INTRODUCTION
The Buckley and Brooke Company and Clingan and Brooke Company Records, 1750-1937 (HOFU 35503) document the administration and operation of Hopewell Furnace owned by the Daniel Buckley and Thomas and Matthew Brooke families. The records hold financial and legal documents, correspondence, technical and administrative material, ledgers, journals, daybooks and some personal papers. The records are a significant resource for the park and are used by researchers and park staff to interpret the development of the iron-making complex. Intellectual control of the collection provides a framework for its care and preservation while at-the-same- time ensuring continued use and access.
In November 2006, 37 archival document boxes containing the records of the owners’ of Hopewell Furnace were brought to NMSC for processing. After the records were moved to NMSC offices, a survey was conducted. The results of the survey and a review of the park’s Collection Management Plan revealed that additional records, cataloged separately by the park, belonged to the manuscript collection. A second trip was undertaken in January 2007 to pick up the bound volumes of account books, ledgers, journals, daybooks and time books. Once the additional records were surveyed, a processing plan was developed for the entire manuscript collection. One other manuscript collection, the E. and G. Brooke Land Company Records (unprocessed), was found holding records relating to the Buckley and Brooke Company and the Clingan and Buckley Company Records. This collection was also conveyed to the NMSC office in Charlestown. The E. & G. Brooke Land Company, founded by Matthew Brooke’s sons Edward and George, hold a significant amount of land records and deeds relating to Hopewell Furnace and Birdsborough Forge. These records will be processed separately under a different phase of the project.
Between November 2006 and June 2007, NMSC Museum Specialist, Teri DeYoung, processed and cataloged the collection under the guidance of NMSC Archivist and Backlog Cataloging Supervisor, David Vecchioli. During the project the NMSC was administered by Sara Wolf, Director and Giles Parker, Deputy Director. The project was carried out at the Northeast Museum Services Center with fiscal year 2007 backlog cataloging funds.
The materials were processed according to NPS, NMSC and park standards. Collection processing included removing staples and fasteners and rehousing records in acid-free buffered enclosures. Bound volumes that were not oversized were placed spine-down in acid-free folders and then put in archival boxes. Items larger than the standard 81/2” x 11” were removed from their original file locations for preservation purposes. Oversized items were removed from the original folders and cross-referenced to their original location with separation sheets. The collection catalog record in the Collections Management Module of the Automated National Catalog System Plus (ANCS+) was created and a completion report, Completion Report: Backlog Cataloging for Hopewell Furnace National Historical Park, Buckley and Brooke Company and Clingan and Buckley Company Records, 1750-1937 describes the project methodology and outlines curatorial recommendations (including conservation concerns). This Buckley and Brooke Company and Clingan and Buckley Company Records - 2 finding aid was written and includes an outline of the series organization and series descriptions. In July 2007 a draft finding aid was submitted to the park and the collection was returned.
Organization of the Collection
The records were located in the park’s museum bally storage facility in 37 archival boxes. During the 1960s, park Historians’ conflated a dozen separate accessions without regard to provenance. The records were then processed and arranged chronologically. A numerical system was devised using the date of a record whereby the year would appear first followed by the month and then the day. A letter written on November 11, 1830 would be identified as 8301111. Once the records were labeled, they were arranged in chronological order. If multiple records had the same date then an A, B or C would be placed after the numerical identifier. Undated records were organized by subject and given abbreviated subject headings such as OSTIM-1 for Office Store Time Sheets or BGHS-1 for Big House Furnishings. Each record was individually housed in archival folders. The folders were labeled with the numerical identifier and arranged chronologically in boxes. Many of the documents received conservation treatment with a backing of Japanese paper. The incomplete nature of the accession records and limited documentation on the records prevented cross-referencing. Consequently, very few of the records origin can be identified. Most of the records were donated or found on-site. In 1940, Archeologist Chris Motz found more than 200 items in the Office Garret [HOFU-14]. Others, including “a trunkfull,” of records were removed from the site and then given as a “gift” by former CCC foreman Jackson Kemper [HOFU-310].
It was determined during the current fiscal year 2007 project since little or no evidence of original order was apparent, the imposed chronological system would be retained. Within the chronological framework, the records were organized by provenance and arranged into five series. The series are Series I., Hopewell Furnace Records, Series II., Birdsborough Forge Records., Series III., Hampton Forge Records., Series IV., Research Files and Series V., Oversize Material. Within each series the records have been assembled by function (financial, legal, land or personal). The account books, ledgers, journals, day books and time books have been arranged by provenance following the above hierarchy. Within each series the bound volumes are organized by subject and therein chronologically following an order developed by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission where the volumes were on loan between 1976 and 1988.
