Oscar Wilde. 7 Introduction Cette thèse ne nait avec aucune présomption : elle n’a que des espoirs. Et ces espoirs, de nature multiple et différente, reposent sur deux objectifs principaux. Tout d’abord, présenter deux ouvrages méconnus mais très intéressants qui n’ont jamais été traduits en langue occidentale : le Yaohua zhuan de Ding Bingren et le Huliyuan Quanzhuan de Zuiyue Shanren. Ensuite, parvenir à voir dans l’esprit-renard quelque chose d’autre qu’un simple démon lubrique et définir sa transgression pas seulement en tant que sexuelle mais aussi en tant que sociopolitique dans le contexte du roman vernaculaire. Mais qu’est-ce qu’un esprit-renard ? Pourquoi le choisir comme sujet d’une thèse ? Ce qu’on appelle esprit-renard, huli jing 狐狸 精 en chinois, est un personnage majeur dans l’histoire de la religion, du folklore et de la littérature pas uniquement chinoise mais aussi coréenne et japonaise. C’est un renard magique, doté de multiples pouvoirs et notamment du pouvoir de métamorphose en être humain1. Mâle ou femelle, jeune et téméraire ou vieux et sage, il se situe toujours entre l’animal et l’humain, le divin et le démoniaque. Il peut hanter des espaces, notamment isolés ou en ruine, et il a un lien très étroit avec la mort et le monde yin (notamment les cimetières). Il hante les humains de deux manières : soit il contrôle leur esprit en faisant égarer leur identité, soit il a des rapports sexuels illicites avec eux. Rappelons en plus que, se nourrissant de qi, l’esprit-renard peut aussi s’amuser à provoquer la rage des hommes pour s’emparer du qi évacué (justement sheng qi 生氣 émettre le qi). Malgré les nombreux exemples de hantise de la part de renards mâles sur des femmes, qui, généralement, deviennent alors folles, et les nombreux exemples de vieux renards sages qui aident les hommes à pratiquer la Voie, la figure sûrement la plus répandue dans la littérature classique est celle de la belle renarde femme fatale, qui vampirise les hommes pour obtenir l’immortalité ou pour se lier à eux dans une relation de véritable amour et de secours à l’homme aimé3. Ces personnages de renard peuvent être présentés de manière ponctuelle, comme dans les récits les plus anciens, ou de manière étalée, comme dans les romans en langue vulgaire plus récents. Les recherches menées jusqu’à aujourd’hui montrent un intérêt majeur porté sur les récits ponctuels — voir par exemple Rania Huntington et Kang Xiaofei en anglais, avec une attention particulière consacrée au Liaozhai zhiyi 聊齋誌異 de Pu Songling 蒲松齡 (1640- 1715), ou encore Ylva Monschein et Birthe Blauth en allemand, avec

Leiden, Boston: Brill, 2010. Pp. xiv + 431. €130.00/$185.00. This volume marks a new stage in the study of Chinese women’s history and Chinese women’s writing. Ably edited by Grace Fong (who is also the editor of the series, “Women and Gender in China Studies,” in which the book appears) and veteran editor Ellen Widmer, it brings together essays by leading scholars of Chinese women’s writing. The subjects of the essays are not virgin topics for their authors, as almost all have published extensively on closely related themes and bodies of texts. But rather than rehashing existing work (only Fong’s essay has appeared elsewhere), the authors distil from their depth of knowledge of sources and context what are often gems of insight. The most significant contribution of the volume lies in the light these essays shed on Ming and Qing women’s consciousness. This is not a collection focused on male constructions of the feminine or representations of women, dotted with speculation on women’s subjectivity. Through the sources the chapters bring to light, the authors’ sophisticated interpretations of these often highly convention-bound sources, and—one of the outstanding features of the volume—the inclusion in the body of the essays of long passages from the sources in Chinese with English translations, The Inner Quarters and Beyond greatly enhances our understanding of women’s lives, feelings, and both personal and political preoccupations.

East Asian Gothic is an umbrella term which encompasses the cinemas of PRC, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea, 1234567890 acknowledging the difficult histories and conflicts between the nations, as well as film making practices and industries. This is in opposition to critical work which views East Asian gothic and horror films as extensions of Japanese horror, and therefore J-Horror as a meta-genre; for example David Kalat in J-Horror (2007) and Axelle Carolyn in It Lives Again! Horror Films in the New Millennium (2008), or focus almost solely on the relationship between contemporary Western and East Asian Horror cinema through an analysis of the remake. In order to demonstrate the transnational and regional flows that form East Asian gothic cinema, this paper focuses in on one of the oldest and most enduring gothic figures found in literature and mythology across East Asia, the nine-tailed fox: known as the huli jin in China, gumiho in Korea and kitsune in Japan. While much has been written about the vengeful ghost, little attention has been paid to that of the fox-spirit even though ‘she’ is ubiquitous in East Asian popular culture.

These various renderings of “feminism” can be found in texts from the period covered in this study. While often used interchangeably, they carry slightly dif- ferent connotations. 2. In addition to calling for a radical transformation of Confucian social mores and values prejudicial to women, early feminists also demanded concrete recognition of women’s social and political rights. Prominent among these were the eradication of foot binding, equal rights in inheritance, access to edu- cation and the professions, marital freedoms, including the right to choose one’s own partner and to divorce, the right to vote and be elected to public office, and the abolition of the practice of child-brides, concubinage, and prostitution. 3.     Amateur Music Clubs and State Intervention/Wang Ying-fen 95 Amateur Music Clubs and State Intervention: The Case of Nanguan Music in Postwar Taiwan Wang Ying-fen Associate Professor National Taiwan University Graduate Institute of Musicology Abstract: Amateur music clubs had been an integral part of the communal life in traditional Taiwan society. They constituted the main vehicle through which traditional art forms had been transmitted from generation to genera- tion. In post-war Taiwan, however, amateur music clubs experienced serious decline. This was partly due to the Nationalist government’s cultural policy to promote Western and Chinese art forms and downgrade local Taiwanese culture, and partly due to the rapid westernization, modernization, industrial- ization, and urbanization that Taiwan society had undergone. In the 1970s, with the change of the political climate both internationally and domestical- ly, the Nationalist government began to pay attention to local culture and to implement a series of projects to promote traditional arts. Among the art forms promoted, nanguan music stood out as one of the best supported due to its high social status, neutral political position, and academic value as recognized by foreign and domestic scholars. State intervention in nanguan started in 1980 and gradually increased its intensity until it reached its peak level in the second half of the 1990s. It has brought many resources to nan- guan clubs, but it has also contributed to the deterioration of the nanguan community both in its musical quality and its members' integrity as amateur musicians. Based on my personal involvement in nanguan, I aim to document in this paper the state intervention in nanguan in the past two decades and to examine its impact on nanguan.

In the first part of the chapter, existing theories on translation are explored, and issues such as the quest for equivalence and the problem of untranslatability are discussed. The second objective of the chapter is to analyze the translation strategies commonly employed by translators. The analysis in sections 1.8, 1.9 and 1.10 is based on the translation strategies applied in the Chinese translation of Philip Pullman’s The Golden Compass (1995).
