Peculiarities of Clarinet Concertos Form-Building in the Second Half of the 20th Century and the Beginning of the 21st Century Marina Chernaya and Yu Zhao* Abstract: The article deals with clarinet concertos composed in the 20th– 21st centuries. Many different works have been created, either in one or few parts; the longest concert that is mentioned has seven parts (by K. Meyer, 2000). Most of the concertos have 3 parts and the fast-slowly-fast kind of structure connected with the Italian overture; sometimes, the scheme has variants. Our question is: How does the concerto genre function during this period? To answer, we had to search many musical compositions. Sometimes the clarinet is accompanied by orchestra, other times it is surrounded by an ensemble of instruments. More than 100 concertos were found and analyzed. Examples of such concertos were written by C. Nielsen, P. Boulez, J. Adams, C. Debussy, M. Arnold, A. Copland, P. Hindemith, I. Stravinsky, S. Vassilenko, and the attention in the article is focused on them. A special complete analysis is made as regards “Domaines” for clarinet and 21 instruments divided in 6 groups, by Pierre Boulez that had a great role for the concert routine, based on the “aleatoric” principle. The conclusions underline the significant development of the clarinet concerto genre in the 20th -21st centuries, the high diversity of the compositions’ structures, the considerable expressiveness and technicality together with the soloist’s part in the expressive concertizing (as a rule). Further studies suggest the analysis of stylistic and structural peculiarities of the found compositions that are apparently to win their popularity with performers and listeners.

  • "If There Were More Cynthia Phelpses Around, There Might Be More Viola Recitals…She Is a Master of Her Instrument -- Rema
"If there were more Cynthia Phelpses around, there might be more viola recitals…she is a master of her instrument -- remarkable technique and warm, full sound." – THE WALL STREET JOURNAL "Not only does CYNTHIA PHELPS produce one of the richest, deepest viola timbres in the world, she is a superb musician" (Seattle Post-Intelligencer). Principal Violist of the New York Philharmonic, Ms. Phelps has distinguished herself both here and abroad as one of the leading instrumentalists of our time. The recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the Pro Musicis International Award and first prize at both the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition and the Washington International String Competition, she has captivated audiences with her compelling solo and chamber music performances. She is "a performer of top rank...the sounds she drew were not only completely unproblematical --technically faultless, generously nuanced-- but sensuously breathtaking" (The Boston Globe). Ms. Phelps performs throughout the world as soloist with orchestras, including the Minnesota Orchestra, Shanghai, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Eastern Music Festival and Vermont Symphonies, Orquesta Sinfonica de Bilbao, and Rochester and Hong Kong Philharmonic among others. World-wide, her electrifying solo appearances with the New York Philharmonic garner raves; they have included Berlioz's Harold in Italy, the Bartok Viola Concerto, Strauss's Don Quixote, the Benjamin Lees Concerto for String Quartet, the premiere of a concerto written for her by Sofia Gubaidulina and most recently, the premiere of a new concerto by the young composer Julia Adolphe written for her. She has appeared as soloist with the orchestra across the globe, including Vienna’s Musikverein, London’s Royal Festival Hall, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam among others.

  • Northern Ireland Tour March 21 – 26
WILLIAM WALTON An extravaganza in One Act based on the play by Anton Chekhov Northern Ireland Tour March 21 – 26 “There’s a real buzz and sense of purpose about what this company is doing” ~ The Guardian Welcome Welcome to this evening’s performance of The Bear. Tonight’s programme showcases not only a rarely performed jewel of an opera, but also brings to Northern Ireland three wonderful singers who are making a real name for themselves on the world stage. Anna Burford and Andrew Rupp are performing with NI Opera for the first time following recent engagements at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and English National Opera. Those of you who saw our production of Tosca back in 2011 will remember John Molloy who sang the roles of Angelotti and Sciarrone then, and sings the role of Luka tonight. We are also delighted that some of Northern Ireland’s finest choirs are appearing in the first part of tonight’s programme, singing a selection of George Shearing’s beautiful Songs and Sonnets from Shakespeare. The combination of Northern Irish talent, internationally-renowned singers and innovative programming has been highly evident throughout our 2012/13 season, which draws to a close with this tour. From commissioning exciting new short operas from leading Irish composers and playwrights, to performing a children’s opera in Belfast Zoo and at the Beijing Music Festival, to bringing a home grown production of a Wagner opera to the Belfast stage for the first time ever, this has certainly been a year to remember. 2012/13 has also seen NI Opera make its debuts at the prestigious Buxton Festival and in the Irish Republic, whilst our programmes for nurturing the best young Irish talent – particularly our Young Artists’ Programme and our annual Festival of Voice in Glenarm – continue to prosper.

Fu Jen Catholic University, 2001 M.M. University of Cincinnati, 2003 ABSTRACT Franz Anton Hoffmeister’s Viola Concerto in D Major (written prior to 1799) has become among the standard repertoire of viola concertos, due to the rise of viola virtuosos since the beginning of the twentieth century and the rarity of virtuosic viola concertos with stylistic forms from the Classical period. This piece has been included in several major orchestra auditions and competitions. While violists often lack hands-on experiences of the Classical repertoire, this document is to provide violists ways to perform this piece and pieces from the same period. Hoffmeister’s Viola Concerto in D Major has been published by G. Henle Verlag, Kunzelmann, Peters, Kalmus, International Music Company (New York), H.

  • Analysis of My Kurtág Cycle
Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf Analysis of my Kurtág Cycle I. Introduction In accordance with the three temporal modes, one can divide artists into three types. The first lives in remembrance of what has been and what has passed, usually mourning what has been lost; the second lives in expectation of a pos- sible, “better” future, seeking to anticipate or help prepare for it through his work; the third lives in the here and now and cannot really understand the other two. I must admit that I do not belong to any one type alone; I am in two, per- haps even three minds as an artist. In contrast to the title of a late work—La lontananza nostalgica utopica futura—by Luigi Nono, however, whom I greatly revere, I abandoned the endeavor to reach a “synthesis” of these three atti- tudes in my work some time ago. Up until Angel Novus, the music theater work I composed at the Dantesque midpoint in my life, i.e., in my mid-30s, I had felt it necessary to do justice to all facets of my artistic existence—albeit in highly individualized ways—in every composition. I was interested in a consistent style referred to—hastily, and partly provoked by my own statements—as “complex- ist,” though I had always viewed my complexist style as one element of what, following on from Beethoven, whom I consider the greatest composer of all, could be termed multi-perspectivity: the ability to compose a Fifth Symphony and a Sixth Symphony in tandem. After Angelus Novus, I reached a fork in my path.