Researchers may refer to the cataloged card index (HOFU 34111) as a research aid. The card index is loosely organized alphabetically. The arrangement does not guarantee that all the cards within the heading relate specifically to the heading; it is therefore useful to think of the headings as signposts in the flow of alphabetical ordering. The numbering system employed by park Historians is present on most cards and can be a useful tool for cross referencing records.
The finding aid is divided into five sections:

SERIES DESCRIPTIONS
The Buckley and Brooke Company and Clingan and Brooke Company Records, 1750-1937 (bulk dates 1800-1860), are arranged into the following series:
Series I. Hopewell Furnace Records, 1800-1937
This series holds the administrative records for Hopewell Furnace plantation owned by the Buckley and Brooke families. Since original order could not be discerned, the records retained the overall chronological organization developed by the historians at HOFU. Within the chronological framework, the records have been organized into financial records, legal and land records and personal papers. Financial records include account information, bills, orders, receipts and statement. Legal records consist of correspondence, administrative material such as agreements and documentation relating to the Mathias Kahler case, the Bishop-Smith case and the Penn Claim. Surveys, maps, draughts and warrants make up the Land records. A small number of personal papers are also located here. Personal papers hold family memorabilia and correspondence between Matthew Brooke’s children, Ann, Sara, Edward, George and Elizabeth. The bound volumes of account books, journals, ledgers, daybooks, time books and cash books have retained the order developed by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission where the records were on loan between 1977 and 1988.
Series II. Birdsborough Forge Records,
This series includes agreements, correspondence and account records for Birdsborough Forge and Grist Mill. This series holds records between 1798 through 1854. The records have been arranged following the hierarchy developed for the Hopewell Furnace Records.
Series III. Hampton Forge Records,
This series holds a small number of correspondence and a Time Account Book for the Forge which was owned by Buckley and Brooke. The records date between 1802 and 1811. The records have been arranged following the hierarchy developed for the Hopewell Furnace Records.
Series IV. Research Files
This series contains photocopies and research notes relating to the Buckley and Brooke families and Hopewell Furnace. The records were created by park historian Earl Heydinger and have been arranged chronologically.
Series V. Oversize Materials
These items are grouped together because of their common size. All are intellectually associated Buckley and Brooke Company and Clingan and Brooke Company Records- 12 Collection Description with the legal-size materials but are too large to be stored in standard legal-size folders and boxes. Oversize materials are stored in 21 flat boxes and 2 map folders.

Further study of the records is recommended for a comprehensive analysis. Joseph E. Walker’s Hopewell Furnace: A Social and Economic History is a good source for understanding the background and history of Hopewell Furnace and the Buckley and Brooke association.
On August 21, 1800 the partnership of Daniel Buckley and his brothers-in-law Thomas and Matthew Brooke purchased the Hopewell Furnace complex. Operation of the furnace and estate remained within the two families until 1935. Throughout that period, the partnership and estate underwent considerable reconfigurations and witnessed numerous failures and successes. At the time of purchase, the estate held 5,360 acres plus the iron-making complex.3 “The operation produced pig iron and cast iron products such as stove plates and kettles, employing, for most of its history, the “cold blast” method of iron production and using charcoal for fuel.4 Daniel Buckley and Thomas Brooke and Matthew Brooke were individually involved in a number of ironworks in eastern Pennsylvania prior to their purchase of Hopewell Furnace in 1800. “Matthew Brooke… helped manage Hopewell Furnace for a short time before the purchase…his brother Thomas was involved in ironworks in Montgomery County, while Daniel Buckley was a successful owner of furnaces and forges in Lancaster County.”5 Daniel Buckley and Matthew Brooke partnered as early as 1798 with the lease of Birdsborough Forge and Grist Mill. Birdsborough Forge belonged to the estate of John Lewis Barde, Matthew Brooke’s father- in-law. Daniel Buckley and Matthew Brooke held the lease for the forge and grist mill until 1801 when Matthew Brooke purchased the