, szerelem), a 2006 film commemorates Hungary’s Revolution of 1956 and the “Blood in the Water” match, directed by Krisztina Goda. Taking place in Budapest and at the Melbourne Olympic Games in October and November of that year, the film takes viewers into the passion and sadness of one of the most dramatic popular revolts of the twentieth centu- ry. In the same year Soviet tanks were violently suppressing the Revolution within Hungary, the Hungarian water polo team was winning over Russia in the Olympic pool in Melbourne, in what is sometimes described as the bloodiest water polo match in history. While telling the story of 1956 in part through fictional lead characters, the film-makers simultaneously recreated many of the key public events of the Revolution, including the huge demonstrations and the fighting in the streets of Budapest.

TUESDAY, 30 JULY 2019 STRADIVARIUS NEXT UP PEDIGREE INSIGHTS: EUROPEAN 2-YEAR- OLD SCENE HOTTING UP by Andrew Caulfield FOR FRANKIE As John Berry rightly pointed out in his Weekly Wrap yesterday, it was great to see a magnificent edition of the King George dominated by four horses which were in their fourth season of racing. While the sport certainly benefits if its biggest stars stay around long enough to become household names, I also draw considerable pleasure from the emergence of potential new stars among the 2-year-olds. Last week saw five two-year-old group races contested in Ireland (2), France (2) and Britain (1) and all five had something to tell us. The Irish races simply underlined Galileo's potential for siring top performers from daughters of Danehill Dancer and Pivotal. With the G3 Tyros S. falling to the highly progressive Armory, Galileo's statistics with Danehill Dancer mares now stand at 20 black-type winners from 107 foals of racing age. TUESDAY, 18 MAY 2021 THE WEEKLY WRAP: COMING OF AGE JOE MERCER DIES AT 86 By Emma Berry In February, the inevitable announcement came that Pivotal (GB) was to be pensioned at Cheveley Park Stud at the age of 28. David and Patricia Thompson's homebred son of Polar Falcon has been one of the great British breeding stories of the last few decades and the sturdy chestnut has been a great friend to small and major breeders alike through his magnificent stud innings. As he continues his retirement, so does his legacy gain momentum. A few months before Pivotal was retired, his son Siyouni (Fr) had been crowned champion sire in his native France for the first time.
