UNITED STATES MILITARY AIRCRAFT by Jos Heyman Navy H Last update: 1 February 2015 H = Hall (1928-1940) FH Hall Specifications: span: 32', 9.75 m length: 22'6", 6.86 m engines: 1 Pratt & Whitney R-1340-B max. speed: 153 mph, 246 km/h (Source: K.O. Eckland, via Aerofiles.com) The XFH-1 was a single seat fighter with a watertight fuselage and of aluminium construction. A single aircraft was ordered with serial A-8009 and flew for the first time in June 1929. PH Hall Specifications: span: 72'10", 22.20 m length: 51'10", 15.80 m engines: 2 Wright GR-1750 max. speed: 124 mph, 200 km/h (Source: Ron Dupas, via 1000aircraftphotos.com photo #3219) The PH flying boat was based on the PN-11 design but was built of aluminium. A single XPH-1 was ordered on 27 December 1927 with serial A-8004. The first flight was in December 1929. This was followed by an order of 9 PH-1s on 10 June 1930 with serials A-8687/8695. These aircraft were fitted with Wright R-1820-86 engines and the first flight was on 19 October 1931. The PH-2 version was ordered by the USCG in June 1936 with serials V164/170. These aircraft had a length of 51', 15.54 m and were fitted with R-1820-F51 engines. The final version, identical to the PH-2, was the PH-3 of which 7 were procured by the USCG with serials V177/183. The PH-3 incorporated several design improvements including a new cockpit fairing. -

The Research Airplane Program was a joint research effort by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA--formerly the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics or NACA) and the military services. It was con- ceived near the end of World War II to perform flight studies with a series of specially-constructed research aircraft in the then-unexplored transonic to low-supersonic characteristics of full-scale aircraft in flight. Although supersonic flight was first achieved in 1947, further research in the program resulted in notable increases in knowledge about the dynamics of piloted flight in winged aircraft at speeds up to and in excess of 4,500 miles per hour and at altitudes up to and greater than 350,000 feet. 1 Yeager was also the pilot when the X-1 reached its maxi- Two general categories of aircraft were obtained for the mum speed, 957 mph. F Fighter Aircraft, Three P-11 S Were Ordered on 3 October 1928 with Serials 29-367/368 and 29-374
UNITED STATES MILITARY AIRCRAFT by Jos Heyman Air Force F = Fighter (1924 - 1962) The F series was introduced on 11 June 1948 and continued the P series. For F = Photoreconnaissance, refer R Last update: 1 January 2016 F-1 Curtiss 34 Hawk Specifications: span: 31'7", 9.63 m length: 22'10", 6.96 m engines: 1 Curtiss V-1150-1 max. speed: 163 mph, 262 km/h (Source: Jack McKillop, via 1000aircraftphotos.com photo #7528) The Curtiss Hawk was a production version of the XPW-8B design. 15 were ordered as P-1 on 7 March 1925. The serials were 25-410/419. In addition P-2s with serials 25-421/423 were converted as P-1. Eventually the P-1s remaining in service were redesignated as ZP-1. The P-1A version had a length of 22'11", 6.99 m and 25 were ordered on 9 September 1925 with serials 26-276/300. In addition three P-2s with serials 25-421/422 and 25-424 were converted to this standard. One of these aircraft, 26-280, was used for tests as XP-1A . The P-1B version had a V-1150-3 engine and 25 were ordered on 17 August 1926 with serials 27-063/087. Two of these were used for development testing as XP-1B . The serials were 27-071 and 27-073. The P-1C had a length of 23'3", 7.09 m and had a V-1150-5 engine. On 3 October 1928 33 were ordered with serials 29-227/259. -

Vor 70 Jahren - Erstflug mit einem Düsentriebwerk Die Entwicklung des Strahlantriebs Der Strahlantrieb basiert auf dem physikalischen Prinzip: Aktion = Reaktion Durch das Abstoßen einer Masse wird der abstoßende Körper in die Gegenrich- tung bewegt. Wirft z.B. ein Astronaut in einem Raumschiff einen Gegenstand von sich weg, wird er in die entgegengesetzte Richtung entschweben, falls er sich nicht festhält. Eine Rakete erzeugt einen kontinuierlichen Massenstrom, den Schubstrahl, der sie vorantreibt. Mit einem aufgeblasenen Luftballon kann man im Wohnzimmer eine Niedrigenergierakete steigen lassen. In der Natur ist der Tintenfisch ein bekanntes Beispiel für den Strahlantrieb. Er stößt Wasser mit hoher Geschwindigkeit nach hinten aus, um sich selbst nach vorne zu bewegen. In Europa erdachte Heron von Alexandria im 1. Jhd n. Chr. die Aeolipile. Aus einem drehbaren Dampfkessel trat durch Düsen Wasserdampf aus, wodurch er in Rotation versetzt wurde. In China sind Starts von Raketen mit Schwarzpul- ver 1232 n. Chr. belegt. Die erste Rakete mit flüssigen Treibstoffen wurde am 16. März 1926 von Robert H. Goddard in den USA gestartet. Raketen führen den benötigten Brennstoff und Sauerstoff mit sich, in der At- mosphäre gibt es aber ausreichend Sauerstoff für die Verbrennung. Bei einem Turbinenluftstrahltriebwerk (TL-TW) wird daher Luft angesaugt, verdichtet, in der Brennkammer mit Kraftstoff vermischt und verbrannt. Die sich ausdehnen- den Abgase werden über eine Turbine geleitet und expandieren dann als Schub- strahl. Die Turbine entzieht dem Abgas die Energie für den Verdichter, mit dem sie über eine Welle verbunden ist. Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts waren alle Komponenten für ein TL-TW be- kannt: Verdichter, Brennkammer, Turbine und Schubdüse. -

UNITED STATES MILITARY AIRCRAFT by Jos Heyman Navy J Last update: 1 January 2016 J = Berliner Joyce (1929-1935) FJ Berliner Joyce Specifications: span: 28'6", 8.69 m length: 20'7", 6.27 m engines: 1 Pratt & Whitney R-1340-C max. speed: 172 mph, 227 km/h (Source: Dan Shumaker, via 1000aircraftphotos.com photo #9529) A fighter aircraft based on the BuAer design 96, one aircraft was ordered on 16 May 1929 as XFJ-1 with serial A-8288. It flew for the first time in May 1930 and was, after a crash in November 1930 rebuilt as XFJ-2, with a R-1340-92 engine. It flew again on 22 May 1931. The FJ designation was later used again for the North American design. F2J Berliner Joyce Specifications: span: 36', 10.97 m length: 28'10", 8.79 m engines: 1 Wright R-1510-92 max. speed: 196 mph, 315 km/h (Source: Bill Pippin, via 1000aircraftphotos.com photo #10989) Based on the USAAC’s P-16 design, a single aircraft was ordered as XF2J-1 and with serial A-8973, on 30 June 1931 but did not fly until 1933. Originally it was to have a Pratt & Whitney R-1690 engine. The design was evaluated in competition with the Grumman XFF-1. F3J Berliner Joyce Specifications: span: 29', 8.84 m length: 22'11", 6.99 m engines: 1 Wright R-1510-26 max. speed: 209 mph, 336 km/h (Source: David Gauthier, via 1000aircraft photos #10728) Designed by the Bu Aer as Design 120, a single XF3J-1 with serial 9224 was ordered on 30 June 1932 to evaluate against the Grumman XF2F-1. -