estate for $5,000.6 In 1800, Thomas Brooke joined the partnership with the purchase of Hopewell Furnace. As early as 1804, the firm was known as Buckley and Brooke. Each partner held a 1/3 share. Hopewell sold most of its “pig iron to forges owned by partners in the furnace company. Mark Bird, James Wilson and Buckley and Brooke used it at Birdsboro Forge.”7 As early as 1801, land title disputes and lawsuits plagued the partnership.8 The Mathias Kahler case, the Bishop-Smith Case and the Penn Claim dragged on for years and cost the firm thousands of dollars and were contributing factors in the furnace being out of blast between 1808 and 1816.9 During the shut-down, Clement Brooke, Thomas Brooke’s son kept the stamp mill operating and upon re-blast in 1816 became Hopewell’s Ironmaster. The firm was reorganized as Daniel Buckley and Company in that same year. In 1821 Matthew Brooke died. His children (Ann, Sara, Edward, George and Elizabeth)

Corporate History Buckley and Brooke Company and Clingan and Buckley Company Records- 17 petitioned the court in 1824 for their 1/3 share of the lands from the company.10 They received the Birdsborough complex. Beginning in 1822, the grist mill and saw mill were leased by Samuel Barde and Mathew M. Brooke to Henry Robeson.11 Various parties rented the mills until Matthew Brooke’s sons, Edward and George took over operation of the Birdsboro and Hampton properties upon their majorities in 1837.12 Birdsborough and Hopewell lands were legally separated in 1847.13 Upon Daniel Buckley’s death in 1827, the company was renamed Buckley and Brooke.14 At that time, Daniel Buckley son’s Clement, George Washington and Matthew Brooke Buckley became heirs to half the company.15 On June 14, 1830 Matthew Brooke Buckley purchased Clement’s and George’s shares in Hopewell.16 Later that year, Thomas Brooke died leaving his half share of Hopewell to his children Charles and Clement Brooke.17 In 1831 the firm was reorganized under the name Clement Brooke and Company. Each of the three partners held equal shares after Matthew Brooke Buckley sold 1/3 of his share to the Brooke brothers.18 Clement Brooke guided the furnace through its most prosperous years overseeing operations between 1816 and 1848.19 “Under the shrewd management of Clement Brooke, Hopewell Furnace found new markets for its products, took advantage of the improvements in transportation and profited from the demands for new products of iron.”20 In 1849, Dr. Charles Clingan, Clement Brooke’s son-in-law, took over management of the furnace. In 1852 the company was reorganized again when a rift developed between Clement Brooke and Charles Brooke possibly due to the former advocating the construction of an anthracite furnace at Hopewell.21 Charles Brooke was bought out of the partnership and a new anthracite furnace was built in 1853. In that year, Matthew Brooke Buckley died and bequeathed his half share to his son Edward S. Buckley and wife Mary Swift.22 Although retired, Clement Brooke remained partner until his death in 1861. Upon his death his half share was transferred to his daughter Maria T. Clingan. At that time, the firm name was changed to the Clingan and Buckley Company though between 1855 and 1861 correspondences were directed to Brooke and Buckley and Company or Brooke Buckley and Company reflecting the dynamic nature of the

Throughout the Civil War years the furnace was profitable but by the 1870s business was sporadic. The business panic of 1873 caused the furnace to be out of blast in 1874 and again late in the decade.23 The furnace was permanently shut down after a final blast on June 15, 1883.24 In 1894, Maria T. Clingan traded property in Philadelphia for Edward S. Buckley’s share in Hopewell Furnace.25 One year later she transferred his half share to her children Charles B. Clingan, Alan Hunter Clingan and A. Louise Clingan Brooke. When Maria Clingan died on May 17, 1904, Hopewell Furnace was bequeathed to her surviving children. After the death of Alan Hunter Clingan in 1905, A. Louise Clingan Brooke became the sole proprietor when she received her brother’s share and purchased Charles Clingan’s share from his children. The remaining years at the furnace were spent selling off ore rights and timber. In 1906, A. Louise Clingan Brooke and husband Edward Brooke, Matthew Brooke’s grandson, sold ore rights to 3,000 acres of which 2,829 acres were Hopewell land.26 After more than 150 years as an active furnace, the Hopewell compound totaling more than four thousand acres was sold to the federal government in 1935 for the development of the French Creek Recreational Demonstration Project. On August 3, 1938, the furnace complex, village site and 213 acres were designated Hopewell Village National Historic Site.
